Machine learning slice-wise whole-lung CT emphysema score correlates with airway obstruction.

Scaling the peak and steady-state aerobic power of running and walking humans.

Purpose: The first aim of this experiment was to evaluate the appropriateness of linear and non-linear (allometric) models to scale peak aerobic power (oxygen consumption) against body mass. The possibilities that oxygen consumption would scale allometrically across the complete metabolic range, and that the scaling exponents would differ significantly between basal and maximal-exercise states, were then evaluated. It was further hypothesised that the scaling exponent would increase in a stepwise manner with elevations in exercise intensity.

Pap smear is often employed as a screening test for diagnosing cervical pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions. Accurate identification of dysplastic changes amongst the cervical cells in a Pap smear image is thus essential for rapid diagnosis and prognosis. In their paper, Andriessen at al present a validation of fetal ECG analysis and the clinical STAN device in midgestation fetal lambs exposed to 25 minutes of umbilical cord occlusion. The study presents results that contrast remarkably from previously published experimental data which raises a number of questions and comments. The most striking finding of Andriessen et al is the recording of an extremely high number of alarms from the STAN equipment during control conditions when no alarms at all are expected.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? It is well established that muscle and bone atrophy in conditions of inactivity or unloading, but there is little information regarding the effect of a hypoxic environment on the time course of these deconditioning physiological systems. What is the main finding and its importance? The main finding is that a horizontal 10 day bed rest in normoxia results in typical muscle atrophy, which is not aggravated by hypoxia. Changes in bone mineral content or in metabolism were not detected after either normoxic or hypoxic bed rest.

Quantifying the degree of atrophy is done clinically by neuroradiologists following established visual rating scales. For these assessments to be reliable the rater requires substantial training and experience, and even then the rating agreement between two radiologists is not perfect. We have developed a model we call AVRA (Automatic Visual Ratings of Atrophy) based on machine learning methods and trained on 2350 visual ratings made by an experienced neuroradiologist.

In this work, a wide-range operating synaptic device based on organic ferroelectricity has been demonstrated. The device possesses a simple two-terminal structure by using a ferroelectric phase-separated polymer blend as the active layer and gold/indium tin oxide (ITO) as the top/bottom electrodes, and exhibits a distinctive history-dependent resistive switching behavior at room temperature. And the device with low energy consumption (∼50 fJ μm per synaptic event) can provide a reliable synaptic function of potentiation, depression and the complex memory behavior simulation of differential responses to diverse stimulations.

Purpose: We hypothesized that 5 weeks of endurance training with blood flow restriction (R-training), providing relative ischemia and stimulation of the muscle chemoreflex, would decrease the exercise pressor reflex (EPR) when compared to training with the same workload in a free-flow condition (NR-training).

Methods: 10 subjects performed one-leg knee-extension training four times a week during a 5-week period. Both legs were trained with identical workload, with one leg being trained during flow-restriction induced by lower body positive pressure.
