Aim: We aimed to examine the mediating effects of the Sense of Coherence (SOC) on the relationship between stress and sleep in nurses during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey targeting nurses in Chiba and Tokyo during the summer of 2021 was conducted using Google Forms. Responses were obtained using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the 13-item version of the SOC scale (SOC-13), and questions regarding COVID-19-related stress.

Article Synopsis
  • Fertility preservation and reproductive treatments in Japan involve significant out-of-pocket expenses for adolescents and young adults, with current healthcare policies lacking in insurance coverage for these services.
  • Patients can apply for government subsidies under specific conditions, but the costs and amounts paid vary by facility.
  • A study conducted with 186 fertility preservation facilities revealed that about one-third of the expenses are shouldered by patients, highlighting the need for improved pricing and insurance options to ensure ongoing access to care.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), as a neurological intervention for degenerative cerebellar ataxia (DCA) based on preregistration (PROSPERO: CRD42023379192).

Objective: We aimed to explore clinical outcomes and examine the parameters associated with NIBS efficacy in DCA patients.

Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, CHINAL, and PEDro databases were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Background: Emotional labor is an essential component of nursing practice and is important for Generation Z nursing students born from the mid-1990s to early 2010s. They will become the backbone of the nursing workforce but present more emotional regulation problems. Studies on emotional labor are limited to clinical nurses and influencing factors at the individual level.

  • Neuropathic pain (NP) is linked to glial cells, but the exact role of oligodendrocytes in NP alongside microglia and astrocytes is not well understood.
  • Using a mouse model, researchers examined changes in NP and myelin after a chronic injury, analyzing glial cell interactions through single-cell sequencing.
  • Findings indicated that during NP development, oligodendrocytes were less effective in myelin production due to their differentiation being impacted by other glial cells, highlighting significant interactions that may contribute to demyelination.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of being a spousal caregiver on the health of older adults, particularly focusing on frailty over a 12-year period.
  • Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, it found that spousal caregivers experience a significant increase in frailty compared to non-caregivers.
  • The findings suggest the need for healthcare providers to offer targeted support services to help caregivers cope with the associated challenges and promote healthier aging.

Microglial PCGF1 alleviates neuroinflammation associated depressive behavior in adolescent mice.

Mol Psychiatry

August 2024

Key Laboratory for Experimental Teratology of Ministry of Education, Shandong Key Laboratory of Mental Disorders, Department of Anatomy and Histoembryology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, China.

Epigenetics plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression during adolescent brain maturation. In adolescents with depression, microglia-mediated chronic neuroinflammation may contribute to the activation of cellular signaling cascades and cause central synapse loss. However, the exact mechanisms underlying the epigenetic regulation of neuroinflammation leading to adolescent depression remain unclear.

Unlabelled: Moral sensitivity, missed nursing care and moral distress among healthcare professionals have received considerable attention in recent years. These factors represent important healthcare challenges for new nurses (graduation to 2 years of work experience). However, studies on the relationships among these variables in the context of new nurses in China remain lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondria play a crucial role in energy production and regulating processes like oxidative stress and cell death; mtDNA is vital for their function, leading to interest in its link to mental disorders.
  • This study used genetic data from large biobanks to analyze whether changes in mtDNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) are causally related to mental disorders, including ASD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, using advanced statistical methods.
  • The findings showed a significant decrease in autism risk linked to higher mtDNA-CN levels, with no causal connections found for other mental disorders, suggesting mtDNA-CN could be a useful early screening marker for autism spectrum disorder.

Aims: Left atrial (LA) volume index (LAVI) in chronic heart failure (HF) predicts cardiovascular outcomes. However, the association between LAVI reduction during acute decompensated HF (ADHF) and its prognostic potential is limited. We hypothesized that LA reverse remodelling (LARR) after ADHF therapy would be associated with better clinical outcomes.

Background: Individuals diagnosed with hemifacial spasm (HFS) frequently undergo noticeable alterations in their facial appearance. Such changes can detrimentally influence both their physical and psychological well-being. While prior studies have identified self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) as key elements in social anxiety, their role in studies concerning body image and its correlation with social anxiety has been seldom explored.

This study was aimed to examine the moderated mediating effects of exercise self-efficacy and fear of movement on the relationship between fatigue and quality of life in patients with heart failure. A total of 305 patients with heart failure were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The results showed that fear of movement significantly mediated the relationship between fatigue and quality of life, indicating that relieving fear of movement may be beneficial to improve quality of life.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a complication of diabetes that affects circulating drug concentrations and elimination of drugs from the body. Multiple drugs may be prescribed for treatment of diabetes and co-morbidities, and CKD complicates the pharmacotherapy selection and dosing regimen. Characterizing variations in renal drug clearance using models requires large clinical datasets that are costly and time-consuming to collect.

Fourteen Speech and Language Therapists/Pathologists (SLT/Ps) from 13 countries across 5 continents made up the International Confederation of Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies (ICCPCA) CLEFT 2022 Speech Taskforce. Following a group consensus activity led by an external facilitator using Lightning Design Thinking principles, "task-shifting" was identified as the topic for this Taskforce. Absence and scarcity of SLT/Ps in many parts of the world have led to non-SLT/Ps delivering speech and language therapy services to individuals with cleft lip +/- palate.

Leucine is a branched-chain amino acid that is present in protein, and it is an essential factor in activating the mechanistic target of the rapamycin complex 1 signaling pathway and increasing muscle protein synthesis. However, the loss of digestive function after total gastrectomy leads to impaired protein absorption, potentially failing to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether muscle protein synthesis is enhanced by oral skim milk administration after total gastrectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • Homolateral Imitative Synkinesis (HIS) is a rare movement disorder seen in stroke patients, characterized by involuntary, coordinated movements between the same side's upper and lower limbs.
  • The study involved 1328 stroke patients, revealing that HIS occurred in only 13 patients (0.9%), with mild motor paralysis and varying sensory impairments present in those affected.
  • HIS was primarily observed during walking, where some patients faced challenges that could lead to falls and described the involuntary arm movements as detrimental to their gait.
