Vertical Jumping for Legged Robot Based on Quadratic Programming.

Sensors (Basel)

May 2021

School of Mechatronical Engineering, Intelligent Robotics Institute, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China.

The highly dynamic legged jumping motion is a challenging research topic because of the lack of established control schemes that handle over-constrained control objectives well in the stance phase, which are coupled and affect each other, and control robot's posture in the flight phase, in which the robot is underactuated owing to the foot leaving the ground. This paper introduces an approach of realizing the cyclic vertical jumping motion of a planar simplified legged robot that formulates the jump problem within a quadratic-programming (QP)-based framework. Unlike prior works, which have added different weights in front of control tasks to express the relative hierarchy of tasks, in our framework, the hierarchical quadratic programming (HQP) control strategy is used to guarantee the strict prioritization of the center of mass (CoM) in the stance phase while split dynamic equations are incorporated into the unified quadratic-programming framework to restrict the robot's posture to be near a desired constant value in the flight phase.

Internal OH induced cascade quenching of upconversion luminescence in NaYF:Yb/Er nanocrystals.

Light Sci Appl

May 2021

van't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam, Science Park 904, 1098XH, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Internal hydroxyl impurities significantly hinder the upconversion efficiency of luminescent nanomaterials, making them hard to quantify and control during synthesis.
  • Recent research has developed methods to measure and adjust these impurities in NaYF nanocrystals, linking UCL quenching to interactions between hydroxyls and the materials' activators.
  • The study introduces the "Survivor effect," suggesting that shorter excited state migration paths increase survival rates against quenching, supported by experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations.

Somatotopy is an important guiding principle for sensory fiber organization in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), which reflects tactile information processing and is associated with disease-related reorganization. However, it is difficult to measure the neuronal encoding scheme in S1 in vivo in normal participants. Here, we investigated the somatotopic map of the undominant hand using a Bayesian population receptive field (pRF) model.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? White matter lesions (WMLs) are a brain disease characterized by altered brain structural and functional connectivity, but findings have shown an inconsistent pattern: are there distinct cortical thickness changes in patients with WMLs subtypes? What is the main finding and its importance? Patients with WMLs with non-dementia vascular cognitive impairment and WMLs with vascular dementia showed distinct pathophysiology in cortical thickness. These neural correlates of WMLs should be considered in future treatment.

Abstract: The effect of cortical thickness on white matter lesions (WMLs) in patients with distinct vascular cognitive impairments is relatively unknown.

In vitro three-dimensional (3D) cellular models with native tissue-like architectures and functions have potential as alternatives to human tissues in regenerative medicine and drug discovery. However, it is difficult to replicate liver constructs that mimic in vivo microenvironments using current approaches in tissue engineering because of the vessel-embedded 3D structure and complex cell distribution of the liver. This paper reports a pulsed microflow-based on-chip 3D assembly method to construct 3D liver lobule-like models that replicate the spatial structure and functions of the liver lobule.

Previous findings have suggested that the cortex involved in walking control in freely locomotion rats. Moreover, the spectral characteristics of cortical activity showed significant differences in different walking conditions. However, whether brain connectivity presents a significant difference during rats walking under different behavior conditions has yet to be verified.

The spring-loaded inverted pendulum model is similar to human walking in terms of the center of mass (CoM) trajectory and the ground reaction force. It is thus widely used in humanoid robot motion planning. A method that uses a velocity feedback controller to adjust the landing point of a robot leg is inaccurate in the presence of disturbances and a nonlinear optimization method with multiple variables is complicated and thus unsuitable for real-time control.

Simulation of Upward Jump Control for One-Legged Robot Based on QP Optimization.

Sensors (Basel)

March 2021

School of Mechatronical Engineering, Intelligent Robotics Institute, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China.

An optimization framework for upward jumping motion based on quadratic programming (QP) is proposed in this paper, which can simultaneously consider constraints such as the zero moment point (ZMP), limitation of angular accelerations, and anti-slippage. Our approach comprises two parts: the trajectory generation and real-time control. In the trajectory generation for the launch phase, we discretize the continuous trajectories and assume that the accelerations between the two sampling intervals are constant and transcribe the problem into a nonlinear optimization problem.

Task-induced activation transmitted by structural connectivity is associated with behavioral performance.

Brain Struct Funct

June 2021

Intelligent Robotics Institute, School of Mechatronical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, 100081, China.

It is thought that brain structure is the primary determinant of functions of brain regions. For example, cortical areas with functional differences also have different structural connectivity (SC) patterns. We used SCs derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data in 100 healthy adults included in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) to successfully predict cortical activation responses across distinct cognitive tasks and found that predictive performance varied among tasks.

Shape-morphing uses a single actuation source for complex-task-oriented multiple patterns generation, showing a more promising way than reconfiguration, especially for microrobots, where multiple actuators are typically hardly available. Environmental stimuli can induce additional causes of shape transformation to compensate the insufficient space for actuators and sensors, which enriches the shape-morphing and thereby enhances the function and intelligence as well. Here, making use of the ionic sensitivity of alginate hydrogel microstructures, we present a shape-morphing strategy for microrobotic end-effectors made from them to adapt to different physiochemical environments.
