Aging is a known independent risk factor for several cardiovascular diseases. Here, we evaluated potential effects and possible mechanisms through which alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) affect hydrogen peroxide (HO)-induced senescence in H9C2 cardiomyocytes. A series of AOS molecules, including oligoM, oligoG, M-5, and G-5, were investigated.

Proline is a unique amino acid in that its side-chain is cyclised to the backbone, thus giving proline an exceptional rigidity and a considerably restricted conformational space. Polyproline forms two well-characterized helical structures: a left-handed polyproline helix (PPII) and a right-handed polyproline helix (PPI). Usually, sequences made only of prolyl residues are in PPII conformation, but even sequences not rich in proline but which are rich in glycine, lysine, glutamate, or aspartate have also a tendency to form PPII helices.

P-selectin has been shown to enhance growth and metastasis of mouse tumors by promoting regulatory T cell (Treg) infiltration into the tumors. Theoretically, a P-selectin antagonist could suppress the process. Popylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS) is a heparin-like marine drug, which was originally approved to treat cardiovascular disease in China.

Background: Snake venom botrocetin facilitates von Willebrand factor (VWF) binding to platelet GPIbα and has been widely used for the diagnosis of von Willebrand disease and GPIb-related disorders. Botrocetin is also commonly employed for the development/characterization of antithrombotics targeting the GPIb-VWF axis.
Objectives: To explore the alternative receptor(s)/mechanisms that participate in botrocetin-induced platelet aggregation.

Nutrition in early life plays a key role in shaping an infant's future health. There is limited understanding of the perspectives of Vietnamese mothers with children under 24 months of age regarding breastmilk expression, donation and use. In this cross-sectional study, an online survey was administered through two parenting social media communities to assess opinions on breastmilk expression, breastmilk donation including contributions from bereaved mothers and the use of donor human milk.

Ferroptosis is a unique type of cell death, characterized by its reliance on iron dependency and lipid peroxidation (LPO). Consequently, small-molecule ferroptosis modulators have garnered substantial interest as a promising avenue for cancer therapy. Herein, we explored the ferroptosis sensitivity of epigenetic modulators and found that the antiproliferative effects of class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are significantly reliant on ferroptosis.

Checkpoint blockades have emerged as a frontline approach in cancer management, designed to enhance the adaptive immune response against tumors. However, its clinical efficacy is limited to a narrow range of tumor types, which necessitates the exploration of novel strategies that target another main branch of the immune system. One such potential strategy is the therapeutic modulation of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) pathways in innate immune cells, which have shown promise in tumor eradication.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a carcinogen that is not only widespread in the environment, but is also produced endogenously by metabolic processes. In organisms, FA is converted to formic acid in a glutathione (GSH)-dependent manner by alcohol dehydrogenase 5 (ADH5). The abnormal accumulation of FA in the body can cause a variety of diseases, especially cognitive impairment leading to Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Liver injury with marked elevation of aspartate aminotransferase enzyme (AST) is commonly observed in dengue infection. To understand the pathogenesis of this liver damage, we compared the plasma levels of hepatic specific, centrilobular predominant enzymes (glutamate dehydrogenase, GLDH; glutathione S transferase-α, αGST), periportal enriched 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), periportal predominant arginase-1 (ARG-1), and other non-specific biomarkers (paraoxonase-1, PON-1) in patients with different outcomes of dengue infection. This hospital-based study enrolled 87 adult dengue patients, stratified into three groups based on plasma AST levels (< 80, 80-400, > 400 U/L) in a 1:1:1 ratio (n = 40, n = 40, n = 40, respectively.

The dopamine transporter has a crucial role in regulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission by uptake of dopamine into neurons and contributes to the abuse potential of psychomotor stimulants. Despite decades of study, the structure, substrate binding, conformational transitions and drug-binding poses of human dopamine transporter remain unknown. Here we report structures of the human dopamine transporter in its apo state, and in complex with the substrate dopamine, the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug methylphenidate, and the dopamine-uptake inhibitors GBR12909 and benztropine.

Hydrogels are promising materials for wound protection, but in wet, or underwater environments, the hydration layer and swelling of hydrogels can seriously reduce adhesion and limit their application. In this study, inspired by the structural characteristics of strong barnacle wet adhesion and combined with solvent exchange, a robust wet adhesive hydrogel (CP-Gel) based on chitosan and 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate was obtained by breaking the hydration layer and resisting swelling. As a result, CP-Gel exhibited strong wet adhesion to various interfaces even underwater, adapted to joint movement and skin twisting, resisted sustained rushing water, and sealed damaged organs.
