Hypothesis: The addition of water to a non-ionic N-oxide deep eutectic solvent(DES) composed of phenylacetic acid (PhAA) and N-dodecylmorpholine-N-oxide(MO-12) in a 1:1 M ratio(PhAA/MO-12) will promote interfacial nanostructure formation due to increased proton transfer and solvophobic interactions, leading to reduced friction.

Experiments: The interfacial structure and friction of PhAA/MO-12 with water content up to 41.9 wt% were investigated at mica surfaces.

We present lung virome data recovered through shotgun metagenomics in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from an infant with cystic fibrosis, who tested positive for infection. Using a bioinformatic pipeline for virus characterization in shotgun metagenomic data, we identified five viral contigs representing Pseudomonas phages classified as Caudoviricetes.

Diffusion coefficients often vary across regions, such as cellular membranes, and quantifying their variation can provide valuable insight into local membrane properties such as composition and stiffness. Toward quantifying diffusion coefficient spatial maps and uncertainties from particle tracks, we develop a Bayesian framework (DiffMAP-GP) by placing Gaussian Process (GP) priors on the family of candidate maps. For sake of computational efficiency, we leverage inducing point methods on GPs arising from the mathematical structure of the data giving rise to non-conjugate likelihood-prior pairs.

Structural plasticity of the coiled-coil interactions in human SFPQ.

The proteins SFPQ (splicing Factor Proline/Glutamine rich) and NONO (non-POU domain-containing octamer-binding protein) are mammalian members of the Drosophila Behaviour/Human Splicing (DBHS) protein family, which share 76% sequence identity in their conserved 320 amino acid DBHS domain. SFPQ and NONO are involved in all steps of post-transcriptional regulation and are primarily located in mammalian paraspeckles: liquid phase-separated, ribonucleoprotein sub-nuclear bodies templated by NEAT1 long non-coding RNA. A combination of structured and low-complexity regions provide polyvalent interaction interfaces that facilitate homo- and heterodimerisation, polymerisation, interactions with oligonucleotides, mRNA, long non-coding RNA, and liquid phase-separation, all of which have been implicated in cellular homeostasis and neurological diseases including neuroblastoma.

Background And Aims: To better understand C4 evolution in monocots, we characterized C3-C4 intermediate phenotypes in the grass genus Homolepis (subtribe Arthropogoninae).

Methods: Carbon isotope ratio (δ13C), leaf gas exchange, mesophyll (M) to bundle sheath (BS) tissue characteristics, organelle size and numbers in M and BS tissue, and tissue distribution of the P-subunit of glycine decarboxylase (GLDP) were determined for five Homolepis species and the C4 grass Mesosetum loliiforme from a phylogenetic sister clade. We generated a transcriptome-based phylogeny for Homolepis and Mesosetum species to interpret physiological and anatomical patterns in an evolutionary context, and to test for hybridization.

The present work presents the thermoelectric and electrical properties of the Ba(ZrHfSnTiFe)O and Ba(ZrHfSnTiCoCeBiFeYZn)O multicomponent perovskites.   • The study investigates the rejuvenation of vapor-deposited methyl-m-toluate glasses after 6 hours of annealing at a temperature close to their glass transition temperature (Tg), finding moderate glasses show rejuvenation, while highly stable glasses do not show expected changes.
  • Surprisingly, annealing lead to increased storage component of dielectric susceptibility in stable glasses without increases in the loss component, indicating short-term rejuvenation affects high-frequency relaxation processes; simulations showed no rejuvenation in similarly stable glasses within the same time frame.

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks are a fundamental resource for modeling cellular and molecular function, and a large and sophisticated toolbox has been developed to leverage their structure and topological organization to predict the functional roles of under-studied genes, proteins, and pathways. However, the overwhelming majority of experimentally-determined interactions from which such networks are constructed come from a small number of well-studied model organisms. Indeed, most species lack even a single experimentally-determined interaction in these databases, much less a network to enable the analysis of cellular function, and methods for computational PPI prediction are too noisy to apply directly.

Accounting for the impact of genotype and environment on variation in leaf respiration of wheat in Mexico and Australia.

An approach to improving radiation use efficiency (RUE) in wheat is to screen for variability in rates of leaf respiration in darkness (Rdark). We used a high-throughput system to quantify variation in Rdark among a diverse range of spring wheat genotypes (301 lines) grown in two countries (Mexico and Australia) and two seasons (2017 and 2018), and in doing so quantify the relative importance of genotype (G) and environment (E) in influencing variations in leaf Rdark. Through careful design, residual (unexplained) variation represented less than 10% of the total observed.

Selenocysteine (Sec) metabolism is crucial for cellular function and ferroptosis prevention and begins with the uptake of the Sec carrier, selenoprotein P (SELENOP). Following uptake, Sec released from SELENOP is metabolized via selenocysteine lyase (SCLY), producing selenide, a substrate for selenophosphate synthetase 2 (SEPHS2), which provides the essential selenium donor, selenophosphate (HSePO), for the biosynthesis of the Sec-tRNA. Here, we discovered an alternative pathway in Sec metabolism mediated by peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6), independent of SCLY.
