Background Although the effects of psychological health and optimism have been extensively investigated, data from community-based cohorts assessing the association between psychological health and cardiovascular disease risk factors are sparse, and the concurrent relationship between subjective well-being and cardiovascular health has not been studied. Methods and Results The current cross-sectional study examined the association between well-being and cardiovascular risk factors among 719 individuals living in a middle- to low-income neighborhood. Wastewater monitoring for virus infections within communities can complement conventional clinical surveillance. Currently, most SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) clinical testing is voluntary and inconsistently available, except for a few occupational and educational settings, and therefore likely underrepresents actual population prevalence. Randomized testing on a regular basis to estimate accurate population-level infection rates is prohibitively costly and is hampered by a range of limitations and barriers associated with participation in clinical research.

Vascular dysfunction and decreased cerebral blood flow are linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Loss of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative stress in human cerebrovascular endothelium increase expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and enhance production of the Aβ peptide, suggesting that loss of endothelial NO contributes to AD pathology. We hypothesize that decreased systemic NO bioavailability in AD may also impact lung microcirculation and induce pulmonary endothelial dysfunction.

The effects of serotonin (5-HT) on the microvasculature of cremaster muscles were compared in decerebrate, ketamine- and pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. 5-HT-induced constriction of large distributing arterioles was enhanced in the ketamine- and pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. Precapillary arterioles of pentobarbital-anesthetized animals were more sensitive to 5-HT-induced dilation than either decerebrate or ketamine-anesthetized animals.
