We examined whether the age of patients with rheumatoid arthritis was associated with adverse events (AEs) caused by biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs).Patients with rheumatoid arthritis using bDMARDs from Showa University Hospital, Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital, and Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital from January 2005 to December 2017 were eligible for this retrospective cohort study. The maximum observation period was determined to be 1 year.

This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the HCAHPS and to examine its structural validity, criterion-related validity and internal consistency reliability.
Design: Multicentere cross-sectional study.

Aim: There is growing recognition of the need to hold advance care planning discussions. Older adults who have direct interpersonal involvement with dying family members might begin to consider their own end-of-life care. This study examined the associations between experiences of being with a dying family member and advance care planning discussions among Japanese older adults.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major comorbidity in hospitalised patients. Patients with severe AKI require continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) when they are haemodynamically unstable. CRRT is prescribed assuming it is delivered over 24 hours.

Background: The gut microbiota is involved in the pathophysiology of obesity. It is known that oral antibiotics manipulate the gut microbiota; however, the impact on host metabolism of obese adults without bacterial infection has not been systematically summarized.
Methods: We searched for randomized, placebo-controlled trials that investigated the effects of oral antibiotics on the metabolic status in obese adults via Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library.

Background: In chronic kidney disease (CKD), patients' adherence to prescriptions for diet and for medications might depend on the degree to which they have hope that they will enjoy life, and that hope could vary with the stage of CKD. The aims of this study were to quantify both the association of CKD stage with health-related hope (HR-Hope), and the association of that hope with psychological and physiological manifestations of adherence.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 461 adult CKD patients, some of whom were receiving dialysis.

The Short Form 12 Survey (SF-12) three-component model is used to compute health-related quality of life (QoL): it includes physical, mental, and role-social QoL. We asked whether the SF-12 three-component model is associated with disability-free survival. People ≥65 years old were included ( = 2634).

Background: Pelvic fractures are common among blunt trauma patients, and timely and accurate diagnosis can improve patient outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether physical examinations are sufficient in this context. This study aims to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of physical examination for pelvic fracture among blunt trauma patients.

Introduction/objectives: This study examined whether phase angle (PhA) is associated with hip osteoarthritis (HOA) severity and quadriceps strength in patients with HOA.
Method: A series of 549 patients with HOA, obtained from the Screening for People Suffering Sarcopenia in the Orthopedic cohort of Kobe study, were analyzed. PhA and quadriceps strength were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis and a handheld dynamometer, respectively.

Recent studies have reported that high mean corpuscular volume (MCV) might be associated with mortality in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the question of whether a high MCV confers a risk for mortality in Japanese patients remains unclear. We conducted a longitudinal analysis of a cohort of 8571 patients using data derived from the Japan Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (J-DOPPS) phases 1 to 5.

Purpose: Little is known about the fall risk of older adults with overactive bladder, especially in the absence of urgency incontinence. We evaluated the impacts of overactive bladder with and without urgency incontinence (overactive bladder wet and overactive bladder dry) on the fall risk in older adults, and investigated the importance of overactive bladder as a predictor of falls by using tree based models.
Materials And Methods: This prospective cohort study included 630 community dwelling, independent older adults 75 years old or older who attended a health checkup in 2017 with a 1-year followup.

In this retrospective single-center cohort study, we investigated the impact of preoperative use of an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor (AR) blocker on the outcome of single-session extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) in 193 male patients who underwent SWL for a single ureteral calculus between 2006 and 2016. We reviewed their medical records to obtain the data on the preoperative use of alpha-1 AR blockers. The primary outcome was treatment success after single-session SWL.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a high incidence of fractures. However, the pathophysiology of this disease is not fully understood, and limited therapeutic interventions are available. This study aimed to determine the impact of type 1 angiotensin II receptor blockade (AT-1RB) on preventing CKD-related fragility fractures and elucidate its pharmacological mechanisms.

Background & Aims: The accuracy of ultrasound for evaluation of individual colorectal segments in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has not been evaluated in a systematic review. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound in different colorectal segments of patients with IBD.
Methods: We searched publication databases from inception through March 2019 for studies that assessed the accuracy of ultrasound in detection of inflammation in right, transverse, and left colon and in rectum in patients with IBD, using findings from colonoscopy as the reference standard.

Background: Despite improvements in dialysis treatment, mortality rates remain high, especially among older hemodialysis patients. Quality of life (QOL) among hemodialysis patients is strongly associated with higher risk of death. This study aimed to describe the health-related QOL and its change in older maintenance hemodialysis patients and to demonstrate characteristics associated with health-related QOL.

Background: A model that can predict treatment response for a patient with specific baseline characteristics would help decision-making in personalized medicine. The aim of the study is to develop such a model in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who receive certolizumab (CTZ) plus methotrexate (MTX) therapy, using individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA).
Methods: We will search Cochrane CENTRAL, PubMed, and Scopus as well as clinical trial registries, drug regulatory agency reports, and the pharmaceutical company websites from their inception onwards to obtain randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating CTZ plus MTX compared with MTX alone in treating RA.
