Introduction: Global data sharing is essential. This is the premise of the Academic Research Organization (ARO) Council, which was initiated in Japan in 2013 and has since been expanding throughout Asia and into Europe and the United States. The volume of data is growing exponentially, providing not only challenges but also the clear opportunity to understand and treat diseases in ways not previously considered.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by unexplained thickening of the left ventricle and affects about 0.2% of adults, with more precise measurements possible using cardiac MRI compared to echocardiography.
  • - In a study of 4,972 individuals aged 45 to 84 without other heart conditions, 67 participants (1.4%) were found to have unexplained left ventricular hypertrophy using MRI, with a higher prevalence in men than women.
  • - The study categorized the hypertrophy as focal, intermediate, or diffuse, and the findings suggest a need for further research on diagnosing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in various populations.

Background The predictive value of coronary artery calcium ( CAC ) has been widely studied; however, little is known about specific characteristics of CAC that are most predictive. We aimed to determine the independent associations of Agatston score, CAC volume, CAC area, CAC mass, and CAC density score with major adverse cardiac events in patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Methods and Results A total of 379 symptomatic participants, aged 45 to 85 years, referred for invasive coronary angiography, who underwent coronary calcium scanning and computed tomography angiography as part of the CORE 320 (Combined Noninvasive Coronary Angiography and Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Using 320 Detector Computed Tomography) study, were included.

To understand subjective evaluation of an option, various disciplines have quantified the interaction between reward and effort during decision making, producing an estimate of economic utility, namely the subjective 'goodness' of an option. However, variables that affect utility of an option also influence the vigor of movements toward that option. For example, expectation of reward increases speed of saccadic eye movements, whereas expectation of effort decreases this speed.

The presence and stage of liver fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is strongly associated with mortality. Thus, both preventing and reversing fibrosis are critically important approaches to prevent death or the need for liver transplantation from NASH. Recently, fibrosis in several mouse models of organ injury was shown to be prevented and reversed with the potent small molecule, arginine-glycine-aspartic acid tripeptide (RGD)-binding, integrin antagonist (3S)-3-(3-bromo-5-(tert-butyl)phenyl)-3-(2-(3-hydroxy-5-((5-hydroxy-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-yl)amino)benzamido)acetamido)propanoic acid (Center for World Health and Medicine [CWHM]-12).

Background Obesity contributes significantly to risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and especially for heart failure (HF). An elevated body mass index (BMI) in older adults might not carry the same risk as in younger adults, but measured weights at other lifetime points are often not available. We determined the associations of self-reported weights from early- and mid-adulthood, after accounting for measured weight at older age, with incident HF/ASCVD risk.

Background Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease ( ASCVD ) accounts for approximately one third of deaths in women. Although there is an established relationship between positive patient experiences, health-related quality of life, and improved health outcomes, little is known about gender differences in patient-reported outcomes among ASCVD patients. We therefore compared gender differences in patient-centered outcomes among individuals with ASCVD .

Patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) have higher levels of immune activation, impaired antigen-specific responses, and accelerated fibrogenesis compared to patients monoinfected with HCV. Whether different direct-acting antiviral (DAA) combinations have differential effects on immunophenotypes and functions following successful HCV therapy remain unknown. Therefore, we aimed to assess the peripheral T-cell immunophenotypes and functions in patients coinfected with HIV/HCV who were successfully treated with combination DAA treatment regimens.

Background Associations between subtle changes in cardiac and cerebral structure and function are not well understood, with some studies suggesting that subclinical cardiac changes may be associated with markers of vascular brain insult. Methods and Results Data from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) Study (5th ARIC visit; 2011-2013; N=1974) were used to explore relationships between abnormalities of cardiac structure/function and subclinical brain disease and to test specific associations between those cardiac and vascular brain changes that share a common mechanism. In adjusted models white matter hyperintensities were 0.

Background HIV + people are at increased risk of coronary artery disease, but the responsible mechanisms are incompletely understood. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 ( PCSK 9) is traditionally recognized for its importance in cholesterol metabolism; however, recent data suggest an additional, low-density lipoprotein receptor-independent adverse effect on endothelial cell inflammation and function. We tested the hypotheses that PCSK 9 levels are increased and that abnormal coronary endothelial function is related to PCSK 9 serum levels in HIV + individuals.
