Polymeric membrane ion-selective electrode based on potential-modulated ion transfer: ultrasensitive measurement of oceanic pH.

Chem Commun (Camb)

November 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Coastal Environmental Processes and Ecological Remediation, Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research (YIC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shandong Key Laboratory of Coastal Environmental Processes, YICCAS, Yantai, Shandong 264003, P. R. China.

The application of a potentiometric pH electrode in ocean acidification observation is still a challenge due to its poor sensitivity to small pH changes. Herein, a simple approach to remarkably improve the detection precision of a polymeric membrane ion-selective electrode is proposed based on the potential-modulated ion transfer mechanism. The present sensing strategy displays highly sensitive responses to small pH changes for seawater analysis with a precision of 5 μpH, which is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the conventional pH electrode.

Background/objectives: Most older adults experience cognitive and physical functioning problems; however, they require the ability to learn skills in response to age-related or social environmental changes for independent living. This study aimed to clarify the associations between age-related physical activity and performance in skill learning tasks based on cognitive function.

Methods: Fifty-eight adults participated in this study and were divided into two groups: the control group (aged under 65 years) and older adult group (aged over 65).

Musculoskeletal injury (MSKi), depression, anxiety, and burnout place a considerable burden on emergency services personnel and healthcare providers (HCP). Physical fitness is related to both mental and physical health in these populations, but females in these are hugely underrepresented in this literature. As female representation in first-responder and HCP roles increases, the need for female-specific research is needed.

In this study, we aimed to examine whether a wheelchair cushion placed directly atop a sling seat or deflection of the sling seat compensated by a pad along with the placement of a wheelchair cushion changed sitting pressure. Additionally, we examined whether these additions changed sitting comfort. For twenty healthy adults who consented to participate, measurements were taken for three types of cushions, each with and without padding, under six conditions.

Background: Regular exercise can mitigate side effects of cancer treatment. However, only a small proportion of adults with cancer meet exercise guidelines, and older adults (> 65 years) are underrepresented in cancer rehabilitation research. Peer support facilitates health-promoting behaviours in general populations, but interventions merging exercise and peer support for older adults with cancer are not examined.

Collective endothelial migration is a hallmark of wound healing, which is regulated by spatial concentration gradients of extracellular biochemical factors. Arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptides play a vital role in regulating cell migration through specific binding to integrins. In this study, a micro-fluidic technology combined with a photopolymerization technique is developed to create gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-based substrates with various concentration gradients of RGD peptides.

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with interstitial lung disease (ILD) often face worse symptoms and may avoid physical activities, leading to a need for effective rehabilitation strategies.
  • This review analyzed randomized controlled trials to determine how pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) impacts both functional capacity and performance in ILD patients, focusing on exercise training and support.
  • Results showed that PR significantly improved functional capacity, notably in the 6-Minute Walk Test, while only self-reported physical activity levels improved for functional performance, indicating that more focus is needed on performance measures.
