Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders worldwide, is closely linked with an enhanced risk of atherosclerosis. However, the molecular mechanism of this linkage is not still clear. Genetic variations in the mTOR gene may increase the susceptibility of individuals to these diseases.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are among the players of inflammation during atherosclerosis. We assessed the effects of Eritoran, a TLR-4 antagonist, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokines production by Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) of patients with high-stenosis (HS) (n = 6) and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 6) co-cultured with Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs). LPS stimulation significantly increased the levels of IL-6 (P = 0.

Cellular senescence is an irreversible arrest of cell proliferation triggered by different stimuli, including DNA damage, telomere shortening and oncogenic stress. Senescent cells, by releasing the senescence-associated-secretory-phenotype (SASP), contribute to various diseases pathogenesis. Human atherosclerotic plaque contains cells with multiple markers of senescence that associate with disease severity.

Regarding the role of micro RNAs (miRNA) in the proliferation and differentiation of T cells as well as the controversy around the role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), the effects of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (La) were investigated in the induction of miRNAs and apoptosis in CD4+ memory T (Tem) cells of AAA patients and controls. Signature atherosclerosis miRNAs 21, 92a, 146a, 155, 326 and 663 were measured in the sera and tissues of AAA patients and control. PBMCs separately and in co-culture with HUVEC were treated with Hp-water-extract (HpWE) and La-conditioned-medium (LaCM).

The relationship between high levels of anti-Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) IgG in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cerebrovascular atherosclerosis commends a possible similar association in other vessels. We aimed to investigate the association of VZV-seropositivity with coronary artery atherosclerosis. We recruited 88 newly diagnosed patients with more than 50% stenosis in at least one of the main coronary arteries.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a degenerative inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. AAA is characterized by abdominal aortic dilatation more than 3 cm and is often asymptomatic, but the rupture of aneurysm can lead to death. Age, smoking and male sex are major predisposing factors of AAA.

Objective: Brain tumors are of high mortality and morbidity for which there is still no cure. The TNF family cytokine, A Proliferation Inducing Ligand (APRIL), is shown to help proliferation and development of tumor cells. We assessed serum levels of APRIL in patients with glioma, meningioma and schwannoma in comparison to healthy individuals.

Background: Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in Iranian women and affects them at least one decade younger than their counterparts in developed countries. Breast tumor progression and metastasis is accompanied by a decrease in the membranous expression of Syndecan-1 and an increase in its shedding. We measured the level of soluble Syndecan-1 in the sera of Iranian patients with breast cancer.

Given the anti-inflammatory and protective role of probiotics in atherosclerosis and the regulatory role of micro RNA (miRNA) in endothelial cell (dys) functions, this study aimed to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus (La) on cellular death and the expression of miRNA-21, 92a, 155, and 663 in human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) induced by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (Ec-LPS). LPS-treated and untreated HUVECs were cultured in the presence of different La conditions such as La-conditioned media (LaCM), La water extract (LaWE), La culture-filtered (LaFS) and unfiltered supernatants (LaUFS). After 24 h, apoptosis, necrosis and the levels of the mentioned miRNAs were measured using flow cytometry and real-time PCR methods, respectively.

Several CD4+ T helper (Th) cell subsets are shown to play a role in atherosclerotic lesion formation and progression. We investigated the frequencies of IL-17 and IFN-γ producing CD4+ T-cell subsets in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of 10 patients with atherosclerosis and 6 individuals with normal/insignificant coronary artery disease. Th1 and Th17 memory and effector T-cells were enumerated by flowcytometry and correlated with the clinical data and lipid profiles of the subjects.

Background: Inflammation plays a major role in the development and progression of gastric and other gastrointestinal tumors. The IL-17 family of cytokines has been under investigation as targets of immunotherapy.

Materials And Methods: We investigated the levels of IL-17A inflammatory cytokine in the sera of 57 patients with gastric cancer (GC) and 90 healthy age/sex matched controls using ELISA methods.

Background: IL-17 family of cytokines and human IL-23R play important and sometimes contradictory roles in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases as well as human malignancies. Different alleles of this cytokine family may differentially affect IL-17 secretion. We sought to investigate the association of IL-17A, IL-17F and IL-23R gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility to colorectal cancer (CRC).

We investigated PD-1 levels on VZV-specific CD8+ T-cells of patients with zoster and the effect of PD-1 on the telomerase activity. CD3, CD8, CD137 and PD-1 expressions were analyzed on PBMCs from 9 symptomatic and 5 asymptomatic individuals. The effect of PD-1 blockade at the time of stimulation on the telomerase activity of non-senescent CD57-CD45RO+CD8+CD3+ memory T-cells was evaluated.

Background: There is a Th1/Th2 cytokine imbalance and expression of IL-17 in patients with brain tumours. We aimed to compare the levels of IL-17A and IL-6 in sera of glioma, meningioma and schwannoma patients as well as in healthy individuals.

Materials And Methods: IL-17A and IL-6 levels were measured in sera of 38 glioma, 24 meningioma and 18 schwannoma patients for comparison with 26 healthy controls by commercial ELISA assays.

Aim: The interrelation between nicotine and IL-17A in bladder cancer (BC) patients was investigated.

Methods: IL-17A in the sera of 121 BC patients who smoked nicotine, 80 nonsmoker BC patients, 29 and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy smokers and nonsmokers were also measured.

Results: IL-17A was elevated in smoker and nonsmoker BC patients compared with smoker and nonsmoker controls (p = 0.
