Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how social cohesion influences the formation of care collectives in response to the increased demand for care services in the Netherlands.
  • It argues that strong neighborhood attachment enhances the likelihood of citizens organizing mutual care efforts, especially where the need for care is high.
  • However, findings suggest that while neighborhood attachment is positively linked to care collectives, other factors like neighborhood contact do not show significant relations, and the study's causal inferences remain tentative.

The organization of sports events, while generating economic benefits, inevitably imposes significant environmental pressures. Conducting green and low-carbon sports events have become a global consensus. In addressing the carbon emissions and benefit coordination issues on the production end of infrastructure construction for large-scale sports events, we considers the significant role of digital platforms in the industry's low-carbon transformation and upgrade, and innovatively incorporates platforms as decision-making entities and investigates the equilibrium strategies for low-carbon cooperation under three different power structures: one led by the sports events materials supplier, one by the materials distributor, and one by the integrated service platform.

Strategic uniqueness seeking: A cultural perspective.

J Pers Soc Psychol

December 2024

Johnson Graduate School of Management, SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University.

Building on the perspectives reflected in the Western intellectual tradition of the psychology of identity and the self, current research in cultural psychology tends to conceptualize uniqueness preferences as reflecting an identity-based motive and argues that people in Western cultures value uniqueness because it is viewed as inherently important to their identity and individuality. In this research, we introduce a complementary Eastern perspective to understand uniqueness preferences and argue that uniqueness preferences can also reflect a strategic motive where people in East Asian cultures may also value uniqueness because of the instrumental material and social benefits they believe uniqueness may confer. We tested our propositions in nine preregistered studies contrasting the decision making of people in the United States with those in China.

The vicious cycle of status insecurity.

J Pers Soc Psychol

December 2024

Department of Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.

The current research presents and tests a new model: The Vicious Cycle of Status Insecurity. We define status insecurity as doubting whether one is respected and admired by others. Status insecurity leads people to view status as a limited and zero-sum resource, where a boost in the status of one individual inherently decreases that of other individuals.

" Assets Supporting Resilience of Older Adults and Their Communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Can J Aging

December 2024

Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ONK1N 6N5, Canada.

Despite societal perceptions of older adults as vulnerable, literature on resilience suggests that exposure to adversity and resources gained with life experience contribute to adaptation. One way to explore the nature of resilience is to document assets supporting adaptation. Interviews were conducted with older adults living in Canada at two time points during the COVID-19 pandemic, September 2020-May 2021 (T1) and January-August 2022 (T2).

Editorial: Identifying the Perfect Predictor of Absence of Disease: A Shift Toward Necessary Condition Analysis in Evidence-Based Medicine?

J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry

November 2024

Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

One of the challenges of evidence-based medicine is balancing population-level findings with individualized care. Average treatment effect studies, including cohort studies and randomized controlled trials, offer insights into factors affecting disease likelihood at group level or subgroup level (precision medicine), but are limited in predicting individual outcomes. This limitation arises because average treatment effect studies operate within a probabilistic causal framework, indicating how likely a disease is when a certain individual or contextual factor is present: if X, then probably Y.

The construction sector, as the prime culprit that aggravates greenhouse gas emissions, has initiated transitions in construction methods for emissions abatement. In such a context, prefabricated construction has been widely promoted in developing countries. This paper assesses the effects of three environmental policies: carbon tax, green subsidy, and unit subsidy on carbon allocation and emissions abatement of prefabricated construction supply chain (PCSC) consisting of a prefab manufacturer (PM) and a project developer (PD).

The rising incidences of myocardial infarction (MI), often affecting individuals without traditional risk factors, highlight the urgent need for improved early detection using personal health data. However, health surveys and electronic health records (EHRs) frequently suffer from class imbalances, leading to prediction biases and differences between specificity and sensitivity, which hinder reliable model development despite the valuable insights contained in these datasets. To address this, we have introduced a novel approach to enhance MI risk prediction using self-reported attributes from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) dataset.

Despite well-documented scepticism among Western consumers about eating insects, there are groups of potential early adopters who will form the initial market for insect-based food. Understanding the different preferences of these potential early adopters is key to developing effective targeted marketing actions. This study aimed to identify segments of potential early adopters and their distinct product attribute preferences.

The low-carbon transformation of China's economy is urgent, and the innovation of core technologies related to it cannot be without financial support. Given the limited availability of green funding, it is imperative to seek the help of social funding more widely. Among them, the impact of institutional ownership (IO) on the green total factor productivity (GTFP) at micro level cannot be ignored.

November 2024

School of Economics and Management, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China.

In modern firms, conflicts may arise between the chief executive officer and board of directors due to the separation of ownership and operations. Such conflicts may weaken listed companies' performance in the short term or affect their development in the long term. Using data on Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2022, this study empirically examines the impact of internal control quality on boardroom backscratching.

Article Synopsis
  • The paper discusses how ecological compensation can help align the interests of areas generating waste and those treating it, using dynamic differential games to analyze different compensation strategies.
  • The study finds that government intervention paired with horizontal compensation boosts waste management efficiency and urban welfare by promoting regional collaboration and better resource allocation.
  • It concludes that fully shared ecological compensation is the most effective, although partial compensation mechanisms can also work, achieving long-term cooperation and improved environmental outcomes.

We tested a hypothesis that misinformation exploits outrage to spread online, examining generalizability across multiple platforms, time periods, and classifications of misinformation. Outrage is highly engaging and need not be accurate to achieve its communicative goals, making it an attractive signal to embed in misinformation. In eight studies that used US data from Facebook (1,063,298 links) and Twitter (44,529 tweets, 24,007 users) and two behavioral experiments (1475 participants), we show that (i) misinformation sources evoke more outrage than do trustworthy sources; (ii) outrage facilitates the sharing of misinformation at least as strongly as sharing of trustworthy news; and (iii) users are more willing to share outrage-evoking misinformation without reading it first.
