Background And Aims: Previous studies describe the occurrence of unacceptable behaviors reported by students pursuing health professional education in Aotearoa, New Zealand and across the globe. These include, but are not limited to, experiences of verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and discrimination based on race/ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, and sexual orientation. University of Otago teaching staff across the various health professional programs often receive anecdotal reports of these phenomena from their clinical students.

Subtherapeutic levels of lamotrigine and levetiracetam are more likely to occur during pregnancy owing to the effect of pregnancy on their pharmacokinetics. This can lead to suboptimal control of epilepsy, and guidelines recommend proactive dose adjustment in the second and third trimesters alongside therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). This retrospective cohort study using administrative databases aimed to investigate whether prescribers adjust the dose of lamotrigine or levetiracetam during and after pregnancy and whether TDM is used to manage dose adjustment.

In an attempt to discover a new synthetic vaccine adjuvant, the glycosylation of hederagenin, gypsogenin, and oleanolic acid acceptors with di- and trisaccharide donors to generate a range of mimics of natural product QS-21 was carried out. The saponins were formulated with phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol, and the structures analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. 3-O-(Manp(1→3)Glcp)hederagenin was found to produce numerous ring-like micelles when formulated, while C-28 choline ester derivatives preferred self-assembly and did not interact with the liposomes.

This work demonstrated the effect of two salts as potential simple formulation excipients in modifying hydration properties, phase behavior, and protein release from lecithin-based implants. In vitro release of a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), from cylindrical-shaped lecithin and lecithin:cholesterol (1:1 w/w) implants containing 0, 10, or 30% w/w NaCl or CaCl2 was studied. In the absence of salts, BSA was released from lecithin and lecithin:cholesterol implants with a high monomer content and the release profiles were similar to those previously reported.

A protein (bovine serum albumin: BSA) and a peptide (luteinizing hormone releasing hormone: LHRH) were used to evaluate proteolytic activity in the intestine of common brushtail possums (Marsupiala, Trichosurus vulpecula). Luminal and mucosal extracts were isolated from the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, proximal colon and distal colon, their protein content assessed and specific activities in metabolising LHRH and BSA determined in vitro. The degradation of LHRH by luminal extracts was compared with that by the pancreatic enzymes, chymotrypsin, trypsin, and elastase.
