Expanding the Spectrum of Autosomal Dominant -Related Disease: Case Report and Literature Review.

Genes (Basel)

September 2024

Pediatric Unit, Department of Clinical, Surgical, Diagnostic, and Pediatric Sciences, University of Pavia, 27100 Pavia, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) are disorders that can be caused by new mutations in a specific gene, leading to different symptoms, from severe conditions to milder ones like autism.
  • A case study of a six-year-old boy showed he had a new mutation in that gene, but he did not develop epilepsy and had a normal brain scan over five years.
  • This case helps us understand that not everyone with mutations in this gene will have serious problems, which is important for doctors to know when diagnosing developmental delays.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Khorana, PROTECHT, CONKO, and COMPASS-CAT scores in identifying risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in lung cancer patients.
  • A total of 591 patients were analyzed, with 108 experiencing VTE; results showed that the CONKO score had better discriminatory ability than the Khorana score over both 6 and 12 months.
  • The findings highlight a decrease in the Khorana score's effectiveness over time and suggest the need for further research to validate the CONKO score and the identified risk factors.

Most people eat meat, yet report valuing the environment, animal life, and their health, which contradicts this dietary behaviour. The psychological discomfort aroused by this value-behaviour inconsistency, and the strategies meat eaters use to resolve this unpleasant state, is termed the 'meat paradox'. Vegetarians eschew meat consumption, but the negative implications of dairy are comparable to meat.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute disorder of the peripheral nervous system, causing flaccid paralysis, areflexia, and variable sensory involvement. Proximal as well distal muscles of the limbs can be involved, and in most severe and advanced cases progresses to respiratory failure and death. GBS is considered an autoimmune disease, and at the basis of the attack at the peripheral nervous system different mechanisms have been recognized, in particular viral infections or other immune stimulations.

Improving diagnostic accuracy of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using models of brain imaging data is a key goal of the field, but this objective is challenging due to the limited size and phenotypic depth of clinical datasets. Leveraging the phenotypic diversity in large non-clinical datasets such as the UK Biobank (UKBB), offers a potential solution to this problem. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether classification models trained on non-clinical populations will generalise to individuals with clinical OCD.

Electrocardiographic predictors of clinical outcomes in nonischemic cardiomyopathy patients with left bundle branch area pacing cardiac resynchronization therapy.

Heart Rhythm

September 2024

The School of Medicine and Psychology, Australian National University, Australian Capital Territory, Australia; Canberra Heart Rhythm Centre, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • During left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP), the shape of the paced QRS complex can change based on where the pacing occurs, and its relation to patient outcomes is not fully understood.
  • This study involved 59 heart failure patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy, assessing how variations in the QRS morphology influenced their heart function, particularly the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
  • Key findings showed that specific QRS morphologies (qR type) and certain pacing test results were linked to improved heart function, while a prolonged R-wave peak time did not effectively predict outcomes; nonresponsive patients often experienced more severe changes in their QRS readings over time.

The Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) has been widely used as a measure of subjective cognitive function in everyday life for decades. However, the evidence on how it relates to objective performance on executive function tasks is mixed. One possible reason for these mixed results is that the CFQ has selective relationships with some aspects of executive function and not others.

Mostly harmless? Clinical practice guidelines need further consideration of psychotherapy adverse effects.

Australas Psychiatry

September 2024

Department of Psychiatry, Monash University, Clayton, VIC, Australia; College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Adelaide, SA, Australia; and Consortium of Australian-Academic Psychiatrists for Independent Policy and Research Analysis (CAPIPRA), Canberra, ACT, Australia.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists clinical practice guidelines on mood disorders recommend psychotherapy as foundational care for patients with acute depression with minimal discussion of any potential adverse effects. Randomised controlled trial evidence on psychotherapy adverse effects is limited. This is problematic because clinicians must balance the benefits of treatment against the harms, and clinical decisions become skewed without data on adverse effects.
