Animals: Seventy-eight hospitalized dogs with brain tumors and 12 control dogs without brain tumors.

To improve the electrode-nerve interface of cochlear implants (CI), the role of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P(4HB)) as potential coating matrices for CI was assessed both in vitro and in vivo in terms of degradation behavior and effects on spiral ganglion neurons, the main target of the electrical stimulation with a CI. Growth rates of fibroblasts on the polymers were investigated and a direct-contact test with freshly isolated spiral ganglion cells (SGC) was performed. In addition, the effects of the polymer degradation inside the inner ear were evaluated in vivo.

Quercetin has been shown to be a potent antioxidant, acts hepatoprotectively, and affects glucose and lipid metabolism in monogastrics. If this is also true in ruminants, quercetin could be beneficial in periparturient high-yielding dairy cows by ameliorating the negative effects of free radical formation and reducing the severity of liver lipidosis and ketosis. In a first attempt to evaluate effects of a long-term quercetin treatment, we intraduodenally administered twice daily 18 mg of quercetin (Q)/kg of body weight to 5 late-lactation (215d in milk) dairy cows over a period of 28 d.

The investigation aimed at examining if the composition of grassland silage affects the microbial nitrogen assimilation in the rumen of sheep. The silages were made of vegetative summer re-growths consisting of 48% grasses, 28% legumes and 24% other forbs (GCF) or of pure grass (G). Silage GCF contained more intermediately degradable non-structural and less slowly degradable carbohydrates, more crude protein (CP), a narrower ratio between slow and very slow degradable nitrogen (N), and exhibited higher in situ degradability of organic matter and CP than Silage G.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between uterine perfusion and estrogen, progesterone and the uterine nitric oxide synthase (NOS) system in five trotter mares during the estrous cycle. Color Doppler sonography for measurement of uterine blood flow and collection of blood for determination of plasma estrogen and progesterone concentrations were performed on days 0 (= ovulation), 1, 5, 11 and 15 and daily during estrus (days -1 to -4) of one estrous cycle; endometrial biopsy collection for mRNA expression analysis of NOS and estrogen receptors was performed on days 0, 1, 5, 11, 15 and -3. Blood flow in each uterine artery was assessed by calculating the mean time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMV) and the pulsatility index (PI).

Secretion of saliva as well as absorptive and secretory processes across forestomach epithelia ensures an optimal environment for microbial digestion in the forestomachs. Daily salivary secretion of sodium (Na+) exceeds the amount found in plasma by a factor of 2 to 3, while the secretion of bicarbonate (HCO3-) is 6 to 8 times higher than the amount of HCO3- in the total extracellular space. This implies a need for efficient absorptive mechanisms across forestomach epithelia to allow for an early recycling.

Canine steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) is a systemic inflammatory disease with a predominant manifestation within the cervical meninges, increased immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and a shift of the B:T cell ratio towards a higher percentage of B cells. A Th2-dominated immune response associated with SRMA was therefore hypothesised. Pellets of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) and CSF white blood cells (CSF WBCs) from dogs in the acute phase of SRMA (n=16) and under glucocorticoid treatment for SRMA (n=16) were investigated for interleukin (IL)-2, interferon (IFN)-γ, IL-4, IL-5 and IL-10 mRNA expression by means of reverse-transcriptase real-time polymerase chain reaction.

The goal of this study was to determine the effects of the length of the preovulatory phase on genital blood flow and mRNA expression of endometrial hormone receptors in cattle (Bos Taurus). Ovulation was synchronized in 50 Holstein-Friesian cows using a modified Ovsynch (ovulation synchronization) protocol, in which the second gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) administration was given 40h (G40, n=17) or 60h (G60, n=16) after the prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) administration. The third group (S, n=17) did not receive a second GnRH administration.

Canine Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis (SRMA) is a suitable animal model for studies on the development of neutrophilic pleocytosis in aseptic meningitis. Samples of dogs in the acute phase of SRMA (n=16) were examined for gene expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1 and -2. Results were compared to those of dogs under glucocorticosteroid treatment for SRMA (n=16) and dogs with other inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) (n=19).

Regulatory processes in phosphorus (P) homeostasis in small ruminants are quite different compared to monogastric animals. Adaptive responses of modulating hormones [parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitriol] to feeding variable amounts of P are lacking.
