Article Synopsis
  • Lung transplantation for patients with end-stage lung disease from COVID-19 is increasingly common, though there is a lack of comprehensive international studies on the subject.
  • In a multicenter analysis involving 11 major lung transplant centers, 46 out of 1606 lung transplants were performed due to COVID-19-related conditions, showing distinct demographic and clinical characteristics compared to other patients.
  • The 30-day survival rates for transplant recipients due to COVID-19 were found to be similar to those without COVID-19, suggesting that lung transplantation is a viable option for select patients suffering from COVID-19-related lung damage.

Department of Anesthesiology, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY; Division of Vascular Surgery, VA Western NY Healthcare System, Buffalo, NY.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how high blood sugar levels (measured by hemoglobin A1c) affect patients with diabetes who had surgery to improve blood flow in their legs.
  • Patients with higher A1c levels (over 7%) were more likely to have problems like losing a limb compared to those with lower levels (7% or less).
  • The results showed that people with high A1c had lower chances of keeping their legs healthy and fewer successful surgeries in the long run, especially after certain types of surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines kidney retransplantation (re-KT) outcomes specifically comparing HIV-positive (HIV+) and HIV-negative (HIV-) patients from 2014 to 2022.
  • The research shows that HIV+ recipients face higher risks of graft loss due to factors like being more likely to be Black, experiencing delayed graft function, and having significant HLA mismatches.
  • The findings indicate a need for better organ matching and strategies to improve re-KT success in HIV+ patients, as they exhibited significantly lower graft survival rates overall.

Impaired alveolar epithelial regeneration in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is attributed to telomere dysfunction in type II alveolar epithelial cells (ACs). Genetic susceptibility, aging, and toxicant exposures, including tobacco smoke (TS), contribute to telomere dysfunction in ACs. Here we investigated whether improvement of telomere function plays a role in CSP7-mediated protection of ACs against ongoing senescence and apoptosis during bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis (PF) as well as alveolar injury caused by chronic TS exposure.
