Fracture-luxations of the seventh lumbar vertebrae in two large dogs were stabilised with bone screws and methylmethacrylate. Screws inserted bilaterally into the bodies of the lumbar vertebrae and ilial wings were left protruding by about 2 cm, and embedded in methylmethacrylate bone cement. Implant failure occurred in one dog six days after surgery, necessitating a revision of the fixation.

The existence of coronary endoarterial cushions (CEC) in the human heart as nonpathological, functional entities has been debated, and CEC have been sparsely reported in animals. Arterial cushions are localized thickenings that protrude into the lumen of specific arteries. We have identified CEC in the rhesus monkey, dog, sheep, goat, pig, rabbit and rat, and in the human heart.

Serum samples from 58 mountain lions (Felis concolor) in California (USA) were collected between April 1987 and February 1990. Nineteen serum samples were used for serum biochemistry determinations; the ranges were similar to reference values in domestic cats, captive exotic felidae and free-ranging mountain lions. A serological survey was conducted to determine whether antibodies were present against selected infectious agents.

In growing mammals there is a positive linear relationship between the mean hypertrophic chondrocyte volume and the rate of bone elongation. This suggests that the control of chondrocytic volume in the growth plate, is a major determinant in controlling bone elongation in mammals. In the present study the existence of such a relationship was tested for in birds.

To determine whether intrauterine transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi could exist in dogs, 10 female Beagles were inoculated intradermally with approximately 1,000 B burgdorferi on day 1 of proestrus; inoculation was repeated every 2 weeks during the gestation period. Ten female control Beagles were similarly inoculated with phosphate-buffered saline solution. Prior to the start of the study, all females and 3 males used for breeding were seronegative for B burgdorferi on the basis of results of the indirect fluorescent antibody test and immunoblot (western analysis.

Experimentally induced infection of cats with Borrelia burgdorferi.

To determine whether cats could be infected experimentally with Borrelia burgdorferi, 15 cats were inoculated with approximately 1,000 B burgdorferi. Seven cats were inoculated by the IV route, 2 by the oral route, 2 by the ocular route, and 4 by the oral-ocular route. Three clinical cases are presented to illustrate some of the problems that may complicate the treatment of wounds in horses. The three examples are a lower limb laceration, a chronic draining chest wound, and complications associated with a fiberglass cast. The use of ancillary diagnostic aids such as arthrocentesis, diagnostic nerve blocks, radiographs, and ultrasonography are indicated to assess change to deeper structures.

Applications of skin grafting in large animals.

Results of a prospective serologic and virologic study of ruminant livestock in Central America and the Caribbean islands revealed bluetongue virus (BTV) to be enzootic in the 9 countries participating in the study. Bluetongue virus serotypes 1, 3, 6, and 12 were isolated from sentinel animals. To the authors' knowledge, these are the first isolations of BTV from the region studied and the first isolations of these serotypes in the Western Hemisphere.

A surgical approach to the ramus of the mandible was developed. Subperiosteal elevation of the masseter muscle from the ramus allowed reduction and plate fixation of ramus fractures in a bull and a horse. Results of follow-up examinations, 2 years after surgery, showed excellent functional and cosmetic results.

A mucosal lesion was created in the center of each test sinus of 6 mature, healthy, nonlactating Holstein cows by resecting a circumferential band of mucosa. Each lesion was then treated by implantation of strip grafts of autogenous oral mucosa, temporary silastic tube implant, or a combination of strip grafts and temporary silastic tube implant. All teats were evaluated for patency 6 weeks after treatment, and tube implants were removed through a second thelotomy incision.
