Can auditory evoked responses elicited to click and/or verbal sound identify children with or at risk of central auditory processing disorder: A scoping review.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

August 2023

Audiology and Speech Pathology Program, School of Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: (Central) auditory processing disorders, (C)APDs are clinically identified using behavioral tests. However, changes in attention and motivation may easily affect true identification. Although auditory electrophysiological tests, such as Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR), are independent of most confounding cognitive factors, there is no consensus that click and/or speech-evoked ABR can be used to identify children with or at-risk of (C)APDs due to heterogeneity among studies.

Dysphagia in Robin Sequence can be present in varying degrees, requiring multidisciplinary management and specific swallowing assessment by a specialist. Most studies published to date have evaluated only respiratory outcomes, and the available evidence on the improvement of swallowing is questionable. To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating swallowing in children with Robin Sequence before and after airway clearance procedures.

Purpose: This research aimed to identify reliable tasks discriminating French-speaking adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) from their peers with typical language (TL) and to assess which linguistic domains represent areas of particular weakness in DLD. Unlike English, morphosyntax has not been identified as a special area of weakness when compared with lexicosemantics in French preschoolers with DLD. Since there is evidence that subject-verb number agreement is consolidated in later childhood, one might expect morphosyntax to be a particular weakness and marker of French DLD only in (pre)adolescence.

May 2022

School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio.

This article explores the clinical applications of Audiology Practice Standards Organization (APSO) Standards 2 and 13, both of which keep us fully focused on the patient-as-person. The topics within Standard 2 include audiologists' interpersonal communication skills, specifically clarity (ensuring patient comprehension) and empathy (understanding the patient's experiences). Standard 2 also addresses the topic of health literacy, which has been recently expanded to consider not only the degree to which individuals are able to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions but also how organizations equitably support those necessary skills.

The Multilingual Picture Database.

Sci Data

July 2022

School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, University of Reading, Reading, UK.

The growing interdisciplinary research field of psycholinguistics is in constant need of new and up-to-date tools which will allow researchers to answer complex questions, but also expand on languages other than English, which dominates the field. One type of such tools are picture datasets which provide naming norms for everyday objects. However, existing databases tend to be small in terms of the number of items they include, and have also been normed in a limited number of languages, despite the recent boom in multilingualism research.

Many mental disorders (MD) share common etiology, fuelling debates about the specificity of clinical categories and whether the presence of specific risk factors (RF) can distinguish among them. The study of developmental language disorder (DLD), more specifically, has been further hindered by a lack of consensus regarding its definition. These limitations increase the risk of under-detection and lifelong consequences for affected children.

Many barriers to accessibility exist for Medicare beneficiaries seeking hearing and balance care such as availability of providers, coverage for services, and ability to pay. Other statutory and administrative barriers exist including the need for physician orders to have audiology services covered, the classification of audiologists as suppliers of "other diagnostic tests" under Medicare payer policy, and non-coverage of certain audiologic management and treatment services. Nearly two decades of legislative efforts have not resulted in any substantial changes to U.

Firearms produce peak sound pressure levels (peak SPL) between ∼130 and 175 dB peak SPL, creating significant risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in those exposed to firearm noise during occupational, recreational, and/or military operations. Noise-induced tinnitus and hearing loss are common in military service members, public safety officers, and hunters/shooters. Given the significant risk of NIHL due to firearm and other noise sources, there is an interest in, and demand for, interventions to prevent and/or treat NIHL in high-risk populations.

Difficulty in acquiring object clitics (OCs), and the omission of OCs more specifically, is used as a marker of developmental language disorder (DLD) in children learning French. Research also suggests that OCs are a complex morphosyntactic property of French and, as such, they could be particularly taxing for working memory (WM) resources. In light of previous research, it seems more likely that difficulties with OCs could be a marker for atypical early language acquisition.
