Study Question: Compared to the 'single biopsy + single vitrification' approach, do 'double biopsy + double vitrification' or 'single biopsy + double vitrification' arrangements compromise subsequent clinical outcomes following euploidy blastocyst transfer?

Summary Answer: Both 'double biopsy + double vitrification' and 'single biopsy + double vitrification' led to reduced live birth/ongoing pregnancy rates and clinical pregnancy rates.

What Is Known Already?: It is not uncommon to receive inconclusive results following blastocyst biopsy and preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). Often these blastocysts are warmed for re-test after a second biopsy, experiencing 'double biopsy + double vitrification'.

Optimizing Resistance Training for Sprint and Endurance Athletes: Balancing Positive and Negative Adaptations.

Sports Med

December 2024

Centre for Human Performance, School of Medical and Health Sciences, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, Australia.

Resistance training (RT) triggers diverse morphological and physiological adaptations that are broadly considered beneficial for performance enhancement as well as injury risk reduction. Some athletes and coaches therefore engage in, or prescribe, substantial amounts of RT under the assumption that continued increments in maximal strength capacity and/or muscle mass will lead to improved sports performance. In contrast, others employ minimal or no RT under the assumption that RT may impair endurance or sprint performances.

Purpose: Chronic pain is a complex biopsychosocial experience, and rehabilitation helps people to manage pain, and restore valued life roles. Evidence suggests that more positive outcomes occur when clients perceive their rehabilitation to be meaningful. People with chronic pain describe rehabilitation as personally-meaningful when they develop a genuine connection with a credible therapist who they see as a guiding partner, and when rehabilitation holds personal value, is self-defined, and relevant to their sense of self-identity.

Background And Objective: An array of treatment-related toxicities result from androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa), compromising function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Exercise has been demonstrated to counter a number of these adverse effects including decreased HRQoL; however, when exercise should be initiated is less clear. This study aims to examine whether commencing exercise when ADT is initiated rather than later during treatment is more effective in countering adverse effects on HRQoL.

Purpose: We compared voluntary drive and corticospinal responses during eccentric (ECC), isometric (ISOM) and concentric (CON) muscle contractions to shed light on neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning the lower voluntary drive in a greater force production in ECC than other contractions.

Methods: Sixteen participants (20-33 years) performed ISOM and isokinetic (30°/s) CON and ECC knee extensor contractions (110°-40° knee flexion) in which electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded from vastus lateralis. Voluntary activation (VA) was measured during ISOM, CON and ECC maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate whether adding creatine supplementation to resistance exercise could offer more benefits for men with prostate cancer undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) than resistance exercise alone, particularly in terms of lean mass, strength, and physical function.
  • - Conducted over 12 weeks with 30 participants, the trial compared two groups: one performing resistance exercise with a placebo and the other with creatine, both achieving significant improvements in lean mass, muscle strength, and physical function.
  • - The results showed that while both groups experienced similar improvements in the measured outcomes, there were no significant differences between the groups, suggesting that creatine supplementation doesn't provide additional benefits over resistance exercise alone.

Sex differences in quantitative ultrasonographic measurements of the rectus femoris in children.

J Anat

January 2025

Exercise Research Laboratory, Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Dance School, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The distribution and amount of intramuscular fat and fibrous tissue can be influenced by biological sex and impact muscle quality in both the functional (force-generating capacity) and morphological (muscle composition) domains. While ultrasonography (US) has proven effective in assessing age- or sex-related differences in muscle quality, limited information is available on sex differences in children. Quantitative ultrasonographic measurements, such as echo intensity (EI), EI bands (number of pixels across 50-unit intervals) and texture, may offer a comprehensive framework for identifying sex differences in muscle composition.
