The distribution of four important connexins (Cx 26, 30, 31, 43) in the skin of a neonatal lamb with (erythro)keratodermia (EKV) was demonstrated using immunohistochemistry, including a very sensitive visualization system. The reaction staining for Cx 26, 30 and 31 was negative to weak in all skin structures, and only Cx 43 displayed weak to moderate positive reactions, although not uniformly distributed throughout the important systems (e.g.

Carbohydrates on epithelial cell surfaces play an important role as attachment sites for different microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and protozoa. To obtain more information about the distribution of carbohydrates on the luminal surface along the intestine, lectin histochemical studies on different gut segments of chicks of different age groups were carried out using a panel of 13 lectins with specificities for Man, Glc, Gal, GalNAc, GlcNAc or GlcNAc oligosaccharides and Sia. Furthermore, we tried to find out whether previously reported specificities of certain lectins for M cells (membranous or multifold cells) in the bursa of Fabricius (BF) can be observed also on M cells of the intestine.

During the formation of the brain, neuronal cell migration and neurite extension are controlled by extracellular guidance cues. Here, I discuss experiments showing that the messenger nitric oxide (NO) is an additional regulator of cell motility. NO is a membrane permeant molecule, which activates soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) and leads to the formation of cyclic GMP (cGMP) in target cells.

The number of accessory sperm found in the zona pellucida of porcine embryos was correlated to their individual quality and to the embryo quality range found within a single sow. Our goal was to determine whether accessory sperm counts provide semen evaluation with additional, useful information. Accessory sperm count was highest when only normal embryos were found in a given sow and diminished if oocytes or degenerated embryos were present (P<0.

Objectives: To assess the use of Holter monitoring for evaluating the incidence of post-anaesthetic cardiac arrhythmias and associated anaesthetic risk for two different anaesthetic protocols.
Methods: Patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery were randomly divided into two groups with different anaesthetic regimens (group A, isoflurane n = 30; group B, propofol n = 30). Two 24-hour Holter recordings were performed for each patient: the first directly following anaesthesia and the second, as a comparison, on the fifth postoperative day.

Spermatozoa of many species initially respond to hypotonicity as perfect osmometers. Thereafter they undergo a regulatory process resulting in a decrease in cell volume, similar to that reported for somatic cells. Regulatory volume increase (RVI), a complementary process which is assumed to occur following initial shrinkage of sperm volume after exposure to a hypertonic medium, has not yet been described in detail for spermatozoa.

Deafness is often diagnosed in different dog breeds and has been identified as a significant problem for breeders, owners and clinicians. The aetiology can be inherited or acquired, and a distinction must be made between sensorineural and conductive forms of deafness. This paper provides a brief overview of the varieties of findings in different dog breeds and in one breed in particular including prevalence, phenotypic and gender associations, histology, modes of inheritance and the number of contributing genes in congenital sensorineural deafness.

The mammalian oocyte is encased by a transparent extracellular matrix, the zona pellucida (ZP), which consists of three glycoproteins, ZPA, ZPB, and ZPC. The glycan structures of the porcine ZP and the complete N-glycosylation pattern of the ZPB/ZPC oligomer has been recently described. Here we report the N-glycan pattern and N-glycosylation sites of the porcine ZP glycoprotein ZPA of an immature oocyte population as determined by a mass spectrometric approach.

Due to the similarity of plasma membrane changes induced by capacitation and cryopreservation, the parameters describing sperm response to capacitating conditions can be used for evaluating the cryopreservation response in many animal systems. In dog sperm, the response of the total sperm population to ionophore treatment has been shown to be an indication of the freezability of semen samples. Another sperm functional characteristic decisive for cryopreservability is cell volume regulation, due to the generation of essential osmotic gradients across the plasma membrane during the freeze-thaw cycles.

Phospholipid-binding proteins in the male genital tract are characterized by differing numbers Fn-2 modules (B-domain) carrying N-terminal extensions (A-domain) of variable length. In the stallion, three different proteins were identified, SP-1, SP-2, and EQ-12. SP-1 and SP-2 of the AA'BB'- and ABB'-type, respectively, are major proteins of the seminal plasma.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different corn processing techniques on the glycaemic and insulinaemic responses in horses. It was hypothesized that the changes in pre-caecal starch digestibility caused by various types of corn processing would alter the post-prandial glycaemic and/or insulinaemic response. Six horses were fed in random order: untreated, finely ground, steamed, micronized, steam-flaked and popped corn.

The diagnosis of tapeworm infections in horses relies on copro-diagnostic methods, which are time-consuming and of limited sensitivity for determination of the exact prevalence. The development of serological tests has slightly improved the detection of tapeworm infections, but more sensitive methods are still required. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approach may constitute a valuable tool to improve tapeworm diagnosis.

With respect to the question of whether the 18O/16O-ratio of meat water could be used for meat origin analysis, factors influencing its delta18O-value have been examined. The 18O/16O-ratio of meat water differs geographically, similar to known differences in precipitation and ground water. In Great Britain higher enrichments in 18O were found in southern samples and in Germany in northern samples.

In Germany treatment of swine dysentery is hampered by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae strains showing elevated MIC values to the few antibiotics licensed. Therefore, susceptibility testing of clinical isolates is an important service to the swine practitioner. This study compares the established agar dilution procedure for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of this fastidious anaerobe to the broth microdilution test newly developed [Anim.

Interstitial lung disease with chronic fibrosis is a frequent cause of reduced performance in horses. The aim of this study was to establish a model of acute alveolar damage and interstitial lung disease in horses that could be used to monitor the histopathological lesions and changes in expression levels of genes relevant to pulmonary fibrosis. Six adult horses were given a single intravenous injection (6 mg per kg body weight) of perilla mint ketone (PMK).
