Background: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic, CTG repeat expansion disorder characterized by a slow, progressive decline in skeletal muscle function. A biomarker correlating RNA mis-splicing, the core pathogenic disease mechanism, and muscle performance is crucial for assessing response to disease-modifying interventions. We evaluated the Myotonic Dystrophy Splice Index (SI), a composite RNA splicing biomarker incorporating 22 disease-specific events, as a potential biomarker of DM1 muscle weakness.

Mindfulness Training vs Recovery Support for Opioid Use, Craving, and Anxiety During Buprenorphine Treatment: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: During buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), risk factors for opioid relapse or treatment dropout include comorbid substance use disorder, anxiety, or residual opioid craving. There is a need for a well-powered trial to evaluate virtually delivered groups, including both mindfulness and evidence-based approaches, to address these comorbidities during buprenorphine treatment.

Objective: To compare the effects of the Mindful Recovery Opioid Use Disorder Care Continuum (M-ROCC) vs active control among adults receiving buprenorphine for OUD.

Age at Menopause and Development of Type 2 Diabetes in Korea.

Importance: There is limited evidence regarding the association between age at menopause and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective: To investigate whether age at menopause and premature menopause are associated with T2D incidence in postmenopausal Korean women.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This population-based cohort study was conducted among a nationally representative sample from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database of 1 125 378 postmenopausal women without T2D who enrolled in 2009.

Importance: Autoantibodies targeting astrocytes, such as those against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) or aquaporin protein 4, are crucial diagnostic markers for autoimmune astrocytopathy among central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune disorders. However, diagnosis remains challenging for patients lacking specific autoantibodies.

Objective: To characterize a syndrome of unknown meningoencephalomyelitis associated with an astrocytic autoantibody.

The Landscape of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Inhibition in Retinal Diseases.

Ever since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonist 2 decades ago, inhibitors of VEGF have revolutionized the treatment of a variety of ocular disorders involving pathologic neovascularization and retinal exudation. In this perspective, we evaluate the current status of anti-VEGF therapies and the real-world challenges encountered with maintaining therapeutic outcomes. Finally, we describe novel VEGF-based and combinatorial approaches that are in clinical development.

Fundus Autofluorescence Variation in Geographic Atrophy of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Clinicopathologic Correlation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop ground-truth histology about contributors to variable fundus autofluorescence (FAF) signal and thus inform patient selection for treating geographic atrophy (GA) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods: One woman with bilateral multifocal GA, foveal sparing, and thick choroids underwent 535 to 580 nm excitation FAF in 6 clinic visits (11 to 6 years before death). The left eye was preserved 5 hours after death.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a previous study in which 198 episodic and chronic migraine patients were assessed during all phases of the migraine cycle. Pressure pain threshold (PPT) was assessed over the temporalis, cervical spine, hand, and leg.

Background: Frail elderly patients have a higher risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Prehabilitation is a potential intervention for optimizing postoperative outcomes in frail patients. However, the specific pathways and molecular mechanisms associated with GDF15 expression during MASH development remain to be fully investigated in humans.

A novel ubiquitination-related gene signature for overall survival prediction in patients with liver hepatocellular carcinoma.

Liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) is a highly heterogeneous disease, necessitating the discovery of novel biomarkers to enhance individualized treatment approaches. Recent research has shown the significant involvement of ubiquitin-related genes (UbRGs) in the progression of LIHC. However, the prognostic value of UbRGs in LIHC has not been investigated.

Diagnostic Value of Serum miR-499a-5p in Chinese Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of miR-499a-5p in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and its value in early diagnosis of ASD. This is a retrospective case-control study that included 40 children with ASD as a case group and 43 healthy children as a control group. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on all subjects, and the children were scored with childhood autism rating scale (CARS) and autism behavior checklist (ABC).

Aneurysmal rupture in microscopic polyangiitis: a case-based review.

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) affects small and medium vessel, which sometimes leads to arterial aneurysms. In English database, only 15 reports refer to ruptured aneurysms in MPA. We experienced a fatal case with MPA who developed multiple visceral aneurysms, resulting in rupture of the hepatic aneurysm.

Background: Nucleolar protein 7 (NOL7), a specific protein found in the nucleolus, is crucial for maintaining cell division and proliferation. While the involvement of NOL7 in influencing the unfavorable prognosis of metastatic melanoma has been reported, its significance in predicting the prognosis of patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear.

Methods: Aberrant expression of NOL7 in HCC and its prognostic value were evaluated using multiple databases, including TCGA, GTEx, Xiantao Academic, HCCDB, UALCAN, TISCH, and STRING.

Anti-cancer effect of midazolam via downregulating YWHAH in papillary thyroid cancer cells.

The work is aimed to investigate whether midazolam functions in thyroid cancer and reveal the potential mechanism of action. Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 method when treated by varying doses of midazolam to detect the cytotoxicity of midazolam on human thyroid follicular epithelial cell line and thyroid cancer cell lines. In thyroid cancer cells, EDU staining, wound healing and transwell assays were respectively used to detect cell proliferation, migration and invasion.

Efficacy of prophylactic laxatives against opioid-induced constipation: retrospective propensity score matching analysis.

Purpose: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is problematic for patients with cancer receiving opioid therapy. Some guidelines recommend initiating regular laxatives at the same time as opioid analgesics. However, the effectiveness of prophylactic laxatives on OIC has not been widely demonstrated.
