School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Wuhan Polytechnic University, Wuhan, Hubei 430023, China.

Two-dimensional montmorillonite nanosheet (MMTNS) is desirable building block for fabricating multifunctional materials as due to its extraordinary properties. In practical applications, however, the concentration of MMTNS prepared by exfoliation is normally too low to be used for material assembling. The general thermal-concentration method is effective, however, it can be time-consuming and require a lot of energy.

Mining activities cause surface subsidence and the formation of subsidence lakes, which dynamically change with the continuous coal mining activities. Under the combined influence of various human activities such as agriculture, aquaculture, and floating photovoltaic (FPV), the lake environment undergoes continuous changes, thereby altering the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in the sediment. This study focused on the subsidence lakes in the Huainan coalfield in eastern China to examine the REEs content in the sediment, elucidated the temporal variations and geochemical characteristics of REEs distribution, explored the main controlling factors of REEs in the sediment, and revealed the migration and transformation behavior of REEs during dynamic subsidence processes.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzes how varying the amount of waste rock and the cement-sand ratio affects the properties of filling materials used in mining, focusing on factors like fluidity, strength, and interface behavior.
  • - Results indicate that the optimal mix for maximum strength is 60% waste rock with a cement-sand ratio of 1:4, after which both fluidity and compressive strength show a decline.
  • - Microstructural analysis reveals that hydration products contribute to a denser material structure, enhancing compressive strength, and a damage model was developed to guide mine safety and engineering design.

Electronic address:

Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) water fluctuation creates high water level (HWL) and low water level (LWL) condition in TGR aquatic ecosystem. HWL fluies significant nutrients, mainly introducing carbon and nitrogen into the ecosystem. The nitrogen input is a concern for water quality management of TGR since the possible eutrophication caused by nitrogen spike.

Current flotation practices using lime or cyanide as depressants in chalcopyrite and pyrite separation have significant disadvantages, such as substantial reagent consumption, high slurry pH, and environmental hazards. This work aimed to explore the utilization and mechanisms of tannic acid (TA) as an eco-friendly alternative to lime or cyanide in chalcopyrite-pyrite separation. Flotation results showed that TA selectively depressed pyrite yet allowed chalcopyrite to float at neutral or alkaline pH.

Riparian soils in the lower sections of the Lhasa River were chosen as the research focus, to examine the characteristics and sources of heavy metals in riparian soils of high-cold regions. To investigate the influence of various factors on the geographical distribution of heavy metals, three horizontal and one vertical profiles were considered. The geoaccumulation index, prospective ecological risk index, and enrichment factor were used to evaluate the extent of soil contamination.

November 2023

Key Laboratory of Nano-Minerals and Pollution Control of Anhui Higher Education Institutes, Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, 230009, China; Institute of Environmental Minerals and Materials, School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, 230009, China.

Birnessite plays a crucial role in regulating the fate of contaminants in soil, which is affected by the crystal structure of birnessite. In this study, the transformation of triclinic birnessite to hexagonal birnessite was examined at various pH values, and their reactivity towards norfloxacin was investigated. The findings indicate that the conversion from triclinic birnessite to hexagonal birnessite occurs under pH conditions lower than 7.

Species functional traits can influence pathogen transmission processes, and consequently affect species' host status, pathogen diversity, and community-level infection risk. We here investigated, for 143 European waterbird species, effects of functional traits on host status and pathogen diversity (subtype richness) for avian influenza virus at species level. We then explored the association between functional diversity and HPAI H5Nx occurrence at the community level for 2016/17 and 2021/22 epidemics in Europe.

Environ Pollut

October 2023

National Engineering Laboratory of Coal Mine Ecological Environment Protection, Huainan, 232001, Anhui, China.

The Hg released from coal mining activities can endanger soil ecosystems and pose a risk to human health. Understanding the accumulation characteristics of mercury (Hg) in coal mining soil is important for effectively controlling Hg emissions and developing measures for the prevention and control of Hg contamination. To identify the potential sources of Hg in soils, the Hg concentration and isotopic composition characteristics of raw coal and different topsoil types from the areas surrounding a coal mine were determined in this study.

Sci Total Environ

December 2023

Hubei Key Laboratory of Mineral Resources Processing and Environment, School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan 430070, China; The James Hutton Institute, Craigiebuckler, Aberdeen AB15 8QH, UK. Electronic address:

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are the most ubiquitous and highly used plasticizers in plastic products globally, yet studies on the spatial variation, risks, and their correlation with microplastics (MPs) are limited, particularly throughout the Yangtze River (the largest river in China/Asia). Therefore, this study investigated for the first time the PAEs pollution characteristics throughout the Yangtze River sediments, studied the environmental factors linked to the distribution of PAEs, and explored their potential as chemical indicators for interpreting pollution patterns of MPs. Totally 14 out of 16 PAEs were detected in sediments, with total concentrations ranging from 84.

Sauropterygia was a taxonomically and ecomorphologically diverse clade of Mesozoic marine reptiles spanning the Early Triassic to the Late Cretaceous. Sauropterygians are traditionally divided into two groups representing two markedly different body plans - the short-necked, durophagous Placodontia and the long-necked Eosauropterygia - whereas Saurosphargidae, a small clade of armoured marine reptiles, is generally considered as the sauropterygian sister-group. However, the early evolutionary history of sauropterygians and their phylogenetic relationships with other groups within Diapsida are still incompletely understood.
