Background: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a widely used method for localizing and semi-quantifying proteins in tissue samples. Traditional IHC analysis often relies on manually counting 200 cells within a designated area, a time-intensive and subjective process that can compromise reproducibility and accuracy. Advances in digital scanning and bioimage analysis tools, such as the open-source software QuPath, enable semi-automated cell counting, reducing subjectivity and increasing efficiency.

This perspective article explores the importance of fostering interest in gastroenterology among medical students and addressing the barriers that deter them from pursuing careers in this specialty. The paper highlights the critical role of early exposure to research, specialized electives, and mentorship in encouraging students to consider gastroenterology as a career choice. Current challenges include limited access to specialized electives and research opportunities within UK medical schools, inadequate hands-on experience, and a perceived lack of stability and control over future training pathways.

Association of risk assessment at diagnosis with healthcare resource utilization and health-related quality of life outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and survival for patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), stratified by 1-year mortality risk at diagnosis. Adults diagnosed with PAH at the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit between 2012 and 2019 were included. Patients were categorized as low, intermediate, or high risk for 1-year mortality at diagnosis.

Introduction: Intervertebral disc degeneration and Modic change are the main spinal structural changes associated with chronic low back pain (LBP). Both conditions are thought to manifest local inflammation and if inflammatory proteins translocate to the blood circulation could be detected systemically. The work here assesses whether the presence of disc degeneration is associated with detectable blood level changes of five inflammatory markers and whether chronic LBP is associated with these changes.

This review focuses on the current state of knowledge of molecular mechanisms of IL-1 release from cells in atherosclerotic plaques.

The cartilaginous endplates (CEP) are key components of the intervertebral disc (IVD) necessary for sustaining the nutrition of the disc while distributing mechanical loads and preventing the disc from bulging into the adjacent vertebral body. The size, shape, and composition of the CEP are essential in maintaining its function, and degeneration of the CEP is considered a contributor to early IVD degeneration. In addition, the CEP is implicated in Modic changes, which are often associated with low back pain.
