Institute of Functional Genomics, CNRS UMR5203, INSERM U661, University of Montpellier, 141 rue de la Cardonille, 34094 cedex 05, France.

It is now accepted that vasopressin, through V/V receptors, centrally regulates cognitive functions such as memory, affiliation, stress, fear and depression. However, the respective roles of these receptor isoforms and their contribution to stress-related pathologies remain uncertain. The development of new therapeutic treatments requires a precise knowledge of the distribution of these receptors within the brain, which has been so far hampered by the lack of selective V markers.

Background: Abnormal maturation of brain connectivity is supposed to underlie the dysfunctional emotion regulation in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). To test this hypothesis, white matter integrity is usually investigated using measures of water diffusivity provided by MRI. Here we consider a more intuitive aspect of the morphometry of the white matter tracts: the shape of the fibre bundles, which is associated with neurodevelopment.

Stimulation of glucose transport is markedly impaired in cardiomyocytes exposed to free fatty acids (FFA), despite relative preservation of canonical insulin- or metabolic stress signaling. We determined whether Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) activity is required for stimulation of glucose transport in cardiomyocytes, and whether FAK downregulation participates in FFA-induced impairment of glucose transport stimulation. Glucose transport, measured in isolated cultured cardiomyocytes, was acutely stimulated either by insulin treatment, or by metabolic inhibition with oligomycin resulting in AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) activation.

Endovascular techniques for the management of wide-neck intracranial bifurcation aneurysms: A critical review of the literature.

J Neuroradiol

June 2016

Department of Neuroradiology and Endovascular Therapy, Jean-Minjoz Hospital, CHRU Besançon, Franche Comté University School of Medecine, Besançon, France.

Endovascular treatment is the first line treatment for intracranial aneurysms, but wide-neck aneurysms are often difficult to treat due to the difficulty in stabilizing the coils inside the aneurysm. It is singularly true for wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms (WNBA) as bifurcation branches often arise from the aneurysm neck. To overcome these difficulties, several approaches are available to treat both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms (balloon-assisted coiling and intra-aneurysmal flow disruption), while some techniques are essentially restricted to unruptured aneurysms due to the need of concomitant use of antiplatelet medications (stent-assisted coiling and flow diversion).

OBJECTIVE The authors evaluate the rate and discuss the pathomechanisms of very late (≥ 4-month) ischemic complications after flow-diverter stent (FDS) placement for intracranial aneurysms. METHODS The authors retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of the patients treated at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital between January 2010 and September 2014, who underwent FDS placement for intracranial aneurysm. The patients received dual-antiplatelet therapy (clopidogrel and aspirin) 5 days before and 3-6 months after the procedure and then aspirin alone for 6-9 months.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is linked to altered blood flow and high shear stress, yet the role of high shear stress on cells and vessels in PAH remains unclear.
  • Research showed that microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs) from PAH patients had delayed adaptation to high shear stress compared to control cells, causing injury and potential vascular remodeling, while pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (PAECs) did not exhibit this defect.
  • The study identifies impaired shear response as a unique dysfunction in PAH MVECs, with potential therapeutic implications, like stabilizing key proteins to restore responsiveness and reduce vascular issues in PAH models.

Rationale: Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are considered two primary instigators of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). CD74 is a receptor for the proinflammatory cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). This ligand/receptor complex initiates survival pathways and cell proliferation, and it triggers the synthesis and secretion of major proinflammatory factors and cell adhesion molecules.

The balance of effector and regulatory T cell function, dependent on multiple signals and epigenetic regulators, is critical to immune self-tolerance. Dysregulation of T helper 17 (Th17) effector cells is associated with multiple autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Here, we report that Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a protein deacetylase previously reported to have an antiinflammatory function, in fact promotes autoimmunity by deacetylating RORγt, the signature transcription factor of Th17 cells.

Background: Angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) blockers have beneficial effects on neurovascular complications in diabetes and in organ's protection against ischemic episodes. The present study examines whether the AT1R blocker candesartan (1) has a beneficial effect on diabetes-induced alteration of pressure-induced vasodilation (PIV, a cutaneous physiological neurovascular mechanism which could delay the occurrence of tissue ischemia), and (2) could be protective against skin pressure ulcer formation.

Methods: Male Swiss mice aged 5-6 weeks were randomly assigned to four experimental groups.

Cutaneous embolism of an atrial myxoma.

Australas J Dermatol

August 2015

Department of Dermatology, Westmead Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Cardiac myxoma often presents with heterogeneous symptoms and signs and represents a challenging diagnosis. The cutaneous manifestations, if present, are often transient and non-specific and the clinician must possess a high degree of suspicion to secure the diagnosis. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman with a 6-month history of intermittent, painful, violaceous, non-blanching macules on the thumb and fingertips of the left hand and right ankle.
