The aggregation and accumulation of amyloid β 42 (Aβ42) peptides on the surface of brain cells is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we used a unique brain-mimetic open system that continuously flows Aβ42 solution to analyze the initial aggregation and adsorptive nature of Aβ42 at physiological concentrations on the lipid membrane. The open system accelerated the adsorption and dimerization kinetics.

Phase diagrams and crystallography are standard tools for studying structural phase transitions, whereas acquiring kinetic information at the atomistic level has been considered essential but challenging. The η-to-θ phase transition of alumina is unidirectional in bulk and retains the crystal lattice orientation. We report a rare example of a statistical kinetics study showing that for nanoparticles on a bulk Al(OH) surface, this phase transition occurs nondeterministically through an ergodic equilibrium through the molten state, and the memory of the lattice orientation is lost in this process.

Organisms adapt to predictable environmental changes via a biological mechanism called priming. Phototropin (phot) is a plant-specific blue light photoreceptor that mediates daily light-induced responses, such as chloroplast relocation, stomatal opening, and phototropism, to optimize photosynthesis. Phot also functions as a thermosensor for chloroplast relocation that may sense daily temperature decreases at night, thereby modulating light-induced responses at dawn; however, this hypothesis has not yet been fully explored.

Plants control their stomatal apertures to optimize carbon dioxide uptake and water loss. Stomata open in response to light through the phosphorylation of the penultimate residue, Thr, of plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase in guard cells. Stomata close in response to drought and the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA), and ABA suppresses the light-induced activation of PM H+-ATPase.

Phosphorus (P)-deficient soils serve as crucial habitats for endangered plant species. Microbiomes play pivotal roles in soil element cycling and in determining a plant's adaptability to the environment. However, the relationship between the endangered plant, microbiome, and soil stoichiometric traits, and how it affects plant adaption to P-deficient habitats remain largely unexplored.

V-shaped polyaromatic amphiphiles (s) form micelle-like nonbonded self-assemblies in aqueous solution and feature prominent properties of encapsulation and solubilization for various types of hydrophobic molecules. To understand microscopic molecular characteristics underlying the wide capability of solubilization, the atomic-level molecular structures of the self-assemblies of s were investigated by microsecond molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD simulations showed that s spontaneously formed quasi-stable self-assemblies, in close agreement with experimental observations.

The rational design of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with both high crystallinity and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is of crucial importance for achieving high-efficiency and low-energy-loss organic solar cells (OSCs). However, increasing the crystallinity of an NFA tends to decrease its PLQY, which results in a high non-radiative energy loss in OSCs. Here we demonstrate that the crystallinity and PLQY of NFAs can be fine-tuned by asymmetrically adapting the branching position of alkyl chains on the thiophene unit of the L8-BO acceptor.

Near-infrared wavelength-selective soft actuators have attracted much attention for applications in microsystems in bioliving. It is desirable for the photothermal conversion materials in the actuators to be downsized to the molecular scale. However, in conventional actuator materials using copolymer gels composed of thermosensitive and photothermal conversion molecule-coordinated monomers, the strong cross-linking of molecules in the networks impairs the actuator deformation.

Monomer insertion, leading to the formation of an activated monomer complex, is a critical step in cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of cyclic monomers, such as ε-caprolactone (CL). In this study, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the structural and electronic properties of four activated complexes at two Zr:B ratios (1:2 and 1:1), where Zr is the cationic zirconocene catalyst, Cp₂ZrMe⁺, and B is the borate cocatalyst, [MeB(CF)] or [B(CF)]. Steric hindrance at the reactive site was analyzed using topographic steric maps, while inter- and intramolecular interactions of the complex systems were examined through the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analyses.

The secondary near-infrared region (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) offers a noninvasive and light-controllable treatment option for deep-seated cancers. However, the development of NIR-II photothermal agents (NIR-II PTAs) that possess the desired properties of high molar absorption coefficient (ε), fluorescence quantum yield (QY), and photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) remain a challenge due to the contradiction between radiative and nonradiative processes. Herein, we propose a novel side-chain heteroatom substitution engineering strategy to simultaneously enhance ε, QY, and PCE by modifying the molecular planarity.

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins.
