Growing evidence indicates that plant community structure and traits have changed under climate warming, especially in cold or high-elevation regions. However, the impact of these warming-induced changes on ecosystem carbon sequestration remains unclear. Using a warming experiment on the high-elevation Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, we found that warming not only increased plant species height but also altered species composition, collectively resulting in a taller plant community associated with increased net ecosystem productivity (NEP).

In recent years, the combined pollution of PM and O in China, particularly in economically developed regions such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), has garnered significant attention due to its potential implications. This study systematically investigated the changes of PM and O and their associated human health effects in the GBA, utilizing observational data spanning from 2015 to 2019. The findings revealed a spatial trend indicating a gradual decrease in PM levels from the northwest to the southeast, while the spatial distribution of MDA8 O demonstrated an opposing pattern to that of PM.

Efficient ozone decomposition in high humidity environments using novel iron-doped OMS-2-loaded activated carbon material.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

May 2024

School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Jiangsu University of Technology, Changzhou, Jiangsu, 213001, People's Republic of China.

This study effectively addresses the rapid deactivation of manganese-based catalysts in humid environments during ozone decomposition by introducing iron-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Fe-OMS-2) catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC). By optimizing the doping ratio of Fe-OMS-2, the Fe-OMS-2/AC catalyst achieves nearly 100% ozone decomposition efficiency across a wide range of relative humidity levels (0 to 60%), even at elevated air flow rates of 800 L·g·h, outperforming standalone AC, Fe-OMS-2, or a simple mixture of OMS-2 and AC. The Fe-OMS-2/AC catalyst features a porous surface and a mesoporous structure, providing a substantial specific surface area that facilitates the uniform distribution of the Fe-OMS-2 active phase on the AC surface.

Stag beetles, recognized as common saproxylic insects, are valued for their vibrant coloration and distinctive morphology. These beetles play a crucial ecological role in decomposition and nutrient cycling, serving as a vital functional component in ecosystem functioning. Although previous studies have confirmed that stag beetles are predominantly fungivores, the fluctuations in their intestinal fungal communities at different developmental stages remain poorly understood.

In order to comprehensively utilize iron ore tailings (IOTs), the possibility of using IOTs as raw materials for the preparation of cementitious composites (IOTCCs) was investigated, and IOTCC was further applied to mine interface pollution control. The mechanical properties, hydration products, wind erosion resistance, and freeze-thaw (F-T) cycle resistance of IOTCCs were evaluated rigorously. The activity index of iron tailings increased from 42% to 78% after grinding for 20 s.

Impact of hydrogen sulfide on anammox and nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation coupled technologies.

Water Res

June 2024

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales 2052, Australia. Electronic address:

The coupling between anammox and nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) has been considered a sustainable technology for nitrogen removal from sidestream wastewater and can be implemented in both membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) and granular bioreactor. However, the potential influence of the accompanying hydrogen sulfide (HS) in the anaerobic digestion (AD)-related methane-containing mixture on anammox/n-DAMO remains unknown. To fill this gap, this work first constructed a model incorporating the C/N/S-related bioprocesses and evaluated/calibrated/validated the model using experimental data.

Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)), as a green halogen-free flame retardant, has attracted significant attention in the field of flame retardant composite materials. In addition to conventional indicators such as purity and whiteness, Mg(OH) is required to take the form of regular hexagonal sheets to ensure the dispersion of composite materials. We use irregular large particles of Mg(OH) prepared by the magnesium factory in western Qinghai as raw materials to study the influence of alkali metal ions K and Na mainly present in salt lakes on the physicochemical properties of Mg(OH).

Scatter-hoarding rodents play important roles in plant regeneration and species coexistence in many forest ecosystems. Cache pilferage, the behavior of rodents seeking or relocating seeds cached by other individuals, is ubiquitous during the scatter-hoarding process. The effects of canopy openness on cache pilferage have received considerable attention, most of which have focused on the comparison between full canopy cover and completely open areas, such as forest gaps.

Design, synthesis and structure-activity relationship of 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives as highly potent hCYP1B1 inhibitors.

Bioorg Med Chem Lett

July 2024

Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of TCM Chemical Biology, Institute of Interdisciplinary Integrative Medicine Research, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai 201203, China. Electronic address:

Human cytochrome P450 1B1 enzyme (hCYP1B1), a member of hCYP1 subfamily, plays a crucial role in multiple diseases by participating in many metabolic pathways. Although a suite of potent hCYP1B1 inhibitors have been previously reported, most of them also act as aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists that can up-regulate the expression of hCYP1B1 and then counteract their inhibitory potential in living systems. This study aimed to develop novel efficacious hCYP1B1 inhibitors that worked well in living cells but without AhR agonist effects.

The water produced during the oxidative esterification reaction occupies the active sites and reduces the activity of the catalyst. In order to reduce the influence of water on the reaction system, a hydrophobic catalyst was prepared for the one-step oxidative esterification of methylacrolein (MAL) and methanol. The catalyst was synthesized by loading the active component Au onto ZnO using the deposition-precipitation method, followed by constructing the silicon shell on Au/ZnO using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to introduce hydrophobic groups.

In order to efficiently and accurately control coal dust pollution in coal mining faces, this study addresses the insufficient research on the dust generation mechanism during cutting. Firstly, a similar experimental platform for simulating coal wall cutting with a drum cutter was used to investigate the changes in coal wall fragmentation and dust generation at drum speeds of 35 r/min, 50 r/min, 65 r/min, and 80 r/min. The experimental results revealed that the degree of coal wall fragmentation and dust generation increased with the increase in rotational speed, leading to a wider range of particle size distribution and an increase in the generation of fine dust particles.

The first chromosome-level genome of the stag beetle Dorcus hopei Saunders, 1854 (Coleoptera: Lucanidae).

Sci Data

April 2024

Key Laboratory of Genetic Evolution & Animal Models, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Kunming, Yunnan, 650223, China.

Stag beetles (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) represent a significant saproxylic assemblage in forest ecosystems and are noted for their enlarged mandibles and male polymorphism. Despite their relevance as ideal models for the study of exaggerated mandibles that aid in attracting mates, the regulatory mechanisms associated with these traits remain understudied, and restricted by the lack of high-quality reference genomes for stag beetles. To address this limitation, we successfully assembled the first chromosome-level genome of a representative species Dorcus hopei.
