Combining the pharmacological properties of the 1,2,3-triazole and dihydropyrimidinone classes of compounds, two small families of mono- and di(1,2,3-triazole)-dihydropyrimidinone hybrids, A and B, were previously synthesized. The main objective of this work was to investigate the potential anti-Alzheimer effects of these hybrids. The inhibitory activities of cholinesterases (AChE and BuChE), antioxidant activity, and the inhibitory mechanism through in silico (molecular docking) and in solution (STD-NMR) experiments were evaluated.

On murine N2a cells, 7-ketocholesterol induced an oxiapotophagic mode of cell death characterized by oxidative stress (reactive oxygen species overproduction on whole cells and at the mitochondrial level; lipid peroxidation), apoptosis induction (caspase-9, -3 and -7 cleavage, PARP degradation) and autophagy (increased ratio LC3-II / LC3-I). Oxidative stress was strongly attenuated by diphenyleneiodonium chloride which inhibits NAD(P)H oxidase. Mitochondrial and peroxisomal morphological and functional changes were also observed.

Diazotrophic bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of a wild wheat ancestor, grown from its refuge area in the Fertile Crescent, were found to be efficient Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), upon interaction with an elite wheat cultivar. In nitrogen-starved plants, they increased the amount of nitrogen in the seed crop (per plant) by about twofold. A bacterial growth medium was developed to investigate the effects of bacterial exudates on root development in the elite cultivar, and to analyze the exo-metabolomes and exo-proteomes.

Age-related diseases for which there are no effective treatments include cardiovascular diseases; neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease; eye disorders such as cataract and age-related macular degeneration; and, more recently, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). These diseases are associated with plasma and/or tissue increases in cholesterol derivatives mainly formed by auto-oxidation: 7-ketocholesterol, also known as 7-oxo-cholesterol, and 7β-hydroxycholesterol. The formation of these oxysterols can be considered as a consequence of mitochondrial and peroxisomal dysfunction, leading to increased in oxidative stress, which is accentuated with age.

Lipid peroxidation-derived reactive carbonyl species (RCS) such as acrolein and 4-hydroxynonenal pose health risks. We characterized the RCS-scavenging reactions of tea catechins in an aqueous solution and in baked cake. Acrolein's reaction with each of the major tea catechins (epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin gallate) resulted in the formation of mono-, di-, and tri-acrolein conjugates of each catechin as revealed by our LC-linear ion trap MS analysis.

The aminothiol cysteamine, derived from coenzyme A degradation in mammalian cells, presents several biological applications.
