Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the financial impact of tuberculosis (TB) combined with diabetes (TB-DM) on patients and their households in the Philippines, a country with high TB rates and diabetes prevalence.
  • Data was collected over multiple points during treatment, looking at costs, income, and coping strategies among affected households in Negros Occidental and Cebu.
  • Results showed that while TB-DM patients required more frequent medical visits, both TB-DM and TB-only patients faced similar rates of catastrophic costs, indicating that having diabetes does not significantly increase the financial burden from TB.*

The spectrum of diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep A) ranges from superficial to serious life-threatening invasive infections. We conducted a scoping review of published articles between 1980 and 2021 to synthesize evidence of state transitions across the Strep A disease spectrum. We identified 175 articles reporting 262 distinct observations of Strep A disease state transitions.

Recent developments in linkage procedures and exposure modelling offer great prospects for cohort analyses on the health risks of environmental factors. However, assigning individual-level exposures to large population-based cohorts poses methodological and practical problems. In this contribution, we illustrate a linkage framework to reconstruct environmental exposures for individual-level epidemiological analyses, discussing methodological and practical issues such as residential mobility and privacy concerns.

  • A scoping review was conducted to assess neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Japan, highlighting a lack of existing literature on the subject in high-income countries, specifically Japan.
  • The review identified various NTDs present in Japan, such as echinococcosis, dengue, and scabies, while also noting that several others have been imported into the country.
  • The research emphasized the need for improved public health responses, including the establishment of legal frameworks, better access to diagnostic tests, and more affordable treatment options for these diseases in Japan.

This study aimed to examine the changes that took place between 2015-2019 and 2020 and reveal how the COVID-19 pandemic affected financial contributions from donors. We used the Creditor Reporting System database of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to investigate donor disbursement. Focusing on the Group of Seven (G7) countries and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), we analyzed their development assistance for health (DAH) in 2020 and the change in their disbursement between 2015 and 2020.

Background: Mycetoma is a chronic disease affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissue endemic in the tropical and subtropical regions. Several bacteria and fungi can cause mycetoma, but fungal mycetoma (eumycetoma) is challenging because the treatment requires a combination of a long-term antifungal agent and surgery. Although the transmission route has not yet been elucidated, infection from the soil is a leading hypothesis.

June 2023

Online Research Club (http://www.onlineresearchclub.org), Nagasaki 852-8523, Japan.

In May 2022, the world witnessed the re-emergence of the zoonotic disease monkeypox. While this was not the first epidemic of this disease, what differentiated the outbreak was the rapid global spread and increase of cases, which led the WHO to declare monkeypox a global health emergency. Although the disease spreads mainly through inadequately cooked meat of various rodent species, this virus also shows droplet, respiratory, sexual, and even vertical transmission.

Environ Int

January 2024

School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering, College of Information and Biomedical Engineering, Pusan National University, Yangsan, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Recent studies have reported that air pollution is related to kidney diseases. However, the global evidence on the risk of death from acute kidney injury (AKI) owing to air pollution is limited. Therefore, we investigated the association between short-term exposure to air pollution-particulate matter ≤ 2.

Background: The impact of temperature on morbidity remains largely unknown. Moreover, extensive evidence indicates contrasting patterns between temperature-mortality and temperature-morbidity associations. A nationwide comparison of the impact of temperature on mortality and morbidity in more specific subgroups is necessary to strengthen understanding and help explore underlying mechanisms by identifying susceptible populations.

Rotavirus is the most common pathogen causing pediatric diarrhea and an important cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Previous evidence suggests that the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in national immunization schedules resulted in dramatic declines in disease burden but may also be changing the rotavirus genetic landscape and driving the emergence of new genotypes. We report genotype data of more than 16,000 rotavirus isolates from 40 countries participating in the Global Rotavirus Surveillance Network.
