The present study investigated the incremental validity of the ADHD dimensions of inattention (IA), hyperactivity (HY), and impulsivity (IM) in the predictions of emotion symptoms (ESs), conduct problems (CPs), and peer problems (PPs) in adolescents based on parent, teacher, and self- ratings. A total of 214 ratings were collected from adolescents, their parents, and teachers in Australia. A structural equation modeling approach was employed to evaluated incremental validity.

Applied Health, School of Health and Biomedical Science, RMIT University, 264 Plenty Rd, Mill Park, Melbourne, VIC, 3082, Australia.

The Bergen-Yale Sexual Addiction Scale (BYSAS; [1]) is arguably the most popular questionnaire at present for assessing sex addiction. Employing Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and treating item scores as ordered categorical, we applied Weighted Least Square Mean and Variance Adjusted Chi-Square (WLSMV) extraction to investigate the longitudinal measurement and structural invariance of ratings on the BYSAS among 276 adults (mean = 31.86 years; SD = 9.

The study examined the measurement invariance (configural, metric, scalar, and residual) of the Personality Inventory for Brief Form (PID-5-BF; Krueger et al., 2013) across gender for the theorized Five-Factor oblique model. A large group of adults ( = 502), with ages ranging from 18 to 67 years, from the Australian general community completed the PID-5-BF.

Background: Hamstring strain injuries (HSI) are among the most common injuries in field-based team sports with a high-speed running component. The implementation of the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) is a well-documented method of improving eccentric hamstring strength to mitigate the risk of HSI occurrence. Sprint training is specific to the injury mechanism and is thought to activate the hamstrings through maximal eccentric contractions.

Systema Temporis: A time-based dimensional framework for consciousness and cognition.

Conscious Cogn

DVC-Research & Innovation, Federation University Australia, Australia; Biopsychosocial & eHealth Research & Innovation Hub, Federation University Australia, Australia.

This study uses a combined categorical-dimensional approach to depict a hierarchical framework for consciousness similar to, and contiguous with, factorial models of cognition (cf., intelligence). On the basis of the longstanding definition of time consciousness, the analysis employs a dimension of temporal extension, in the same manner that psychology has temporally organised memory (i.

Time dilation and acceleration in depression.

Acta Psychol (Amst)

March 2019

Biopsychosocial & eHealth Research & Innovation Hub & DVC-R Portfolio, Federation University Australia, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study investigates why depressed individuals perceive time inconsistently, experiencing slow passage in the present while simultaneously judging short durations as longer and long durations as shorter.
  • The study reanalyzes four out of six original studies and finds that time perception changes from an initial slow dilation to a quicker acceleration as intervals get longer, particularly influenced by one's mood.
  • The research proposes that these variations in time perception are linked to brain networks related to memory and mood, with implications for understanding how depressive states affect temporal judgement, but it only covers a limited number of studies.

Background: Emergency departments (EDs) are usually the first point of contact, and often the only medical service available, for patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in rural and regional areas. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have been created to ensure best practice management of mTBI in EDs. Adherence to mTBI CPGs has rarely been evaluated in rural and regional areas.

A Lack of Aquatic Rescue Competency: A Drowning Risk Factor for Young Adults Involved in Aquatic Emergencies.

J Community Health

August 2018

Faculty of Health, School of Health Sciences and Psychology, Federation University Australia, Mt Helen, PO Box 663, Ballarat, VIC, 3353, Australia.

Drowning is an important public health issue with major impacts on young adults aged 15-24 years, yet little is known about the causal factors for drowning for this group. As young adults recreate with peers in unpatrolled aquatic environments, the capacity to perform effective and efficient rescues seems pivotal. This study examined perceived ability of young adults to perform a rescue; determined the level of aquatic rescue knowledge; and measured the effect of an aquatic rescue intervention.

School of Health Sciences and Psychology, Federation University Australia, PO Box 3191, Gippsland, VIC, 3841, Australia.

Loneliness and adapting to an unfamiliar environment can increase emotional vulnerability in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) university students. According to Blaszczynski and Nower's pathways model of problem and pathological gambling, this emotional vulnerability could increase the risk of problem gambling. The current study examined whether loneliness was associated with problem gambling risk in CALD students relative to their Australian peers.

Objectives: Depression is a significant mental health issue among older Australian adults. Research has indicated that insomnia is a key risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms in older adults, and that dispositional hope may be protective against the development of depressive symptoms in this population. This study examined whether dispositional hope and its dimensions, agency and pathways, moderated the relationship between insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms among older Australian adults.

Although Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Depression are classified as separate disorders, the high incidence of co-morbidity and the strong correlations between measures of each has led to debate about the nature of their relationship. Some authors have proposed that OCD is in fact a mood disorder while others have suggested that the two disorders are grounded in negative affectivity. A third proposition is that depression is an essential part of OCD but that OCD is a separate disorder from depression.

Online ethics: where will the interface of mental health and the internet lead us?

Int J Bipolar Disord

December 2017

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine, 401 Quarry Road, Stanford, CA, 94305, USA.

While e-health initiatives are poised to revolutionize delivery and access to mental health care, conducting clinical research online involves specific contextual and ethical considerations. Face-to-face psychosocial interventions can at times entail risk and have adverse psychoactive effects, something true for online mental health programs too. Risks associated with and specific to internet psychosocial interventions include potential breaches of confidentiality related to online communications (such as unencrypted email), data privacy and security, risks of self-selection and self-diagnosis as well as the shortcomings of receiving psychoeducation and treatment at distance from an impersonal website.
