Background: Implantation of the double-J stent is a common procedure in urology. The function of this device is to maintain the flow of urine from the ureteropelvic junction to the urinary bladder when the ureter is blocked or partially blocked for some reason. Once in place, the stent may cause low back pain, hematuria, symptoms of urinary irritation, a reduction in labor capacity, infection and calcification which are side effects that are easy to manage.

Objective: Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is essential for folliculogenesis, acting through the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) that is present on the membrane of granulosa cells. Polymorphisms in the FSHR gene may lead to an altered pattern of receptor expression on the cell surface or to changes in affinity for FSH. The aim of this prospective study was to detect any association between the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) gene Ala307Thr polymorphism (rs6165) and ovarian reserve, ovarian response or clinical results in IVF/ICSI treatment.

Cell-free DNA fragments detected in blood and in other biological fluids are released from apoptotic/necrotic cells. In this study, we analyzed cfDNA levels in follicular fluid (FF) samples from patients with infertility. Samples were collected from 178 infertile women and cfDNA was extracted and quantified by qPCR, using ALU115 and ALU247 primers, and statistical correlations were performed.

  • Capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, are highly adaptable to urban environments in South America and can carry various zoonotic diseases.
  • A study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, aimed to check for the presence of fecal-borne viruses in capybara feces by collecting 337 samples from 2018 to 2020 and testing for multiple virus types.
  • Results showed all samples tested negative for fecal-borne viruses, suggesting that they pose a minor public health risk in the studied areas, but ongoing monitoring of wildlife is vital to manage potential viral threats.

Proteoglycans orchestrate remodeling of prostatic cytoarchitecture after androgenic blockade in old gerbils.

Prostate

February 2023

Department of Biological Sciences, Institute of Biosciences, Humanities and Exact Sciences, São Paulo State University (Unesp), São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate modifications in proteoglycan morphology and composition in the prostatic stroma of 18-month-old gerbils after surgical castration, in association or not with an androgenic blockade.

Methods: The animals (n = 5) were sorted into groups subjected or not to antiandrogen treatment (flutamide 10 mg/kg/day) administered for the total postsurgery period and euthanized at 7- or 30-day postcastration; the control group consisted of intact animals. Tissue analysis included immunohistochemical assessment (perlecan and chondroitin sulfate) and proteoglycan morphology was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy.

Chikungunya (CHIKV) is an arthritogenic alphavirus that causes a self-limiting disease usually accompanied by joint pain and/or polyarthralgia with disabling characteristics. Immune responses developed during the acute phase of CHIKV infection determine the rate of disease progression and resolution. Annexin A1 () is involved in both initiating inflammation and preventing over-response, being essential for a balanced end of inflammation.

Background and objective Thrombosis is one of the significant challenges associated with cardiovascular diseases and a prominent cause of death globally. This study aimed to determine the monthly and overall mortality rates by sex and age group in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in those patients. We also investigated whether the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) P.

Background Thoracic duct (TD) anomaly can be quite variable and dangerous in surgical interventions in the neck region as there are numerous variations in its formation and topography. This highlights the importance of full knowledge about the TD and its anatomical variations. Thus, it is important to emphasize that the lack of anatomical-clinical knowledge or surgical skill during an intervention can significantly hamper successful results.

Lymphatic drainage is the main form of therapy for lymphedema, as it affects the pathophysiology of this clinical condition. The two main objectives of lymphatic drainage are the formation and drainage of lymph. In recent years, Godoy & Godoy developed a novel concept of mechanical lymphatic drainage involving a device denominated RAGodoy®, which performs passive exercises of the lower and upper limbs as a form of lymphatic drainage.

Objective: To investigate the influence of the Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) TP53 rs1625895, TP73 rs3765730, MMP9 rs17576, and MTHFR rs868014 on ovarian reserve (OR) in infertile patients.

Study Design: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out in 145 infertile women. The patients were divided into two groups according to ovarian reserve, characterized by association between AMH levels and AFC:After patient distribution, both groups were compared (LOR X NOR) regarding the genotypes of the SNPs TP53 T/C rs1625895, TP73 G/A rs3765730, MMP9 Gln/Arg rs17576, and MTHFR A/G rs868014.

Background: Current evidence points to a state of hypercoagulability (consequence of hyperinflammation) as an important pathogenic mechanism that contributes to the increase in mortality in cases of COVID-19. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of deep-vein thrombosis on mortality patient's infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Method: A clinical trial was conducted involving 200 consecutive patients with COVID-19-100 patients who were positive for deep-vein thrombosis (venous Doppler ultrasound) and 100 who were negative for deep-vein thrombosis at a public hospital.

The Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in Brazil occurred in regions where dengue viruses (DENV) are historically endemic. We investigated the differences in adverse pregnancy/infant outcomes in two cohorts comprising 114 pregnant women with PCR-confirmed ZIKV infection in Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil ( = 50) and Manaus, in the north region of the country ( = 64). Prior exposure to DENV was evaluated through plaque reduction neutralizing antibody assays (PRNT 80) and DENV IgG serologies.
