Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) catalyses aldehyde species, including alcohol metabolites, mainly in the liver. We recently observed that ALDH2 is also expressed in skeletal muscle mitochondria; thus, we hypothesize that rs671 polymorphism-promoted functional loss of ALDH2 may induce deleterious effects in human skeletal muscle. We aimed to clarify the association of the rs671 polymorphism with muscle phenotypes and athletic capacity in a large Japanese cohort.

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among mood states, perfectionism, and choking, and to identify a mediating effect of perfectionism on the relationship between mood states and choking experienced by Asian university baseball players in extremely stressful situations during a game. Data collected from a total of 209 male university baseball players were analyzed using SPSS 21 and AMOS 21 statistical software. The mean age of study subjects was 20.

Although ample evidence supports the notion that an acute bout of endurance exercise performed at or greater than 70% of maximum oxygen uptake suppresses appetite partly through changes in appetite-regulating hormones, no study has directly compared the influence between the phases of the menstrual cycle in women. This study compared the effects of an acute bout of exercise on orexigenic hormone (acylated ghrelin) and anorexigenic hormones (peptide YY and cholecystokinin) between the early follicular phase (FP) and the mid luteal phase (LP) of the menstrual cycle in physically active women. Ten healthy women (age, 20.

Purpose: Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by prolonged high-intensity exercise can cause structural and functional damage. Antioxidant polyphenol supplementation, which reduces ROS levels, may improve high-intensity exercise performance. We evaluated the effect of lychee fruit extract, which contains high levels of low-molecular-weight oligomerized polyphenols, on high-intensity exercise performance.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is threatening people's lives and impacting their health. It is still unclear whether people engaged in physical activity are at an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe forms of COVID-19. In order to provide data to help answer this question, we, therefore, investigated the effects of endurance training on the levels of host proteins involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection in mice.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of weight management on menstrual status in female athletes. A total of 225 collegiate athletes and 27 para-athletes who belonged to teams affiliated with the Japanese Paralympic Committee were included in this cross-sectional survey. A self-reported questionnaire (containing information on the demographic characteristics, medical history, lifestyle habits, weight management, menstruation status, physical symptoms related to menstrual cycle, and the influence of physical symptoms experienced during the luteal phase of menstruation during training or competition.

High-intensity muscle contractions (HiMCs) are known to increase c-Myc expression that is known to stimulate ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis in most cells. However, although c-Myc mRNA transcription and c-Myc mRNA translation have been shown to be upregulated following resistance exercise concomitantly with increased ribosome biogenesis, this connection has not been tested directly. We investigated the effect of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated c-Myc overexpression, with or without fasting or percutaneous electrical stimulation-induced HiMC, on ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis in adult mouse skeletal muscles.

A shorter joint moment arm (MA) may help maintain the necessary muscle force when muscle contractions are repeated. This beneficial effect may contribute to reducing the energy cost during running. In this study, we examined the correlation between patellar tendon MA and running performance in endurance runners.

Objectives: Urban-rural comparisons between those who maintain traditional lifestyles such as pastoralist Maasai children, and those who live in cities such as Nairobi, provide implications on how urbanization is associated with children's physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) patterns. This study compares PA and SB volumes and patterns across different segments of the week among children in Maasai village and Nairobi city in Kenya.
Method: A total of 261 children (11.

It has been noted that Japanese children sleep the least in the world, and this has become a major social issue. This study examined the pathways linked to sleep habits (SH) among children and adolescents. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in March 2019 on children and their parents at all 63 public elementary and 29 public junior high schools in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? Is muscle protein synthesis (MPS) additionally activated following exercise when ribosomal capacity is increased after repeated bouts of resistance exercise (RE)? What is the main finding and its importance? Skeletal muscles with increased ribosome content through repeated RE bouts showed sufficient activation of MPS with lower mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 signalling. Thus, repeated bouts of RE possibly change the translational capacity and efficiency to optimize translation activation following RE.
Abstract: Resistance exercise (RE) activates ribosome biogenesis and increases ribosome content in skeletal muscles.

This investigation compared the urine caffeine metabolites produced from different forms of caffeine supplementation given to runners 15 minutes before a series of 5-km running trials. Fourteen amateur competitive runners completed a series of self-paced outdoor time trials following ingestion of placebo or one of three alternate forms of caffeine supplement. Trials were randomized in a crossover design with equivalent doses of caffeine (4.

Sport climbing will become an official event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; it is a popular wilderness sport among athletes and amateurs. Our previous study suggested that the T1470A polymorphism (rs1049434) of the monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) gene is associated with athletic performance and physiological phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of MCT1 T1470A polymorphism in Polish and Japanese climbers using a case-control study.

Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays a central role in muscle protein synthesis and repeated bouts of resistance exercise (RE) blunt mTORC1 activation. However, the changes in the proteolytic signaling when recurrent RE bouts attenuate mTORC1 activation are unclear. Using a RE model of electrically stimulated rat skeletal muscle, this study aimed to clarify the effect of repeated RE bouts on acute proteolytic signaling, particularly the calpain, autophagy-lysosome, and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

Background: Knee extensor muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are major components of physical fitness. Because the interactive association of knee extensor muscle strength and CRF with bone health remains unclear, we aimed to investigate such association in Japanese adults.
Methods: Altogether, 8,829 Japanese adults (3,731 men and 5,098 women) aged ≥45 years completed the maximum voluntary knee extension test, submaximal exercise test, medical examination, and a questionnaire on lifestyle habits.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscular weakness because of the loss of dystrophin. Extracellular Ca2+ flows into the cytoplasm through membrane tears in dystrophin-deficient myofibers, which leads to muscle contracture and necrosis. Sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) takes up cytosolic Ca2+ into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, but its activity is decreased in dystrophic muscle.

Appropriate wheelchairs are often essential for the health and wellbeing of people with mobility impairments to enhance fundamental freedoms and equal opportunity. To date, provision has mainly focused on just delivering the wheelchair instead of following an evidence-based wheelchair service delivery process. In addition, many governments have not committed to a national wheelchair provision policy.
