Cell-to-cell communications are desirable for efficient functioning in endocrine cells. Gap junctions and paracrine factors are major mechanisms by which neighboring endocrine cells communicate with each other. The current experiment was undertaken to morphologically examine gap junction expression and developmental changes in rat adrenal medullary chromaffin (AMC) cells.

Adaptability to return to work is a process by which cancer survivors(CSs) utilize accessible resources to reconstruct themselves. While the stigma, financial situation and social support are known to influence their adaptability to return to work, the mechanisms by which these factors work remain unclear. This study proposes a moderated mediation model to signify a pathway linking stigma to the adaptability to return to work.

Background: Many patients who get discharged from the intensive care unit experience physical dysfunction that persists even after discharge. Physical dysfunction is associated with skeletal muscle atrophy and accompanying intensive care unit-acquired weakness in the early stages of intensive care unit admission, and early diagnosis and prevention with early mobilization are crucial. However, the amount of physical activity required for early mobilization remains controversial in critically ill patients.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a principal factor in neurological disorders, often resulting in significant morbidity due to secondary neuroinflammatory and oxidative stress responses. While circular RNAs are recognized for their high expression levels in the nervous system and play crucial roles in various neurological processes, their specific contributions to the pathophysiology of TBI remain underexplored. In this study, the possible molecular mechanisms through which circMETTL9 modulated oxidative stress and neurological outcomes following TBI were investigated.

Environmental heavy metal contamination, combined with inappropriate use of fungicides, has led to the co-existence of lead (Pb) and iprodione (IPR), presenting signification risks to ecosystems and human health. The toxic effects resulting from concurrent exposure to Pb and IPR, however, remain poorly understood. In the study, we conducted a comprehensive 60-day subchronic study to investigate the toxic effects on the liver and gut in parental male zebrafish through employing multi-omics analyses.

Background: Fluoxetine is widely used as a first-line antidepressant. However, the molecular mechanisms for its antidepressant effects are still not fully understood. Hyperactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a core pathogenic mechanism contributing to depression, and fluoxetine treatment prevents this dysfunction.

The effect and mechanism of IL-37d on neutrophil recruitment in the early stage of tumor metastasis in the lungs.

Discov Oncol

November 2024

Institute of Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, Shandong, China.

Background: Chronic inflammation plays a pivotal role in cancer progression, with tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) actively shaping the pre-metastatic niche. Interleukin-37 (IL-37), a known immunosuppressive cytokine, is implicated in this regulation, although its precise function remains underexplored. Therefore, this study seeks to further elucidate the inhibitory effect of IL-37d on neutrophil recruitment within the pre-metastatic lung microenvironment and its underlying mechanisms, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for clinical interventions in the early stages of cancer progression.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and prepregnancy obesity independently increase the risk of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in children, but their combined effects are largely unexplored.
  • A study analyzing data from over 650,000 children in Finland found that combining chronic hypertension with obesity notably heightens the risk of various mental health issues, including mood disorders and autism spectrum disorders, by up to 3.5 times.
  • Moreover, the research indicates that the combined risk of HDP subtypes and high prepregnancy BMI is greater than the risks from each factor alone, suggesting that maternal health plays a crucial role in children's mental health outcomes.
