Viewing distance and character size in the use of smartphones across the lifespan.

PLoS One

April 2023

Department of Physics and Astronomy, School of Optics and Optometry, University of Florence, Sesto Fiorentino (FI), Italy.

The use of smartphones has seen an extraordinary growth in recent years, thus the understanding of visual habits associated with the use of such devices across the lifespan is becoming important. In the present study we measured viewing distance and character size in a group of non-presbyopes (n = 157) and a group of presbyopes (n = 60) while participants read a simple text message on their smartphone. Results showed that non-presbyopes use shorter viewing distances as compared to presbyopes, a behavior causing a significantly higher accommodative demand.

Strabismus is not a condition in itself but the consequence of an underlying problem. Eye misalignment can be caused by disease, injury, and/or abnormalities in any of the structures and processes involved in visual perception and oculomotor control, from the extraocular muscles and their innervations to the oculomotor and visual processing areas in the brain. A small percentage of all strabismus cases are the consequence of well-described genetic syndromes, acquired insult, or disease affecting the extraocular muscles (EOMs) or their innervations.

Electronic sports (e-sports) have recently emerged to become a rapidly growing form of videogame competition, requiring gamers to spend many hours in front of a visual display. The nature of this new modality raises important considerations for ocular health, and visual and perceptual functioning, compared to traditional sports. In general, sports performance has been associated with open spaces, gross motor movement, and balance, while electronic sports require visual and attentional stamina at near distances with fine motor control.

Article Synopsis
  • Tregs are special immune cells that help keep our bodies balanced and fight off diseases, and cannabinoids (like those found in marijuana) could help make these cells work better.
  • Dendritic cells (DCs) in our immune system have special receptors for cannabinoids, but how these cannabinoids affect DCs is still not fully understood.
  • This study shows that cannabinoids can help create a kind of DCs that promote Tregs, which could lead to new treatments for different diseases where the immune system goes a bit out of control.
