Prediction of the occurrence of leprosy reactions based on Bayesian networks.

Front Med (Lausanne)

July 2023

School of Medicine and Life Sciences, Graduate Program in Health Sciences, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná - PUCPR, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

Introduction: Leprosy reactions (LR) are severe episodes of intense activation of the host inflammatory response of uncertain etiology, today the leading cause of permanent nerve damage in leprosy patients. Several genetic and non-genetic risk factors for LR have been described; however, there are limited attempts to combine this information to estimate the risk of a leprosy patient developing LR. Here we present an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system that can assess LR risk using clinical, demographic, and genetic data.

The purpose of this article is to report a successful endodontic treatment of a mandibular first molar with six canals; three root canals in the mesial root, two root canals in the distal root, and one radix entomolaris. The incidence of two anatomical variations presented in this report, middle mesial canal and radix entomolaris, is generally low. Knowledge of the internal anatomy of the root canals and their possible variations, and use of magnification, such as the operating microscope or loupes, can increase the chances of finding additional canals, contributing to the success of endodontic treatment.

This study evaluated the efficiency of using a single instrument from three different rotary multi-file systems and compared them with that of a reciprocating single-file for endodontic retreatment by means of micro-CT. Sixty extracted canines were prepared using a size F2 ProTaper Universal file and obturated. After 30 days of storage at 37ºC and 100% humidity, the teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n=15) based on the type of instrument used to retreatment: ProTaper Next (PTN), ProTaper Gold (PTG), TRUShape 3D (TS), and WaveOne (WO).

Effect of half-digital workflows on the adaptation of custom CAD-CAM composite post-and-cores.

J Prosthet Dent

December 2021

Professor, Graduate Program in Dentistry, School of Life Sciences, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR), Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Electronic address:

Statement Of Problem: Even without the use of an intraoral scanner, post-and-cores can be obtained by using a part-digital fabrication workflow that requires pattern modeling (direct, indirect, or impression); however, studies on the adaptation of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) composite resin post-and-cores in comparison with metal cast post-and-cores are sparse.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the adaptation of CAD-CAM composite resin post-and-cores fabricated through a part-digital fabrication workflow and to compare it with that of metal cast post-and-cores fabricated through conventional methods.

Method And Materials: Eight extracted human premolars were endodontically treated and prepared for custom post-and-cores.

Understanding the contextual factors that influence the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based chronic disease prevention (EBCDP) interventions in public health settings across countries could inform strategies to support the dissemination and implementation of EBCDP interventions globally and more effectively prevent chronic diseases. A survey tool to use across diverse countries is lacking. This study describes the development and reliability testing of a survey tool to assess the stage of dissemination, multi-level contextual factors, and individual and agency characteristics that influence the dissemination and implementation of EBCDP interventions in Australia, Brazil, China, and the United States.

Neighborhood environmental attributes have been found to be associated with residents' time spent walking and in physical activity, in studies from single countries and in multiple-country investigations. There are, however, mixed findings on such environmental relationships with sedentary (sitting) time, which primarily have used evidence derived from single-country investigations with self-reported behavioral outcome measures. We examined potential relationships of neighborhood environmental attributes with objectively-assessed sedentary time using data from 5712 adults recruited from higher and lower socio-economic status neighborhoods in 12 sites in 10 countries, between 2002 and 2011.

Olfactory Function in SCA10.

Cerebellum

February 2019

Postgraduate Program in Medicine, Universidade Nove de Julho, Uninove, São Paulo, Brazil.

Although the main clinical manifestations of spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) result from damage of the cerebellum, other systems may also be involved. Olfactory deficits have been reported in other types of ataxias, especially in SCA3; however, there are no studies on olfactory deficits in SCA type 10 (SCA10). To analyze olfactory function of SCA10 patients compared with that of SCA3, Parkinson's, and healthy controls.

Objective: Features of colorectal cancer such as natural history, molecular, chromosomal, and epigenetic alterations have been well described. However, there is still a lack of accurate prognostic markers, which is evident by the lower overall survival rates of patients with advanced cancer. Although alterations in parkin protein expression have been described in colorectal cancer, the functional significance of this protein remains unknown.

Candidemia is the main invasive fungal disease among hospitalized patients. Several breakthrough candidemia (BrC) cases have been reported, but few studies evaluate the epidemiology, risk factors, molecular characterization, antifungal susceptibility profile and outcome of those patients, especially in developing countries and including patients using broad spectrum antifungals. We conducted a retrospective study from 2011 to 2016, including patients aged 12 years or older with candidemia.
