Different alleles of the prion protein gene (PRNP) of human and sheep are known to be associated with varying susceptibilities to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. However, no polymorphisms in the bovine PRNP gene with an effect on susceptibility to prion diseases have been identified to date. In this study we investigated such polymorphisms in German cattle; 48 healthy animals from six different German cattle breeds and 43 cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) were analyzed.

Background & Aims: Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (CSID) is an autosomal recessive human disorder characterized by reduced activities of the brush border enzyme sucrase-isomaltase (SI). Here, we elucidate the pathogenesis of a new variant of CSID at the cellular and molecular level.

The sorting of apical proteins comprises an initial recognition step in the trans Golgi network and a final partitioning of the apical pool of proteins into at least two different types of vesicular carriers. One criteria of these carriers is the association or non-association of the protein content with lipid rafts. Response to osmotic shock is an important aspect of mammalian sperm physiology. In this study we recorded volume changes of dog spermatozoa at 39, 33, and 25 degrees C under isotonic conditions and following hypotonic shock. This paper describes a new approach for spatial relative risk mapping as a tool for geographical risk assessment. The spatial epidemiological analysis is based on geographically referenced data about pseudorabies (Aujeszky's disease) virus infections at farm level in a region of high animal density in Germany at the beginning of the national eradication project. On the basis of serological findings 186 farms were classified as positive out of a total of 482 investigated farms listed in veterinary administrative registers.

The comparison of the contents of nutrients determined in commercial hand rearing diets with the nutrient requirements of growing budgerigars and lovebirds estimated by the factorial method revealed satisfactory protein, lysine and arginine concentrations. Regarding sulphur amino acids, a number of products showed marginal methionine and cystine contents. Mineral contents generally met all requirements and were even excessive in some cases.

In a study with sows at various stages of the reproductive cycle, the effects of parturition, feed quantity and composition (content and type of crude fibre), exercise and access to water on dry matter content, and consistency of faeces were estimated. Parturition caused an increase in the dry matter content and reduced the defaecation frequency. The restriction of feed amounts in the last days of gestation and the change to lactation feed with reduced crude fibre content (6-3% in feed) intensified the physiologically occurring increase of the dry matter content.

To study the prevalence of the polymorphism in position 200 of the beta-tubulin gene in the mechanism of benzimidazole (BZ) resistance in cyathostomes of horses, an allele-specific PCR was used to detect the genotype of individuals of BZ-susceptible and BZ-resistant populations. The molecular analysis of 100 adults recovered from an anthelmintic-naïve horse revealed 80% homozygous TTC/TTC individuals, 17% heterozygous TTC/TAC and 3% homozygous TAC/TAC. A naturally infected horse was treated with increasing fenbendazole (FBZ) dosages to select a BZ-resistant population of cyathostomes.
