The present study aimed to determine the spatiotemporal dynamics of microvascular and astrocytic adaptation during hypoxia-induced cerebral angiogenesis. Adult C57BL/6J and Tie2-green fluorescent protein (GFP) mice with vascular endothelial cells expressing GFP were exposed to normobaric hypoxia for 3 weeks, whereas the three-dimensional microvessels and astrocytes were imaged repeatedly using two-photon microscopy. After 7 to 14 days of hypoxia, a vessel sprout appeared from the capillaries with a bump-like head shape (mean diameter 14 μm), and stagnant blood cells were seen inside the sprout.

In multicellular organisms, germ cells are an extremely specialized cell type with the vital function of transmitting genetic information across generations. In this respect, they are responsible for the perpetuity of species, and are separated from somatic lineages at each generation. Interestingly, in the past two decades research has shown that germ cells have the potential to proceed along two distinct pathways: gametogenesis or pluripotency.

Purpose: We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (follitropin alfa) and purified urinary human follicle-stimulating hormone (urofollitropin) for ovulation induction in Japanese women with anovulatory infertility;also to verify the noninferiority (in terms of ovulation rate) of follitropin alfa versus urofollitropin.
Methods: In a Phase III, multicenter, single-blind, parallel-group study, we enrolled 265 Japanese women aged 20-39 years. The patients were menstruating without apparent ovulation or were amenorrheic (with a positive progestin challenge test), and had failed to conceive with anti-estrogen ovulation-induction therapy.

Objective: It is well known that mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) displays a variety of biological behaviors. While the high-grade type is a highly aggressive tumor, its low-grade counterpart usually demonstrates a more benign nature and several systems have, therefore, been proposed to grade this neoplasm.
Methods: This report analyzes 43 patients suffering from head and neck MEC, who were treated in our department during the period from 1989 to 2005.

Background: In thoracic surgery, although infrequent, we encounter unexpected damage to the pulmonary artery (PA). In the present study, we evaluated the hemostatic efficacy of a newly developed fibrin-based sheet material, thrombin sheet, coupled with liquid fibrinogen (TSF), in an experimental model of PA hemorrhage.
Methods: Female beagles (n = 8) were used for the study.

Liposarcoma is a soft tissue malignant tumor that is common in adults, though the incidence of this type of tumor in the head and neck region is extremely low. Herein, we report a case of myxoid liposarcoma occurring in the retropharyngeal space. We were unable to make a proper diagnosis of this tumor prior to surgery because of the radiographic findings and the anatomical location resembled those of neurogenic tumor.

Object: The segmental-type of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) of the cervical spine is distinct from other types in its morphological features. Whether the results of expansive open-door laminoplasty for the segmental-type are different from those for other types remains unclear. To clarify this issue, the long-term results after surgical treatment of segmental-type OPLL were compared with those of other types.

Questions persist regarding male germ stem cells and how they mature during the prespermatogenic period of testicular development. We successfully labeled the prespermatogonia with green fluorescence protein (GFP) by using Oct-4 enhancer/promoter. This study shows that GFP was specifically expressed in prespermatogonia, spermatogonia and spermatids that faithfully reproduce the endogenous expression of Oct-4.

Background/aims: Ghrelin, a novel growth-hormone-releasing peptide, has been reported to be localized mainly in the A-like cells in the gastric fundic mucosa. With the extension of gastric inflammation caused by H. pylori infection, gastric mucosal atrophy extends from the antrum to the corpus, which is the predominant site of localization of the ghrelin-producing A-like cells.

One major concern after surgery is postoperative pulmonary complications such as atelectasis, aspiration, pneumonia, and respiratory failure. Progress in preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation, in systemic management including respiratory management, and progress in understanding the pathophysiology of acute respiratory failure have improved prevention and the outcome of treatment. However, some conditions remain very difficult to treat, like respiratory failure accompanied by infection or multiple organ failure.

Acetylcholine (Ach) has been considered a major neurotransmitter in the inner ear efferent nerve endings. A bioassay analysis has shown that the electrical stimulation of the crossed olivocochlear bundle increased the Ach-like activity in the perilymph. Applying in vivo microdialysis techniques and high-performance liquid chromatography to the perilymph, the change of Ach level was thus measured before and after alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA), a glutamate receptor agonist, was added to the perfusate.

Lipoprotein glomerulopathy (LPG) is a newly recognized renal disease characterized by abnormal lipoprotein deposition in the glomeruli, dysbetalipoproteinemia, and a high level of plasma apolipoprotein (apo) E. We identified a novel apo E mutation in a 56-year-old Japanese male with LPG. Although the plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels were normal, the levels of intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apo E were elevated to 13 mg/dl (0.

A number of cells--fibroblasts, chondrocytes and osteoblasts for example--lack the conspicuous cell surface specialisation known as lamina: instead, they possess subplasmalemmal linear densities (SLDs). These have been documented ultrastructurally as having a lamina-like external component but the extent to which they resemble true lamina in terms of protein composition has not been investigated. The relationship of the external component of the SLD to true lamina was examined in this study by light microscope immunostaining, conventional transmission electron microscopy and immuno-electronmicroscopy in intralobular stromal fibroblasts.

While epithelial structure and functions have been substantially investigated in many organs, the mesenchymal elements have received less attention. Compared with follicular epithelial cells, there are a few morphological studies on the stroma of human thyroid gland. In order to characterize more fully and assess its possible functions, 15 samples of surgical and autopsy human thyroid tissue were studied by classical histology, immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, electron microscopic immunohistochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy.
