Background: The mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA) and auxin (IAA) in inducing adventitious root (AR) formation, biomass accumulation, and plant development under long-term waterlogging (LT-WL) conditions are largely unexplored. This study aimed to determine the roles of exogenous application of ABA and IAA in two woody plants (Cleistocalyx operculatus and Syzygium jambos) under LT-WL conditions. A pot experiment was conducted using a complete randomized design with two factors: (i) LT-WL and (ii) application of exogenous phytohormones (ABA and IAA) for 120 d.

The Asian corn borer moth is an important lepidopteran pest of maize in Asia. Odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs), including carboxylesterases (CCEs), glutathione -transferases (GSTs), cytochrome P450s (CYPs), UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs), and aldehyde oxidases (AOXs), are responsible for rapid inactivation of odorant signals in the insect antennae. In this study, we performed a transcriptome assembly for the antennae of to identify putative ODE genes.

Background: The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda is the main destructive pest of grain crops, and has led to substantial economic losses worldwide. Chemical pesticides are the most effective way to manage FAW. Here, a laboratory test using an artificial diet-incorporated assay was conducted to determine the toxicity of five insecticides and the joint effect of the binary combination insecticides to FAW larvae.

Although environmental factors affecting adventitious root (AR) formation have been examined, how nutrient status affects ARs under waterlogging conditions remains unclear. In this study, plants' performance in responding to AR regulation based on nutrient supply was investigated in terms of plant morphology, physiology and AR traits. Results indicated that Cleistocalyx operculatus possesses higher waterlogging tolerance than Syzygium cumini according to the waterlogging tolerance coefficient, mainly because of the higher fresh weight, porosity and length of AR in C.

Furanocoumarins, the secondary metabolites of plants, are considered to be natural insecticides and fungicides because they prevent the invasion of plant pathogenic microorganisms and the predation of herbivorous insects. In this study, novel 2-arylfuranocoumarin derivatives were designed to synthesize by condensation, esterification, bromination, and Wittig reaction. The results showed an excellent photosensitive activity of 2-thiophenylfuranocoumarin (I34).

Key Laboratory of Soybean Disease and Pest Control (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), Key Laboratory of Plant Immunity, College of Life Sciences, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, 210095, China.

AVRPPHB SUSCEPTIBLE 3 (PBS3) belongs to the GH3 family of acyl acid amido synthetases, which conjugates amino acids to diverse acyl acid substrates. Recent studies demonstrate that PBS3 in Arabidopsis plays a key role in the biosynthesis of plant defense hormone salicylic acid (SA) by catalyzing the conjugation of glutamate to isochorismate to form isochorismate-9-glutamate, which is then used to produce SA through spontaneous decay or ENHANCED PSEUDOMONAS SUSCEPTIBILITY (EPS1) catalysis. Consistent with its function as an essential enzyme for SA biosynthesis, PBS3 is well known to be a positive regulator of plant immunity in Arabidopsis.

Background: Shortawn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol.), a competitive grass weed severely infesting overwintering crops worldwide, has evolved resistance to the highly efficient acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide fenoxaprop-P-ethyl. The Ile-to-Asn substitution at codon position 2041 of ACCase is a dominant resistance mutation that has been associated with fenoxaprop-P-ethyl resistance in A.

Background: Aberrant aggregation of α-synuclein (α-syn) is a key pathological feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the precise role of intestinal α-syn in the progression of PD is unclear. In a number of genetic Drosophila models of PD, α-syn was frequently ectopically expressed in the neural system to investigate the pathobiology.

Method: We investigated the potential role of intestinal α-syn in PD pathogenesis using a Drosophila model.

Efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes is of key importance in photocatalysis. Tuning the charge separation pathway is significant but still suffering from low efficiency for the charge extraction from semiconductors. Herein, taking 2D g-C N (CN) nanosheets as a model photocatalyst, it was found the decoration of homophase junction between brookite TiO rods and nanoparticles (B -B ) onto CN can effectively modulate photogenerated charge extraction and transfer in B -B /CN composites.

There are four dsRNAs segments present in the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum strain RCEF0766. The genomic segments dsRNA1 and dsRNA3 are of a novel virus, "Metarhizium brunneum bipartite mycovirus 1" (MbBV1), while dsRNA2 and dsRNA4 are the components of the Metarhizium brunneum partitivirus 2 (MbPV2), a member in genus Gammapartitivirus of the family Partitiviridae based on molecular analysis and RT-PCR. This suggests that the strain RCEF0766 was co-infected by two different mycoviruses.

December 2022

Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Integrated Pest Management on Crops, Department of Entomology, School of Plant Protection, Anhui Agricultural University, Hefei, China.

Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is an insecticide widely used to control the small white butterfly (SWB), Pieris rapae. Exposure to CAP can cause oxidative injury in SWB; however, it is unclear if antioxidant enzymes are involved in the defense process. In this study, a thioredoxin peroxidase (PrTPX1) gene was identified from SWB by using a homology search method.
