A tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) has been implemented in various jurisdictions. Though research confirmed this tax to reduce sugar consumption and to prevent chronic diseases, it also revealed concerns: one concern relates to the small proportion of sugar in the diet coming from SSBs; and another concern relates to the disproportional tax burden to low-income groups. To inform public health decision makers on alternatives, we examined three 'real world' taxation and subsidy scenarios in Canada: 1) a CAD$0.

Department of Social Work and Social Policy, School of Sociology and Population Studies, Renmin University of China, Beijing, China.

Background: Many studies have found that engaging in activities, including physical exercise, social interaction, and cognitive training, is beneficial for preventing cognitive decline among older adults; however, the demographic differences in the association between activity engagement and cognitive functions remain understudied. This study investigates: (a) the influence of activity engagement on cognitive functions among Chinese older adults, and (b) the moderating roles of age and gender in these associations .

Methods: The data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2018, which included 9803 participants aged 60 or older.

School of Economics & China Institute for Vitalizing Border Areas and Enriching the People (VBEP), Minzu University of China, Beijing 100081, China.

Adolescent developmental outcomes can vary significantly by differences in ethnicity. While previous studies have examined the impacts of adolescents' own ethnicity on their development, little research has been conducted about the impacts of the ethnicity of both parents as an important family background factor which is likely to expose adolescents to a variety of growth environments. Using nationally representative data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) surveys, we examine the relationship between parental ethnicity (including both monoethnic families and interethnic families with intermarried Han and ethnic minority groups) and adolescent developmental outcomes, measured by academic performance, cognitive development, and health.

February 2023

School of Sociology and Population Studies, Renmin University of China, Beijing, China.

Objectives: Age stereotypes and expectations about one's own aging commence in childhood, while most research focuses on predictive associations with midlife cognition and health outcomes in later life. This study instead aims to examine adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contributing to multiple measures of subjective age (SA) among Chinese older adults and test whether these relationships differ by household registration (hukou).

Methods: In a representative sample of Chinese older adults aged 60 and older from the 2018 China Longitudinal Aging and Social Survey (n = 7,815), ordinary least squares is used to examine the associations between ACEs and 3 facets of SA: felt age, look age, and self-defined aging standard.
