We describe two cases of extensive indolent calvarial osteomyelitis after rhino-orbital-mucormycosis in diabetic patients previously diagnosed with COVID-19. Both patients presented with acute rhino-orbital symptoms about one month after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Treatment with intravenous liposomal Amphotericin B and prompt radical surgical debridement was instituted, but calvarial osteomyelitis ensued and persisted chronically despite maintenance of antifungal therapy and partial debridement of necrotic calvarial bone.

Background: P2X7 receptors (P2X7R) are ligand-gated ion channels activated by adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), which are involved in processes that are dysfunctional in stress response and depression, such as neurotransmitter release, and neuroimmune response. Genetic and pharmacological inhibition of the P2X7R induce antidepressant-like effects in animals exposed to stress. However, the effect of P2X7R antagonism in an animal model of depression based on selective breeding has not previously been studied, and the mechanism underling the antidepressant-like effect induced by the P2X7R blockade remains unknown.

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease caused by the growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus leading to inflammation, pelvic pain, and infertility. The relationship between the amount of ectopic uterine tissue growth and the severity of symptoms is still unclear. The presence or degree of pain and infertility does not correlate with the stage of disease as currently defined.

Inadequate corral facilities and improper handling are major causes of stress in beef cattle. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of minor changes in the corral and adoption of good handling practices on the behavior, cortisol release, and time spent taking blood samples in Nellore cows. Minor corral changes included obstructing the cow's vision when the handler walked deep into the animal's flight zone and the elimination of bright objects, color contrasts, puddles, shadows, and darkness in the corral.

Recent evidence indicates that nonprofessional immune cells such as epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts also contribute to innate immunity via secretion of cytokines. Fibroblasts are the principal type of cell found in the periodontal connective tissues and they are involved in the immune response during periodontal disease. The role of fibroblasts in the recognition of pathogens via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) has been established; however, few studies have been conducted concerning the involvement of innate immune receptors in the recognition of Candida albicans by gingival fibroblast.

Bone grafts are used in the medical-surgical field for anatomical and functional reconstruction of lost bone areas, aiding the bone repair process by osteogenesis, osteinduction and osteoconduction. New materials such as F1 (fraction 1) protein extracted from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis have been investigated and currently present important properties for tissue repair, and are associated with neoangiogenesis, promoting cell adhesion and extracellular matrix formation. The main objective of this study was to investigate the association of F1 protein to different bone grafts in the repair of critical bone defects in the calvaria of Wistar rats.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common human cancers worldwide. Recent studies show that regulatory T cells (Treg) have a critical role in the modulation of an antitumor immune response, and consequently the SCC development. Because the accumulation of Tregs at the tumor site is, in part, due to selective recruitment through CCR5- and CCR5-associated chemokines, we investigated the role of CCR5 in the SCC development.

Excessive sodium (Na) intake in modern society has been associated with several chronic disorders such as hypertension. Several studies suggest that early life events can program physiological systems and lead to functional changes in adulthood. Therefore, we investigated behavioral and neuroendocrine responses under basal conditions and after 48 h of water deprivation in adult (60-day-old Wistar rats) male, Wistar rats originating from dams were offered only water or 0.

An 8-year-old boy initially presented with an orbitopalpebral mass diagnosed clinically and radiologically as a low-flow diffuse venous lymphatic malformation involving the left upper eyelid and orbit. Over 8 months of follow up, he had 2 acute episodes of severe orbital inflammation that warranted hospitalization and treatment with intravenous antibiotic, steroids and surgical debulking. After a third surgical excision, the lesion remained clinically stable.
