From the Department of Population Health Sciences, Geisinger, Danville, PA (MNP); Section of Addiction Medicine, Tower Health System, Reading, PA (WS); Vital Strategies, New York, NY (RS); Pennsylvania Department of Health, Harrisburg, PA (RS); Department of Addiction Services, WellSpan Health, York, PA (CH); The Wright Centers for Community Health and Graduate Medical Education, Scranton, PA (MR); AT Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, Mesa, AZ (MR); Department of Family Medicine, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Allentown, PA (AC); and Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida, North Tampa, FL (AC).

Introduction: Temporary policy changes during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic facilitated rapid expansion of medication for opioid use disorder via telemedicine (tele-MOUD). Evidence for tele-MOUD best practices and its impact on treatment engagement and retention remains limited. This quality improvement initiative compared tele-MOUD implementation among Pennsylvania medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) programs, evaluated sociodemographic characteristics of patients using tele-MOUD, and described trends in tele-MOUD use and patient engagement and retention.

Objective: To estimate scale scores for patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures that classify patients as improved or unimproved at days 3 and 10 post-concussion.

Methods: Data from 187 adolescent patients who sustained a concussion (150 males, 32 females, 5 not reported) were analyzed. Patients completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (MFS), Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), and Global Rating of Change (GROC) on days 3 and 10 post-concussion.

Recently, there has been an emphasis on collecting large datasets in the field of sports medicine. While there have been great advances in areas of sport performance and sport epidemiology, there have been fewer efforts dedicated to understanding the effectiveness and impact of athletic healthcare, including injury prevention programs and rehabilitation interventions provided at the point-of-care. In 2009, the Athletic Training Practice-Based Research Network (AT-PBRN) was launched to address this need, with the mission of improving the quality of care provided by athletic trainers.

Negotiation Practices of Athletic Trainers Employed in the Clinical Setting.

J Athl Train

August 2022

Associate Professor, Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences & School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, A.T. Still University.

Context: Athletic trainers (ATs) are comparatively underpaid relative to peer healthcare professionals. While many factors contribute to salary and benefits of a given employment position, negotiation is a factor of the final salary and benefits package that is achieved. It is unclear to what extent ATs negotiate salary or other terms of employment during the hiring process.

The need for efficacious and non-toxic cancer therapies is paramount. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are showing great promise and are introducing new possibilities in cancer treatment with their ability to selectively infect tumor cells and trigger antitumor immune responses. Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) is a commonly selected OV candidate due to its large genome, relative safety profile, and ability to infect a variety of cell types.

Article Synopsis
  • Ankle sprains are common in sports and can lead to long-term functional deficits, but this study focuses on the short-term functional recovery within the first two weeks post-injury.
  • A study of 88 patients revealed statistically significant improvements in self-reported function using the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) during the two-week period, with high percentages of patients exceeding the minimal clinically important difference in both daily living and sports activities.
  • Despite these improvements, a notable portion of patients still reported significant functional limitations in sports by the end of the two weeks, indicating ongoing recovery challenges even after initial progress.

Background: Lactation has long term effects on maternal health, but the relationship between lactation and long-term handgrip strength, a marker of musculoskeletal function and healthy aging, has not been explored.

Objective: Examine the relationship between total lifetime breastfeeding duration (BFD) and midlife handgrip strength.

Methods: We measured handgrip strength as a marker of overall strength among 631 women in the Project Viva cohort.

MedEdPORTAL

May 2022

Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology, and Director, Stanford Medicine Abilities Coalition (SMAC), Stanford University School of Medicine.

Introduction: Patients with disabilities face health disparities, and providers with disabilities confront professional roadblocks and institutional bias. Yet their experiences are often excluded from medical education, and few case studies address culturally humble care for those with disabilities.

Methods: We created two 1-hour case-based modules on disability and ableism from patient and provider perspectives.

Introduction The Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA) is a three-part series of examinations similar to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) that osteopathic medical students must pass for medical licensure. Osteopathic students are not required to take the USMLE, but during the residency admission process, many emergency medicine (EM) residency programs will not consider osteopathic applicants who only take the COMLEX-USA. Therefore, we examined program-level characteristics between programs that accept the COMLEX-USA alone for osteopathic applicants and those that prefer the USMLE using free, publicly available online databases and residency program websites.

Context: To enhance the quality of patient care, athletic training students (ATSs) should experience a wide variety of clinical practice settings, interact with diverse patient populations, and engage with patients who have a wide variety of conditions. It is unclear in what ways, if any, ATSs have diverse opportunities during clinical experiences.

Objective: To describe the characteristics of patient encounters (PEs) ATSs engaged in during clinical experiences.

Somatization, defined as the presence of multiple somatic symptoms, frequently occurs in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and may constitute the clinical manifestation of a neurobiological sensitization process. Brain imaging data was acquired with T1 weighted 3 tesla MRI, and gray matter morphometry were analyzed using FreeSurfer. We investigated differences in networks of structural covariance, based on graph analysis, between regional gray matter volumes in IBS-related brain regions between IBS patients with high and low somatization levels, and compared them to healthy controls (HCs).

Context: The effective use of electronic records (ie, electronic health records or electronic medical records) is essential to professional initiatives and the overall advancement of the athletic training profession. However, evidence suggests that comprehensive patient care documentation and widespread use of electronic records are still limited in athletic training. The lack of formal training and education for clinicians and students is often cited as a primary barrier to electronic record use.

To explore shape variability among crocodylian skull tables, an analysis using geometric morphometric methods is conducted with the inclusion of extant and fossil taxa. Skull tables are variable and the differences likely play a role in hydrodynamics, species recognition, and biomechanical adaptations. Comparisons of allometric change within taxa are explored revealing that adults significantly diverge from juvenile skull table morphologies in most species and these changes happen in a stereotyped way.
