Communication research on scientific issues has traditionally relied on the deficit model, which posits that increasing scientific knowledge leads to public acceptance. However, this model's effectiveness is questioned due to inconclusive impacts of knowledge on acceptance. To address this, we propose a dual-process framework combining the deficit model (with scientific knowledge as a key predictor) and a normative opinion process model (where perceived majority opinion plays a crucial role) to predict people's risk/benefit perceptions and their support for genetic modification (GM).

With the popularity of smartphones, their impact on the physical and mental health of left-behind adolescents has become the focus of social attention. Some believe that smartphone use will provide emotional compensation for left-behind adolescents, while others believe that the lack of supervision of smartphone use among left-behind adolescents will exacerbate their psychological problems. To explore the mechanisms of the dual effects, we conducted a field survey of 848 left-behind adolescents (male = 446, age between 12 and 19) in Shicheng County in Gannan Region of China.

Pathogen stress heightens sensorimotor dimensions in the human collective semantic space.

Commun Psychol

State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning & IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875, China.

Infectious diseases have been major causes of death throughout human history and are assumed to broadly affect human psychology. However, whether and how conceptual processing, an internal world model central to various cognitive processes, adapts to such salient stress variables remains largely unknown. To address this, we conducted three studies examining the relationship between pathogen severity and semantic space, probed through the main neurocognitive semantic dimensions revealed by large-scale text analyses: one cross-cultural study (across 43 countries) and two historical studies (over the past 100 years).

In traditional Chinese painting, the genre of landscapes is unique and universally valued. For an untrained person to achieve such results is very difficult, requiring mastery of such things as brushwork, composition, and color. In this paper, we propose HA-GAN to transform sketches into Chinese landscape paintings, a new GAN-based framework that builds upon a hybrid attention generator and a discriminator.

Information propagation dynamics on heterogeneous-homogeneous coupling bi-layer networks.

Sci Rep

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Media Convergence and Communication, Communication University of China, Beijing, 100024, China.

The proliferation of multi-platform network information has expanded communication channels for users, enabling the integration and dissemination of information across both Social Networking Services (SNS)-type app and Instant Message (IM)-type app. With the intensification of convergent communication, some users in the two types of apps show active alternation in spreading information to each other's platforms. The study of the evolution trend of information in different platforms is of great practical significance for the mastery of the communication law.

Background: The proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, has added complexity and richness to the virtual environment by increasing the presence of AI-generated content (AIGC). Although social media platforms such as TikTok have begun labeling AIGC to facilitate the ability for users to distinguish it from human-generated content, little research has been performed to examine the effect of these AIGC labels.

Objective: This study investigated the impact of AIGC labels on perceived accuracy, message credibility, and sharing intention for misinformation through a web-based experimental design, aiming to refine the strategic application of AIGC labels.

When exposed to traumatic events through media coverage, how do we emotionally appraise the situation? Although many factors contribute to our reasoning about media vicarious traumatization, in this article we focus on the role of metaphorical frames. This study uses an online survey experiment ( = 280 CHN adults) to investigate how irrational beliefs influence the effects of metaphorical frames on media vicarious traumatization, with a focus on the mediating role of transportation. The findings revealed that journey metaphors increased media vicarious traumatization more than war metaphors in conditions of low irrational beliefs, while no significant difference was observed in conditions of high irrational beliefs.

Preference reversal in intertemporal decision making.

Front Psychol

December 2024

School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China.

This study examines asymmetric preference reversals in intertemporal decision-making by comparing gain and loss contexts across choice and bidding tasks. In the gain context, participants preferred smaller, sooner (SS) rewards in choice tasks but assigned higher valuations to larger, later (LL) rewards in bidding tasks. Conversely, in the loss context, they showed a preference for LL options in choice tasks but provided lower bids for SS options.

Background: While acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is widely recognized as the primary cause of Cardiogenic Shock (CS), Non-AMI related CS has been excluded from the majority of CS studies. Information on its prognostic factors remains largely understudied, and it is necessary to focus on these patients to identify the specific risk factors. In this study, we aimed to build and validate a predictive nomogram and risk classification system.

Guided by literature on framing, this study explored how the presence of age labels in different message frames influenced message-evoked fear and anger responses, particularly for older adults with different levels of need for autonomy (NFA), which ultimately affected their physical activity intentions. The results of a three-factor between-subjects experiment, with message frame (gain versus loss) and age label (present versus absent) as manipulated variables and NFA (low versus medium versus high) as quasi-experiment variable ( = 237) revealed that loss-framed message evoked higher levels of fear and anger as compared to gain-framed message. Furthermore, the anger elicited by loss-framing was more pronounced when age labels were present, especially among older adults with low NFA.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital health technology, but it could also impact age-based disparities as existing studies have pointed out. Compared with the pre-pandemic period, whether the rapid digitalization of the health care system during the pandemic widened the age-based disparities over a long period remains unclear.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the multifaceted landscape of digital health technology used across diverse age groups among US citizens.
