Purpose: Since 1990, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) has offered free cervical cancer screening to low-income, uninsured patients, increasing single time point screening and early detection rates. Little is known about NBCCEDP's longitudinal effectiveness. The objective of this study was to assess utilization of Kansas's NBCCEDP, early detection works (EDW) for one-time versus serial screening and compare rates of cervical dysplasia between groups.

Background: The race-based traumatic stress model proposes that discrimination elicits trauma-related symptoms. Cumulative discriminatory experiences and subsequent trauma symptoms may lead to prenatal inflammation, with far reaching consequences for the health of a mother and her child.
Methods: Latina mothers, primarily of Mexican and Central American heritage ( = 150), completed the Everyday Discrimination Scale and the Traumatic Avoidance subscale of the Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms-II during pregnancy (24-32 weeks).

Loneliness has reached epidemic proportions, affecting nearly one-in-two adults in the United States and is particularly potent in sexually minoritized men (SMM). Individual differences in optimism and pessimism may exert protective or maladaptive effects for the impact of discrimination on loneliness. This study investigated interrelationships between optimism/pessimism, discrimination, and loneliness within a sample of sexual minoritized men (SMM).

Labor after cesarean (LAC) is a safe alternative for pregnant persons who have had 1 or 2 previous cesarean births (CBs) and have no contraindication to vaginal birth. When compared with repeat CB, vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) reduces short- and long-term health complications and morbidity and should therefore be presented as an option. Despite recommendations from the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in support of LAC, not all pregnant persons who are candidates have access to this option.

Ocular point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has emerged as a pivotal tool in evaluating ocular emergencies in the emergency department (ED), addressing millions of annual visits for eye complaints in the United States. Compared to traditional imaging methods, ocular POCUS's advantages include efficiency, repeatability, and safety. Adequate patient preparation, positioning, and transducer selection are essential for obtaining high-quality images.

Pregnancy-associated spontaneous coronary artery dissection (P-SCAD) poses a rare yet critical concern among postpartum individuals, increasingly recognized as a significant trigger for acute myocardial infarction. Timely identification, accurate diagnosis, and prompt treatment are paramount for clinicians confronted with this condition. Patients with P-SCAD commonly manifest signs and symptoms akin to acute coronary syndrome but have different etiology and treatment.

Introduction: South Asian adults are at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, for which coronary artery calcification is an early predictor. Adherence to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet is a modifiable risk factor that may mitigate the progression of coronary artery calcification and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Methods: Using data from the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America cohort, the authors calculated a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension dietary score (categorized as low, moderate, and high) to examine the associations of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet adherence with coronary artery calcification after a 5-year follow up.

Background: Effective hospital discharge planning is crucial, particularly in educating caregivers on handling medical devices. This education helps manage the patient's signs and symptoms, prevents post-discharge complications, and reduces early readmissions. This study aimed to understand aspects involved in the acquisition of mastery by home caregivers, in handling care of a patient who just underwent gastrostomy, after educational intervention during hospitalization and telemonitoring upon return home.

Limited pediatric primary care clinical placement sites and preceptors have made it difficult for family nurse practitioner (FNP) students to meet pediatric preventive clinical competencies. The purpose of this project was to evaluate a faculty-led clinical model to meet pediatric preventive care competencies through a pediatric mobile clinic. A pre-post evaluation design was used to evaluate student perceptions of their achievement of competencies.

Population-level efforts are needed to increase levels of physical activity and healthy eating to reduce and manage chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. Interventions to increase public transit use may be one promising strategy, particularly for low-income communities or populations of color who are disproportionately burdened by health disparities and transportation barriers. This study employs a natural experiment design to evaluate the impacts of a citywide zero-fare transit policy in Kansas City, Missouri, on ridership and health indicators.

Background: The bleeding risk of individuals taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) concomitantly with oral anticoagulants (OACs) compared to OACs alone remains controversial. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the bleeding risk of concomitant use of OACs and NSAIDs, and to make comparisons between different OACs types.
Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched systematically until 11 August 2023 for studies reporting the bleeding risk of combined use of OACs and NSAIDs.

Background: Within long-term care facilities, paraprofessional nursing assistants account for the largest proportion of the health care workforce and provide essential direct care to older people with complex care needs. There is a gap in developing a theory-driven, systematic synthesis of the job characteristics and well-being outcomes specific to this occupational group, as most existing studies evaluate either professional health care workers or both professional and nursing assistants.
Aim: Develop an occupation-specific conceptual model on the job characteristics and well-being of nursing assistants in long-term care facilities drawing upon the job demands-resources model.

Background: Neonatal septic shock represents a critical and life-threatening condition that necessitates immediate and personalized interventions. Prior research endeavors have been undertaken to inform the optimization of neonatal septic shock management, yet substantial heterogeneity prevails in the selection, measurement, and reporting of outcomes across relevant studies. The heterogeneity in outcome selections and measures impedes the comparability of results and the synthesis of evidence, thus contributing to suboptimal utilization of research findings.
