Accurate identification of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles is essential for various clinical and research applications, such as transplant matching and drug sensitivities. Recent advances in RNA-seq technology have made it possible to impute HLA types from sequencing data, spurring the development of a large number of computational HLA typing tools. However, the relative performance of these tools is unknown, limiting the ability for clinical and biomedical research to make informed choices regarding which tools to use.

Purpose: Although efficacious, intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy regimens for neovascular age-related macular degeneration can prove difficult for patients to adhere to because of high cost and burden of transportation.
Methods: Analysis of electronic health record data from the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center eye clinic (January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019) was performed, extracting demographic data, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injection history, and enrollment in the SFVA travel benefit program. Two-tailed P -values were calculated for Poisson regression examining average number of injections per year as the outcome and distance traveled as the primary predictor.

The TASK-1 channel belongs to the two-pore domain potassium channel family. It is expressed in several cells of the heart, including the right atrial (RA) cardiomyocytes and the sinus node, and TASK-1 channel has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atrial arrhythmias (AA). Thus, using the rat model of monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension (MCT-PH), we explored the involvement of TASK-1 in AA.

The current Monkeypox (MPXV) outbreak has put evidence the worrisome trend of an increased prevalence of other sexually transmitted infections (STDs) particularly in the group of Men who have sex with men (MSM). This phenomenon is illustrated through the case of a 24-year-old male living with HIV that after attending a party where potentially unprotected sex was performed developed a painful popular perianal rash. Laboratory examinations performed confirmed the presence of an acute MPXV infection and primary syphilis, receiving pain relief medication and antibiotics with a rapid control of both illnesses.

Background: In 2021, WHO Member States endorsed a global target of a 40-percentage-point increase in effective refractive error coverage (eREC; with a 6/12 visual acuity threshold) by 2030. This study models global and regional estimates of eREC as a baseline for the WHO initiative.
Methods: The Vision Loss Expert Group analysed data from 565 448 participants of 169 population-based eye surveys conducted since 2000 to calculate eREC (met need/[met need + undermet need + unmet need]).
Purpose: This study aimed to analyse the evolution of uterine scar thickness after open fetal surgery for myelomeningocele (MMC) by ultrasonography, and to establish a cut-off point for uterine scar thickness associated with high-risk of uterine rupture.
Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted with 77 pregnant women who underwent open fetal surgery for MMC between 24 and 27 weeks of gestation. After fetal surgery, ultrasound follow-up was performed once a week, and the scar on the uterine wall was evaluated and its thickness was measured by transabdominal ultrasound.

Schizophrenia is frequently associated with obesity, which is linked with neurostructural alterations. Yet, we do not understand how the brain correlates of obesity map onto the brain changes in schizophrenia. We obtained MRI-derived brain cortical and subcortical measures and body mass index (BMI) from 1260 individuals with schizophrenia and 1761 controls from 12 independent research sites within the ENIGMA-Schizophrenia Working Group.

Some studies have described that when the hemoglobin levels of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients change, especially in those taking erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA), they are associated with unfavorable outcomes such as increased morbidity and mortality, mainly due to cardiovascular events. This prospective cohort study included patients with end-stage renal disease currently undergoing hemodialysis. The initial 6-month clinical evaluation provided data of the variability in hemoglobin, associated blood parameters, and the use of erythropoietin.

Long QT syndrome type 3 (LQT-3) is a disease related to abnormal cardiac sodium channel function (Nav 1.5), usually due to augmented late sodium current (I ), and may lead to ventricular fibrillation. Amiodarone is approved for ventricular fibrillation.

Aims: Clinical guidelines recommend early intravenous β-blockers during ongoing myocardial infarction; however, it is unknown whether all β-blockers exert a similar cardioprotective effect. We experimentally compared three clinically approved intravenous β-blockers.
Methods And Results: Mice undergoing 45 min/24 h ischaemia-reperfusion (I/R) received vehicle, metoprolol, atenolol, or propranolol at min 35.

This study aims to assess interrelationships between serum lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) concentrations in pregnant women in their third trimester and umbilical cord blood, while inter-metal correlations were also determined. This study is part of the PIPA project (Childhood and Environmental Pollutant Project), whose pilot study was carried out from October 2017 to August 2018 and will be presented here. Blood samples were obtained from 117 mother-umbilical cord pairs and analyzed concerning metal concentrations.

Background/aim: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most prevalent type of cancer in adults. Surgery remains the golden-standard treatment for this disease. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), a surgical technique, is based on the three-dimensional histopathological examination of the margin and surgical bed, layer by layer, in the excised tissue allowing for the determination of the location of the residual tumor, for its complete excision, with high cure rates and preservation of the unaffected tissue.

Aims: Amiodarone (AMIO) is currently used in medical practice to reverse ventricular tachycardia. Here we determine the effects of AMIO in the electromechanical properties of isolated left ventricle myocyte (LVM) from mice and guinea pig and in a cellular model of Long QT Syndrome Type 3 (LQTS-3) using anemone neurotoxin 2 (ATX II), which induces increase of late sodium current in LVM.
Main Methods And Key Findings: Using patch-clamp technique, fluorescence imaging to detect cellular Ca transient and sarcomere detection systems we evaluate the effect of AMIO in healthy LVM.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), the clustering of metabolic risk factors, is associated with cardiovascular disease risk. We sought to determine if dysregulation of the lipidome may contribute to metabolic risk factors.
Methods: We measured 154 circulating lipid species in 658 participants from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and tested for associations with obesity, dysglycemia, and dyslipidemia.

This study analyzed the efficacy of autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in maintaining and recovering cell viability of the periodontal ligament (PDL). The PDL cells were isolated from 45 extracted teeth randomly distributed among 6 groups: 5 min, 1 h, 2 h, PRF 30 min, PRF 1 h and PRF 2 h. In the groups 5 min, 1 h and 2 h (n = 5), the teeth were kept dry in extra-alveolar times of 5 min, 1 h and 2 h respectively.

The objective of this article is to review the basis supporting the usefulness of melatonin as an adjuvant therapy for breast cancer (BC) prevention in several groups of individuals at high risk for this disease. Melatonin, as a result of its antiestrogenic and antioxidant properties, as well as its ability to improve the efficacy and reduce the side effects of conventional antiestrogens, could safely be associated with the antiestrogenic drugs presently in use. In individuals at risk of BC due to night shift work, the light-induced inhibition of melatonin secretion, with the consequent loss of its antiestrogenic effects, would be countered by administering this neurohormone.
