ObsTIVA-UK: a service evaluation of obstetric total intravenous anaesthesia in the United Kingdom.

We conducted a prospective observational service evaluation across the United Kingdom on the use of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) for obstetric surgery between November 2022 and June 2023. The primary aim was to describe the incidence of TIVA for obstetric surgery within participating units, with secondary aims to describe maternal and neonatal postoperative recovery indicators. Of 184 maternity units in the United Kingdom, 30 (16%) contributed data to the service evaluation.

Investigation of the relationship between phenylalanine in venous plasma and capillary blood using volumetric blood collection devices.

Measurement of plasma and dried blood spot (DBS) phenylalanine (Phe) is key to monitoring patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). The relationship between plasma and capillary DBS Phe concentrations has been investigated previously, however, differences in methodology, calibration approach and assumptions about the volume of blood in a DBS sub-punch has complicated this. Point-of-care coagulation testing for postpartum haemorrhage.

The use of viscoelastic haemostatic assays (VHAs) to guide blood product replacement during postpartum haemorrhage is expanding. Rotem and TEG devices can be used to detect and treat clinically significant hypofibrinogenaemia, although evidence to support the role of VHAs for guiding fresh frozen plasma and platelet transfusion is less clear. If Rotem/TEG traces are normal, clinicians should investigate for another cause of bleeding, and haemostatic support is not required.

Background: There is a need to understand and mitigate the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for children known to be vulnerable. Data from prior to the pandemic are required to provide robust assessments of the socio-emotional impacts of COVID-19 and identify those who are more vulnerable.

Method: This study capitalises on an ongoing UK study of primary school children (4-8 years) identified prior to the pandemic as "at risk" for mental health problems by teachers.

This year's Congress of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) was hosted virtually from Philadelphia July 17-21, 2021. The conference, now held annually, highlighted cutting-edge advances in basic, population and clinical sciences of relevance to the Society. Despite being held virtually, the 2021 congress was of the same scope and quality as an annual meeting held in person.

Association of Fluorescent Protein Pairs and Its Significant Impact on Fluorescence and Energy Transfer.

Fluorescent proteins (FPs) are commonly used in pairs to monitor dynamic biomolecular events through changes in proximity via distance dependent processes such as Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The impact of FP association is assessed by predicting dimerization sites in silico and stabilizing the dimers by bio-orthogonal covalent linkages. In each tested case dimerization changes inherent fluorescence, including FRET.
