Delayed brain metastasis after 17-years from papillary thyroid cancer without local recurrence: case report and literature review.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common malignancy originating from the thyroid, with a good overall prognosis. However, distant metastasis of such lesions is very rare, with the brain being an incredibly uncommon site for secondary spread. The authors report a case of PTC brain metastasis 17-years after successful treatment of the primary malignancy, with no local or locoregional recurrence.

Infected cephalhaematoma causing osteomyelitis: case report and literature review.

Infected cephalhaematomas are rare and can lead to complications such as sepsis, meningitis and osteomyelitis. We present an infected cephalhaematoma in a neonate with resultant underlying osteomyelitis and a review of the literature. Our patient presented 6 days following birth with a fever and a swelling consistent with cephalhaematoma.

A repeat pattern of founder events for SARS-CoV-2 variants in Alaska.

Alaska is a unique US state because of its large size, geographically disparate population density, and physical distance from the contiguous United States. Here, we describe a pattern of SARS-CoV-2 variant emergence across Alaska reflective of these differences. Using genomic data, we found that in Alaska the Omicron sublineage BA.

Impact of Patient Navigation on Population-Based Breast Screening: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials.

Background: Unsatisfactory cancer screening results are often associated with poor prognosis. This study synthesized the literatures addressing the impact of patient navigation (PN) interventions on population-based breast cancer screening promotion to identify characteristics of the model for addressing breast cancer disparities.

Methods: We searched Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Registry from inception to 31 December 2020 for randomized controlled trials (PROSPERO: CRD42021246890).

Clinical frailty and performance scale translation in palliative care: scoping review.

Background: Frailty is associated with advancing age and increases the risk of adverse outcomes and death. Routine assessment of frailty is becoming more common in a number of healthcare settings, but not in palliative care, where performance scales (eg, the Australia-modified Karnofsky Performance Status Scale (AKPS)) are more commonly employed. A shared understanding of performance and frailty measures could aid interspecialty collaboration in both end-of-life care research and clinical practice.

Assessment of clinical trial protocols for pathology content using the SPIRIT-Path guidelines highlights areas for improvement.

The SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) 2013 Statement provides evidence-based recommendations for the minimum content of clinical trial protocols. The Cellular Molecular Pathology Initiative, hosted by the UK National Cancer Research Institute, developed an extension, SPIRIT-Path, describing how to effectively incorporate pathology support into clinical trial protocols. The current study assessed the inclusion of SPIRIT-Path items in protocols of active clinical trials.

The role of cytokines and their antagonists in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has various presentations, of which immune dysregulation or the so-called cytokine storm syndrome (COVID-CSS) is prominent. Even though cytokines are vital regulators of body immunoinflammatory responses, their exaggerated release can be harmful. This hyperinflammatory response is more commonly observed during severe COVID-19 infections, caused by the excessive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-8, tumour necrosis factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, and interferon-gamma, making their blockers and antagonists of great interest as therapeutic options in this condition.

Maternal pregnancy outcomes in women with cardiomyopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: This study aimed to systematically assess the impact of cardiomyopathy on maternal pregnancy outcomes.

Data Sources: PubMed, Ovid Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were systematically searched from inception to April 24, 2022.

The effect of propolis on 5-fluorouracil-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is one of the most common chemotherapeutic agents used in treating solid tumors, and the 5-FU-induced cardiotoxicity is the second cause of cardiotoxicity induced by chemotherapeutic drugs. Propolis (Pro) has vigorous anti-inflammatory activity. Its cardio-protective characteristic against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity was previously proven.

Medical Student Perspectives on Undergraduate Oncology Education in the UK.

Aims: The British Oncology Network for Undergraduate Societies (BONUS) surveyed students who attended an oncology revision day to determine their views on the current quantity, quality and type of curriculum-based oncology teaching they have experienced.

Materials And Methods: Students attending two BONUS revision days received a questionnaire assessing their experience of oncology teaching within the medical curriculum and interest in pursuing a future career in oncology using a 10-point Likert scale. Data were collected with informed consent to be anonymised and used for research.

Central diabetes insipidus secondary to COVID-19 infection: a case report.

Background: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mainly affects the lungs, but can involve several other organs. The diagnosis of acute and chronic sequelae is one of the challenges of COVID-19. The current literature proposes that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may involve the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

A computational model of stereoscopic prey capture in praying mantises.

We present a simple model which can account for the stereoscopic sensitivity of praying mantis predatory strikes. The model consists of a single "disparity sensor": a binocular neuron sensitive to stereoscopic disparity and thus to distance from the animal. The model is based closely on the known behavioural and neurophysiological properties of mantis stereopsis.

Patient Priorities in Autoimmune Hepatitis: The Need for Better Treatments, More Education and Challenging Stigma.

Background: Data show that patients with autoimmune hepatitis have significantly reduced quality-of-life and that corticosteroids carry marked side effects.

Aims: This study explored patients' experiences of autoimmune hepatitis and its treatments; key aspects for developing safe and effective new approaches to therapy.

Methods: An anonymised, internet-based survey collected data including patient demographics, treatments, side-effects, impact on day-to-day life, sources of support and attitudes towards autoimmune hepatitis between December 2019-January 2020.

Perceptions and Correlates of Distress Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Stress Management Strategies Among Adults With Diabetes: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Background: Greater risk of adverse health outcomes and public health measures have increased distress among people with diabetes during the coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The objectives of this study were to explore how the experiences of people with diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic differ according to sociodemographic characteristics and identify diabetes-related psychosocial correlates of COVID distress.

Methods: Patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes were recruited from clinics and community health centres in Toronto, Ontario, as well as patient networks.

'Excited Delirium', acute behavioural disturbance, death and diagnosis.

In the 1980s the traditional Hippocratic term excited delirium was transplanted from the bedsides of febrile, agitated and disoriented patients to the streets of Miami. Deaths in custody of young men who were intoxicated with cocaine and who were restrained by the police because of their erratic or violent behaviour were attributed to excited delirium. The blood concentrations of cocaine in these subjects were approximately ten times lower than the lethal level and other factors which might have contributed to the fatal outcome, such as the police use of neck-holds, choke-holds or 'hog-tying', were relegated to a minor role compared with the reframed 'diagnosis' of excited delirium.

Artificial intelligence and medical education: A global mixed-methods study of medical students' perspectives.

Objective: Medical students, as clinicians and healthcare leaders of the future, are key stakeholders in the clinical roll-out of artificial intelligence-driven technologies. The authors aim to provide the first report on the state of artificial intelligence in medical education globally by exploring the perspectives of medical students.

Methods: The authors carried out a mixed-methods study of focus groups and surveys with 128 medical students from 48 countries.

COVID-19 vaccination challenges: A mini-review.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to the infection of many people across the globe, over six million deaths, and has placed an unprecedented burden on public health worldwide. The pandemic has led to the high-speed development and production of vaccines against the COVID-19, as vaccines can end the pandemic. At the beginning of the program, vaccinations were initially targeted only at high-risk groups, such as the elderly, those with comorbidities, or healthcare workers.

Anti-stigma training and positive changes in mental illness stigma outcomes in medical students in ten countries: a mediation analysis on pathways via empathy development and anxiety reduction.

Purpose: Studies of mental illness stigma reduction interventions have been criticised for failing to evaluate behavioural outcomes and mechanisms of action. This project evaluates training for medical students entitled 'Responding to Experienced and Anticipated Discrimination' (READ), developed to focus on skills in addition to attitudes and knowledge. We aimed to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of READ with respect to knowledge, attitudes, and clinical communication skills in responding to mental illness-related discrimination, and (ii) investigate whether its potential effectiveness was mediated via empathy or/and intergroup anxiety.

The epidemiology and long-term outcomes of acute kidney disease in a resource-limited setting.

Background: The concept of acute kidney disease (AKD) implies kidney damage that results in a significant decrease in glomerular filtration rate, including acute kidney injury (AKI), but that is not persistent enough to meet the criteria of chronic kidney disease (CKD). While a few studies have shown associations between AKD and the risk of adverse outcomes, there is still a lack of evidence from resource-limited settings.

There is a need to identify suitable platforms for community engagement to promote locally feasible, resource efficient Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) interventions. This study aims to explore if and how schools could represent a site for community engagement in rural India, acting as innovation hubs to foster positive change in partnership with the Angawadi centres.
