Sex and sex hormones are thought to influence multiple sclerosis (MS) through effects on inflammation, myelination and neurodegeneration, and exogenous hormones have been explored for their therapeutic potential. However, our understanding of how sex hormones influence MS disease processes and outcomes remains incomplete. Furthermore, our current knowledge is derived primarily from studies that focus exclusively on cisgender populations with exclusion of gender-diverse people.

Paratyphoid B fever (PTB) is caused by an invasive lineage (phylogroup 1, PG1) of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B (SPB). However, little was known about the global population structure, geographic distribution, and evolution of this pathogen. Here, we report a whole-genome analysis of 568 historical and contemporary SPB PG1 isolates, obtained globally, between 1898 and 2021.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms limit the efficacy of currently available antibacterial therapies and pose significant clinical challenges. Pseudomonal biofilms are complicated further when other markers of persistence such as mucoid and hypermutable phenotypes are present. There is currently a paucity of data regarding the activity of the newer β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination ceftolozane/tazobactam against P.

The increasing use of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines has raised concerns about their potential toxicological effects, necessitating further investigation to ensure their safety. To address this issue, we aimed to evaluate the toxicological effects of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine candidates formulated with four different types of lipid nanoparticles in ICR mice, focusing on repeated doses and administration routes. We conducted an extensive analysis in which mice received the mRNA vaccine candidates intramuscularly (50 μg/head) twice at 2-week intervals, followed by necropsy at 2 and 14 dpsi (days post-secondary injection).

Aim: To describe the incidence, characteristics, success rates, and outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients receiving cricothyroidotomy.
Methods: Over an 18-year period, we retrospectively analysed patient care records and cardiac arrest registry data for cricothyroidotomy cases. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine associations between study characteristics and cricothyroidotomy success.

Aim: To understand, from a nursing perspective, factors affecting the use of prophylactic dressings to prevent pressure injuries in acute hospitalised adults.
Background: Pressure injury causes harm to patients and incurs significant costs to health services. Significant emphasis is placed on their prevention.

Background And Objective: Elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI) is a drug treatment for cystic fibrosis that is debatable for use in pregnant women. Fetal ocular changes following prenatal exposure and while breastfeeding to ETI have been reported. The aim of this study was to assess eye development in rat fetuses following in-utero exposure to ETI.

Background: Effectiveness of disease-modifying treatment (DMT) in people affected by primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) is limited. Whether specific subgroups may benefit more from DMT in a real-world setting remains unclear. Our aim was to investigate the potential effect of DMT on disability worsening among patients with PPMS stratified by different disability trajectories.

Background: Fiji is a Pacific Island nation grappling with the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). While genomic technologies are increasingly utilised to understand the emergence and spread of AMR globally, its application to inform outbreak responses in low- and middle-income settings has not been reported.
Methods: Through an established capacity building program, suspected carbapenem-resistant organisms (CRO) identified at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Fiji (Jan 2022-Oct 2023) underwent whole genome sequencing and analysis.

Background: For small papillary thyroid cancers (PTCs) with no lateral nodal involvement, American Thyroid Association guidelines recommend performing prophylactic central lymph node dissection (pCLND) if it influences further management. Our cohort study explored to what extent performing pCLND for small PTCs can de-escalate subsequent therapy including completion thyroidectomy and adjuvant radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation.
Methods: Adults with T1, T2, and cN0 PTCs were identified from 42 centers across the prospectively maintained Australian and New Zealand Thyroid Cancer Registry (ANZTCR) between 2017 and 2023.

Background: Recent evidence suggests that frailty may be a more reliable measure than age to predict outcomes following trauma. Frailty leads to prolonged hospitalisation and increased burden on the hospital system in older patients. The aim of this study is to review the prevalence of frailty in our trauma patients and the association of frailty with hospital-based and twelve-month outcomes.

Purpose: To evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a consumer co-designed telehealth intervention which aimed to reduce claimant distress by providing pain management strategies, informational and social support to people who had made a compensation claim following road traffic musculoskeletal injury.
Methods: Eleven claimant participants who were at risk of a poor outcome completed the intervention in a one-on-one setting with the same clinician delivering the program across all sessions. They were interviewed about their experience (acceptability and feasibility including the use of telehealth).

The impact of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the preferred nomenclature for NAFLD, on cardiovascular health and mortality among older adults is uncertain. As such, we aimed to identify whether MASLD increases the risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) (a composite of fatal coronary heart disease [excluding heart failure], nonfatal myocardial infarction, or fatal or nonfatal ischemic stroke), Atrial Fibrillation (AF), or all-cause mortality in older adults, and whether aspirin attenuates these risks in individuals with MASLD. This is a non-prespecified post-hoc analysis of the ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) randomized trial.

Shigella sonnei is a major cause of diarrhoea globally and is increasing in prevalence relative to other Shigella because of multiple demographic and environmental influences. This single-serotype species has traditionally received less attention in comparison to Shigella flexneri and Shigella dysenteriae, which were more common in low-income countries and more tractable in the laboratory. In recent years, we have learned that Shigella are highly complex and highly susceptible to environmental change, as exemplified by epidemiological trends and increasing relevance of S.

Evidence is increasing for digital health programs targeting the secondary prevention of stroke. We aimed to determine the feasibility of the novel Care Assistant and support Program for people after Stroke (CAPS) or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) by combining person-centred goal setting and risk-factor monitoring through a web-based clinician portal, SMS messages, a mobile application (app), and a wearable device. We conducted a 12-week mixed-methods, open-label feasibility study.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used in prostate cancer. Recent studies indicate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) demonstrates PSMA PET uptake. The diagnostic accuracy of PSMA PET for HCC is not known.
