Purpose: Economic realities in lower-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) present an increased need for outcome measures for wheelchair efficacy, as these measures enable optimized use of funds. As the provision level of wheelchairs is low in these areas, and many wheelchairs are inappropriate for their intended users, use of funds based on evidence is especially necessary. The Wheelchair Satisfaction Questionnaire (WSQ) was designed to be a snapshot of a wheelchair user's level of satisfaction with their wheelchair.

September 2020

Faculty of Health, School of Psychology and Counseling, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (Hoviatdoost, Schweitzer); Department of Health, School of Applied Psychology, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia (Bandarian); private practice, Gold Coast, Queensland (Arthey).

Objective: Despite increasing evidence for the effectiveness of intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), evidence supporting the purported mechanisms of change in ISTDP is lacking. This systematized review aimed to describe the major theorized mechanisms of change in ISTDP, critically evaluate the emerging literature pertaining to its purported mechanisms, and explore directions for future research.

Methods: A systematized search of the literature was conducted by using online databases (PsychInfo, PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL).

Professor, Graduate School of Psychology and Counseling, Cambridge College, Boston, MA, USA; email:

Global mental health (GMH) work reminds us about our professional ideals and mission. GMH specialists conduct research and provide psychosocial and mental health support to populations affected by humanitarian crises around the world. This work exposes these specialists to situations with a high degree of moral ambiguity and no good solutions, where humanitarian accountability takes priority over conflicting values.

Unlabelled: Autism research studies have traditionally failed to represent the full diversity of the autism spectrum due to the lack of measures available for use with participants who prefer to express themselves visually. A multidimensional measure of emotions, which can include both picture- and text-based prompts, may improve accessibility of emotion rating measures and broaden participation in research and educational evaluations to include those who communicate in diverse ways. Picture-based measures designed to assess participants' emotions may be useful for research concerning autistic identity and service evaluation, two areas where representation of diverse perspectives is needed.

On the relationship of first-episode psychosis to the amphetamine-sensitized state: a dopamine D receptor agonist radioligand study.

Transl Psychiatry

January 2020

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Division of General Psychiatry, Medical University of Vienna, Währinger Gürtel 18-20, 1090, Vienna, Austria.

Schizophrenia is characterized by increased behavioral and neurochemical responses to dopamine-releasing drugs. This prompted the hypothesis of psychosis as a state of "endogenous" sensitization of the dopamine system although the exact basis of dopaminergic disturbances and the possible role of prefrontal cortical regulation have remained uncertain. To show that patients with first-episode psychosis release more dopamine upon amphetamine-stimulation than healthy volunteers, and to reveal for the first time that prospective sensitization induced by repeated amphetamine exposure increases dopamine-release in stimulant-naïve healthy volunteers to levels observed in patients, we collected data on amphetamine-induced dopamine release using the dopamine D receptor agonist radioligand [C]-(+)-PHNO and positron emission tomography.

Background: Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in brain of patients with suspected Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be assessed by positron emission tomography (PET) in vivo. While visual classification prevails in the clinical routine, semiquantitative PET analyses may enable more reliable evaluation of cases with a visually uncertain, borderline Aβ accumulation.

Objective: We evaluated different analysis approaches (visual/semiquantitative) to find the most accurate and sensitive interpretation of Aβ-PET for predicting risk of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD.

Neuropsychological literature has demonstrated a significant relationship between cognitive decline and functional capacity, but the directionality of this relationship is still not well understood. Further, the construct of practical judgment has been linked to both cognitive impairment and functional capacity, but these associations are still under-researched. Moreover, few studies to date have examined the relationships among all three constructs utilizing performance-based, ecologically valid and psychometrically sound measures.

Research suggests that mood can moderate age differences in recognizing facial emotion. In this study, we examined how an anxious versus calm mood state affected younger and older adults' processing of emotional faces. Older adults had greater difficulty identifying negative emotions, particularly when emotions were displayed at a low intensity level.

In this study we examined health communication anxiety (HCA) associated with language-discordant situations - that is, where people have to use their second language (L2) to communicate with health providers who are using their first language (L1). We adapted existing HCA scales in order to (1) assess L2 HCA in such situations separately for physical and mental/emotional health contexts and (2) control for potential confounds, such as HCA not related to L2 use and L2 communication anxiety not related to health, allowing us to obtain measures of HCA. We examined the relationship between L2-specific HCA and willingness to use health services in language-discordant situations.

Purpose: Because outcomes studies are known to facilitate effective use of funds, economic realities in lower-resource countries increase the need for outcome measures for wheelchair effectiveness in these areas. Effective use of funds based on evidence is especially needed since the level of wheelchair provision is low, and many wheelchairs are inappropriate for their intended users. There are very few existing wheelchair specific assistive technology outcome measures.

In early childhood, the family dietary and activity environment and parent food-related practices have been found to be important predictors of children's weight. However, few studies account for both of these factors, or the interaction between the 2, when assessing BMI in early childhood. This study aims to examine the association between the family-based dietary and activity environment (including intake, physical activity, and structure) and children's BMI z-scores in the context of parent food-related behaviors in low-income families during the preschool years.

Military Mental Health Personnel Deployment Survey: A Secondary Analysis.

Mil Med

March 2020

Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership, United States Air Force Academy, 2354 Fairchild Drive, 6L-147, United States Air Force Academy, CO 80840.

Introduction: Military mental health personnel (MMHP) have increasingly engaged in deployment-related roles in closer proximity to combat environments. Although studies examining deployment-related outcomes among military health care personnel have found combat exposure (CE) positively related to psychological problems, no studies of MMHP have investigated CE or its association with psychological outcomes. This study seeks to provide descriptive data on CE and perceived impacts associated with deployment, as well as explore how CE, perceptions of preparedness for deployment, difficulties during deployment (DDD), and meaningful work during deployment relate to appraisal of problems after deployment (ie, sleep problems, interpersonal withdrawal, depressive symptoms, and work problems).

The risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following trauma is heritable, but robust common variants have yet to be identified. In a multi-ethnic cohort including over 30,000 PTSD cases and 170,000 controls we conduct a genome-wide association study of PTSD. We demonstrate SNP-based heritability estimates of 5-20%, varying by sex.

In order to understand the relationship between neuronal organization and behavior, precise methods that identify and quantify functional cellular ensembles are required. This is especially true in the quest to understand the mechanisms of memory. Brain structures involved in memory formation and storage, as well as the molecular determinates of memory are well-known, however, the microanatomy of functional neuronal networks remain largely unidentified.

Geographical disparity in colorectal cancer (CRC) survival rates may be partly due to aging populations and disadvantage in more remote locations; factors that also impact the incidence and outcomes of other chronic health conditions. The current study investigates whether geographic disparity exists amongst previously diagnosed health conditions in CRC patients above and beyond age and area-level disadvantage and whether this disparity is linked to geographic disparity in CRC survival. Data regarding previously diagnosed health conditions were collected via computer-assisted telephone interviews with a cross-sectional sample of = 1,966 Australian CRC patients between 2003 and 2004.

Background: Gene expression can be influenced by DNA methylation 1) distally, at regulatory elements such as enhancers, as well as 2) proximally, at promoters. Our current understanding of the influence of distal DNA methylation changes on gene expression patterns is incomplete. Here, we characterize genome-wide methylation and expression patterns for ~ 13 k genes to explore how DNA methylation interacts with gene expression, throughout the genome.

Neighborhood Effects on PND Symptom Severity for Women Enrolled in a Home Visiting Program.

Community Ment Health J

May 2018

Department of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH, USA.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between postnatal depression (PND) symptoms severity and structural neighborhood characteristics among women enrolled in a home visiting program. The sample included 295 mothers who were at risk for developing PND, observed as 3-month Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores ≥ 10. Two neighborhood predictor components (residential stability and social disadvantage) were analyzed as predictors of PND symptom severity using a generalized estimating equation.
