Do we miss rare adverse events induced by COVID-19 vaccination?

Front Med (Lausanne)

October 2022

Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Research Center, Health Research Institute, Babol University of Medical Sciences, Babol, Iran.

Although severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has caused many complications, the invention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines has also brought about several adverse events, from common side effects to unexpected and rare ones. Common vaccine-related adverse reactions manifest locally or systematically following any vaccine, including COVID-19 vaccines. Specific side effects, known as adverse events of particular interest (AESI), are unusual and need more evaluation.

Incidence of stillbirth: effect of deprivation.

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol

February 2023

Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, King's College Hospital, London, UK.

Objectives: To examine the relationship between the English index of multiple deprivation (IMD) and the incidence of stillbirth and assess whether IMD contributes to the prediction of stillbirth provided by the combination of maternal demographic characteristics and elements of medical history.

Methods: This was a prospective, observational study of 159 125 women with a singleton pregnancy who attended their first routine hospital visit at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks' gestation in two maternity hospitals in the UK. The inclusion criterion was delivery at ≥ 24 weeks' gestation of a fetus without major abnormality.

Article Synopsis
  • Craniopharyngiomas are typically benign tumors located in the brain's suprasellar region, but this case involves a rare and aggressive form that spread to the spine.
  • A 67-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer experienced severe neurological symptoms, and MRI scans showed a rapidly growing tumor that required surgical intervention and further analysis.
  • Despite surgery, the patient underwent palliative care and passed away four months later, underscoring the importance of accurate histological diagnosis for effective treatment of such complex cases.

Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify the changes of myocardial gene expression profile after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation and the related molecular biological significance.

Methods: A thorough bioinformatic analysis to evaluate the changes in gene expression profile in patients pre-LVAD and post-LVAD was conducted. Four relevant gene expression datasets-GSE430, GSE974, GSE21610, and GSE52601 from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were downloaded.

Purpose: Pes planus (or flatfoot) is the most common deformity in children with cerebral palsy. There are several surgical interventions used to treat it: single calcaneal osteotomies, extra-articular arthrodesis, double calcaneal osteotomy, calcaneo-cuboid-cuneiform osteotomy, intra-articular arthrodesis, and arthroereisis. There is currently no evidence on optimal treatment for flatfoot in children with cerebral palsy.

Indigenous peoples in the United States experience many health disparities and barriers to accessing health care services. In addition, Indigenous communities experience poor social drivers of health, including disproportionately high rates of food insecurity, violence, and poverty, among others. These challenges are unsurprising, given historical societal discrimination toward Indigenous peoples and government policies of violence, forced relocation with loss of ancestral home, and erasure of cultures and traditions.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases. Its pathological spectrum includes the overlapping stages of hepatic steatosis/steatohepatitis that can progress to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis; both are risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma. Moreover, ALD diagnosis and management pose several challenges.

Purpose: Detecting and distinguishing metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) from those with benign lymphadenopathy are crucial for cancer diagnosis and prognosis but remain a clinical challenge. A recent advance in super-resolution ultrasound (SRUS) through localizing individual microbubbles has broken the diffraction limit and tracking enabled in vivo noninvasive imaging of vascular morphology and flow dynamics at a microscopic level. In this study we hypothesize that SRUS enables quantitative markers to distinguish metastatic LNs from benign ones in patients with lymphadenopathy.

Congenital myopathies are a group of early onset muscle diseases of variable severity often with characteristic muscle biopsy findings and involvement of specific muscle types. The clinical diagnosis of patients typically relies on histopathological findings and is confirmed by genetic analysis. The most commonly mutated genes encode proteins involved in skeletal muscle excitation-contraction coupling, calcium regulation, sarcomeric proteins and thin-thick filament interaction.

Purpose: Surgical pyloroplasty or pyloromyotomy are often performed during esophagectomy with a view of improving gastric conduit drainage. However, the clinical importance of this is not clear, and some centers opt to omit this step. The aim of this meta-analysis is to compare the rates of pulmonary complications, anastomotic leak, mortality, delayed gastric emptying, and the need for further pyloric intervention, in patients undergoing esophagectomy with and without a drainage procedure.

Electronic address:

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem with serious long-term complications. In children, the definition of osteoporosis is not only based on densitometric criteria but also takes into account vertebral and long bone fragility fractures. Several factors, such as long-term high-dose steroids, chronic inflammation, malnutrition, immobility, lack of sex steroids, and medication can reduce bone density and increase the risk for fragility fractures when left untreated.
