With the rapid growth of electric vehicles in China, the number of spent power lithium-ion batteries is dramatically increased. Considering the environmental risk, security risk, and potential resource value, China has issued a series of laws and regulations to manage the spent power lithium-ion batteries. This work employs the material flow analysis method to evaluate the material flows of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn during the life cycle of power lithium-ion batteries under the framework of China's recycling policy system.

This study prepared and characterized bamboo-derived biochar loaded with different ratios of iron and manganese; evaluated its remediation performance in arsenic-contaminated soil by studying the changes in various environmental factors, arsenic speciation, and arsenic leaching amount in the soil after adding different materials; proposed the optimal ratio and mechanism of iron-manganese removal of arsenic; and explained the multivariate relationship between enzyme activity and soil environmental factors based on biological information. Treatment with Fe-Mn-modified biochar increased the organic matter, cation exchange capacity, and N, P, K, and other nutrient contents. During the remediation process, O-containing functional groups such as Mn-O/As and Fe-O/As were formed on the surface of the biochar, promoting the transformation of As from the mobile fraction to the residual fraction and reducing the phytotoxicity of As, and the remediation ability for As was superior to that of Fe-modified biochar.

The Jiangcang Basin is an important mining area of the former Qilian Mountain large coal base in Qinghai Province, and understanding the groundwater circulation mechanism is the basis for studying the hydrological effects of permafrost degradation in alpine regions. In this study, hydrogeochemical and multiple isotope tracer analysis methods are used to understand the chemical evolution and circulation mechanisms of the groundwater in the typical alpine region of the Jiangcang Basin. The diversity of the groundwater hydrochemistry in the study area reflects the complexity of the hydrogeochemical environment in which it is located.

The separation behavior of a variety of emerging contaminants, including nine antibiotics and six estrogens commonly reported in natural environment, by four commercial nanofiltration and reverse osmosis (NF/RO) membranes at various water conditions (pH, concentration) was investigated. The contaminant rejection at pH 6.0 followed a decreasing trend of XLE (94%-100%) ≈ NF90 (88%-100%) > NF270 (25%-85%) > DL (16%-75%).

Fouling of landfill leachate, a biofilm formation process on the surface of the collection system, migration pipeline and treatment system causes low efficiency of leachate transportation and treatment and increases cost for maintenance of those facilities. In addition, landfill leachate fouling might accumulate pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing threats to the environment. Characterization of the landfill leachate fouling and its associated environmental behavior is essential for the management of fouling.

Knowledge on corrosion behaviors and kinetics of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in aquatic environment is particularly significant for understanding the reactivity, longevity and stability of nZVI, as well as providing theoretical guidance for developing a cost-effective nZVI-based technology and designing large-scale applications. Herein, this review gives a holistic overview on the corrosion behaviors and kinetics of nZVI in water. Firstly, Eh-pH diagram is introduced to predict the thermodynamics trend of iron corrosion.

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), located at the land-sea interface, provide critical ecological services including the buffering of anthropogenic pollutants. Understanding the interactions between trace element (TE) loads in BCEs and socioeconomic development is imperative to informing management plans to address pollution issues. However, the identification of anthropogenic TE pollution in BCEs remains uncertain due to the complex geochemical and depositional processes and asynchronous socioeconomic development along continental coastlines.

Wide usage of plastic coupled with mismanagement has created a humongous environmental hazard threatening entire ecosystems. To date, the potential effects of plastic debris-induced soil nutrition substance changes and the relevant microbial metabolic behavior remain unclear. Here, we studied the effect of plastic films polyethylene and polylactic acid in differential soil environments (farmland, woodland, and wetland) for 120 days.

Understanding the dynamics of avian gut fungal communities and potentially pathogenic species across different seasons is crucial for assessing their health and ecological interactions. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was employed to examine the changes in gut fungal communities and the presence of potential pathogens between different seasons in captive Baikal teal and common teal. Between the summer and autumn seasons, both duck species showed significant differences in fungal diversity and community composition.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are significant sources of antibiotics. However, the effects of antibiotics on MSW decomposition process and methanogenesis during solid waste decomposition remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs) of antibiotics (200 μg/kg for each antibiotic) on MSW decomposition and methanogenesis in bioreactors treated with and without eight antibiotics (three tetracyclines, three sulfonamides, and two macrolides).

Thermal treatment is a mainstream technique to separate plastic components from waste crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) modules. In this study, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted for a better understanding of the characteristics of plastic components mainly poly(ethylene-co-vinyl) acetate (EVA) binder and polyfluoroethylene composite membrane (TPT) backsheet in waste c-Si PV panels through thermal treatment at four different heating rates (5-20°C·min) under nitrogen and air conditions, respectively. The thermal process of the EVA binder whether in a nitrogen or air atmosphere could be divided into two phases, which were 300-400°C and 400-515°C in nitrogen with the total weight loss reached 99.

The impact of high antibiotic and heavy metal pollution levels on biological nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) remains poorly understood, posing a global concern regarding the issue spread of antibiotic resistance induced by these contaminants. Herein, we investigated the effects of gadolinium (Gd) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), commonly found in medical wastewater, on biological nitrogen removal systems and microbial characteristics, and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Our findings indicated that high SMX and Gd(III) concentrations adversely affected nitrification and denitrification, with Gd(III) exerting a strong inhibitory effect on microbial activity.

Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) are important nutrients, and their ecological stoichiometric characteristics can reflect the quality and fertility capacity of soil, which is critical to understanding the stable mechanisms of estuarine wetland ecosystems. Under global changes, the increase in salinity and flooding caused by sea level rise will lead to changes in biogeochemical processes in estuarine wetlands, which is expected to affect the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of soil C, N, and P and ultimately interfere with the stability of wetland ecosystems. However, it remains unclear how the C, N, and P ecological stoichiometric characteristics respond to the water-salt environment in estuarine wetlands.

PCR-based techniques routinely employed for the detection of mutated linear DNA molecules, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), require large nucleotide sections on both sides of the mutation for primer annealing. This means that DNA fragments with a mutation positioned closer to the extremities are unlikely to be detected. Thus, sensors capable of recognizing linear DNA with characteristic mutations closer to the ends would be advantageous over the state-of-the-art approaches.
