Trends in research grant applications and outcomes among medical students in the United Kingdom: a national self-reported cross-sectional survey.

Background: Research funding disparities contribute to clinical academic workforce inequalities. Hence, our study explores the association between student demographics and research grant application rates and outcomes among UK medical students.

Methods: This is a national multicentre cross-sectional survey of UK medical students in the 2020-21 academic year.

Neurophobia Among Medical Students: Is Virtual Teaching the Answer?

Objective: Neurophobia is well recognized as dissuading medical students from neurocentric specialties and limiting the success of neurology and neurosurgery teaching at medical school. Past studies have associated neurophobia with deficiencies in medical education. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of medical students' confidence and perceived level of knowledge in recognizing the following neurosurgical and neurological emergencies: ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, status epilepticus, subarachnoid hemorrhage, increased intracranial pressure, acute hydrocephalus, spinal cord injury, cauda equina syndrome, and traumatic brain injury.

'They say': medical students' perceptions of General Practice, experiences informing these perceptions, and their impact on career intention-a qualitative study among medical students in England.

Objectives: The number of UK graduates choosing General Practice training remains significantly lower than the current numbers required to meet the demands of the service. This work aims to explore medical students' perceptions of General Practice, experiences which lead to the development of these perceptions, and the ultimate impact of these on career intention.

Design: This mixed-methods, qualitative study used focus groups, semistructured interviews, longitudinal audio diary data and debrief interviews to explore and capture the experiences and perceptions of students in their first and penultimate years of university.

The 'Kidney' model for optimising feedback in undergraduate clinical communication: A meta-ethnographic systematic review.

Objectives: Feedback frameworks/models focus on certain aspects of the feedback process, but a coherent and systematic model is lacking. A meta-ethnography was conducted to identify and synthesise guidance for optimising feedback interactions in undergraduate clinical communication simulations.

Methods: A systematic search of 4 electronic databases and grey literature was conducted.

#Anatomynotes: A temporal content analysis of anatomy education posts on Instagram.

Social media platforms such as Instagram are becoming increasingly popular sources for students to access anatomy educational resources. This review used content analysis to examine posts under the hashtag #anatomynotes and is the first to map the characteristics of anatomy education posts on Instagram and determine any temporal changes. Sample posts were gathered from April 2019 and April 2021 and categorized according to the technical format, purpose and author credentials.

Crossover design in triage education: the effectiveness of simulated interactive vs. routine training on student nurses' performance in a disaster situation.

Introduction: This study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating simulated interactive guidelines in nursing students' performance during disaster situations, compared to routine training.

Method: This study was a crossover design with pre-and post-tests for two groups. Each group consisted of 60 students selected using the census method.

VENUM (Vascular Education iN Undergraduate Medicine): a multicentre evaluation of undergraduate vascular education in the UK.

Introduction: Vascular surgery is a recognised surgical subspecialty covering an array of circulatory conditions predominately affecting geriatric and diabetic patients. As such, a wide breadth of clinicians will see patients with vascular pathologies, but it is unclear how detailed their knowledge base is. Key to this is the education of medical students, which has been poorly documented during undergraduate training in the UK.

SMS text intervention for uncontrolled hypertension among hypertensive homeless adults in shelter clinics of New York City: protocol for a pragmatic randomised trial study.

Introduction: Uncontrolled hypertension (HTN) is prevalent in persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) and contributes to significant suffering and financial cost. Mobile health approaches such as short messaging service (SMS) texting have led to better control of HTN in the general population. Despite the high utilisation of mobile phones by PEH, SMS texting to support HTN control has not been evaluated among this population.

Effectiveness of Gamification in Enhancing Learning and Attitudes: A Study of Statistics Education for Health School Students.

Introduction: Gamification is the use of game design elements in non-game contexts. It is considered a student-centered instructional design to motivate student learning and academic behavior. In this study, the effects of gamification on learning statistics (hypothesis testing issue) and attitude toward statistics in comparison with the common e-learning approach were investigated.

Neurosurgical Education Using Cadaver-Free Brain Models and Augmented Reality: First Experiences from a Hands-On Simulation Course for Medical Students.

: Neurosurgery has been underrepresented in the medical school curriculum. Advances in augmented reality and 3D printing have opened the way for early practical training through simulations. We assessed the usability of the UpSurgeOn simulation-based training model and report first experiences from a hands-on neurosurgery course for medical students.

Translation and psychometric evaluation of the reflective capacity scale in Iranian medical education.

Background: Examining the reflective capacity in medical students is a principal step for the development of effective educational strategies to improve it. Reflection scales available in Iran are inadequate due to the lack of focus on students' willingness and tendency to participate in reflection. This study aimed at translation and psychometric evaluation of "Reflective Capacity Scale" in Iranian medical education.

Role of Rapamycin and 3-MA in oxidative damage of HLECs caused by two doses of UVB radiation.

Background: This study compared the role of autophagy regulators Rapamycin and 3-MA in oxidative damage and apoptosis of human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) caused by two doses of Ultraviolet Radiation B (UVB).

Methods: HLECs were irradiated with UVB, and two doses of UVB damage models were constructed. After treatment with autophagy regulators, cell damage tests such as CCK-8, LDH activity, and Ros detection were performed.

Care and three-year outcomes of children with Benign Epilepsy with Centro-Temporal Spikes in England.

Purpose: Benign Epilepsy with Centro-Temporal Spikes (BECTS) is a pediatric epilepsy with typically good seizure control. Although BECTS may increase patients' risk of developing neurological comorbidities, their clinical care and short-term outcomes are poorly quantified.

Methods: We retrospectively assessed adherence to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines relating to specialist referral, electroencephalogram (EEG) conduct and annual review in the care of patients with BECTS, and measured their seizure, neurodevelopmental and learning outcomes at three years post-diagnosis.

Empagliflozin treatment of cardiotoxicity: A comprehensive review of clinical, immunobiological, neuroimmune, and therapeutic implications.

Cancer and cardiovascular disorders are known as the two main leading causes of mortality worldwide. Cardiotoxicity is a critical and common adverse effect of cancer-related chemotherapy. Chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity has been associated with various cancer treatments, such as anthracyclines, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and kinase inhibitors.

How will the Covid-19 pandemic shape the future of primary care undergraduate teaching? Understanding modifications and developments deployed by UK academic units of primary care, and their implications for the future.

Background: Primary care has been under-represented in its contribution to the academic literature base on Covid-19 developments. We sought to understand how teaching and learning was modified and developed by primary care academic leaders to support the continuation of primary care-orientated learning during the Covid-19 pandemic; and explore how these changes may shape future educational delivery in primary care.

Methods: We adopted a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews of seven General Practice Heads of Teaching (GP HoTs) from UK medical schools.

Biological, genetic and epigenetic markers in ulcerative colitis.

In this review, we have summarized the existing knowledge of ulcerative colitis (UC) markers based on current literature, specifically, the roles of potential new biomarkers, such as circulating, fecal, genetic, and epigenetic alterations, in UC onset, disease activity, and in therapy response. UC is a complex multifactorial inflammatory disease. There are many invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods in UC, including several laboratory markers which are employed in diagnosis and disease assessment; however, colonoscopy remains the most widely used method.

: It has been known for many years that in metazoan cells, replication origins are organised into clusters where origins within each cluster fire near-synchronously. Despite clusters being a fundamental organising principle of metazoan DNA replication, the genomic location of origin clusters has not been documented. : We synchronised human U2OS by thymidine block and release followed by L-mimosine block and release to create a population of cells progressing into S phase with a high degree of synchrony.

Clinical value of placental examination for paediatricians.

The placenta contains valuable clinical information that is linked to fetal development, neonatal morbidity and mortality, and future health outcomes. Both gross inspection and histopathological examination of the placenta may identify intrinsic or secondary placental lesions, which can contribute directly to adverse neonatal outcomes or indicate the presence of an unfavourable intrauterine environment. Placental examination therefore forms an essential component of the care of high-risk neonates and at perinatal post-mortem examination.

Feticide Before Termination of Pregnancy in Singleton Pregnancy - Trends in England and Wales 2012-2020, a Cross-sectional Study.

Feticide is the practice of inducing fetal demise before the termination of pregnancy. In England and Wales, it is recommended for terminations of pregnancy beyond 21+6 weeks of gestation. This project analyses the trends in feticide in singleton pregnancy in England and Wales between 2012 and 2020.

COVIDAssist: Exploring the perspectives on student assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: COVID-19 resulted in medical students volunteering to join the health care workforce. Our study aimed to evaluate the perception of clinical staff on the benefit of students' pandemic response. The secondary aims were to (i) evaluate medical students' team working skills, (ii) identify specialties where medical students were most effective, and (iii) identify areas for further training.
