Background: Evidence has firmly established the association between superior cardiovascular health (CVH) and reduced susceptibility to cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). In reality, CVH experiences dynamic fluctuations throughout individuals' lifespans. However, the association between changes in CVH and the impact on CMDs among individuals with different genetic risks remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates obesity prevalence among children in Hong Kong, focusing on primary and secondary school students, and aims to identify associated risk factors linked to sociodemographic and health-related behaviors.
  • - Data was gathered through self-administered surveys from nearly 5,000 students across 55 schools, revealing that obesity is more common in male students, particularly those with poor academic performance and unhealthy lifestyle habits, like high sugary drink consumption and low physical activity.
  • - Key findings suggest that male gender, inactivity, low self-esteem in academics, and poor dietary choices are significant risk factors for obesity, underlining the need for targeted interventions for at-risk youth and further research on effective solutions.

The infant gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes, yet the assembly of gut resistome in infants and its influencing factors remain largely unknown. We characterized resistome in 4132 metagenomes from 963 infants in six countries and 4285 resistance genes were observed. The inherent resistome pattern of healthy infants ( = 272) could be distinguished by two stages: a multicompound resistance phase (Months 0-7) and a tetracycline-mupirocin-β-lactam-dominant phase (Months 8-14).

The rapidly evolving landscape of biomarkers for colorectal cancer (CRC) necessitates an integrative, updated repository. In response, we constructed the Colorectal Cancer Biomarker Database (CBD), which collected and displayed the curated biomedicine information for 870 CRC biomarkers in the previous study. Building on CBD, we have now developed CBD2, which includes information on 1569 newly reported biomarkers derived from different biological sources (DNA, RNA, protein, and others) and clinical applications (diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between low thyroid function and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a term recently created to emphasize the role of cardiometabolic issues in liver disease.
  • 2901 participants were analyzed, divided into groups based on their thyroid function, and the researchers used statistical models to assess the likelihood of developing MASLD.
  • The findings revealed that individuals with low thyroid function had a significantly higher chance of developing MASLD, indicating a strong, independent relationship between the two conditions.

Institute for Hepatology, National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Disease, The Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen, The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: The purpose was to review relevant clinical data and formulate recommendations supporting the use of saline as a simple rinse for an early reassuring intervention to reduce the occurrence of re-positive COVID-19 patients.

Methods: We conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study, which enrolled patients with confirmed re-testing positive COVID-19 during 7-60 days after discharge from Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen. By one-to-two propensity score matching for age and sex, the control group of those not re-testing positive during the same period served as matched control.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how the COVID-19 pandemic and the use of non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) affected the rates of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza infections in pediatric patients in central China.
  • Researchers found that children hospitalized for these infections during the pandemic were older compared to those before it, with RSV cases seeing a decline in severe cases.
  • While influenza positivity rates decreased significantly during the pandemic, RSV infections actually increased, highlighting the need for better prevention strategies for childhood RSV.

Introduction: Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), or the calcium to magnesium (Ca:Mg) ratio may affect the risk of dementia via complex mechanisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of dietary Ca, Mg, and Ca:Mg ratio with dementia risk at the prospective phase of the Shanghai Aging Study.

Methods: We analyzed data from 1565 dementia-free participants living in an urban community who had measurements of dietary Ca and Mg intake derived from a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and incident dementia during follow-up.
